Official Chairshot Staff Picks: 2018 WWE Royal Rumble
So Royal Rumble is a few days away, and that means that everyone is running around with speculation and predictions for the outcome of this Pay-per-view. Given these facts…you didn’t think we wouldn’t be partaking in the festivities of unabashedly throwing our opinions around like a sweeping declaration on How I Met Your Mother, did you? We corralled 12 of our personalities to partake in predictions, and we will be keeping a running tally all year, to see who is the most accurate in all of The Chairshot The choice that wins the majority vote, will officially be The Chairshot’s pick to win the match, regardless of how I feel about the choice.
Who voted? Harry Broadhurst (Raw Reaction), Tony Acero (Raw Reaction), Dan Phelan (The Architect of The Chairshot), PC Tunney (The Commissioner), Christopher Platt (Mr. Velvet Pipes), Greg DeMarco (The Kingpin), Patrick O’Dowd (The Realist), Big Dave (The Law), Marilee Gallagher (The Nice One), Steven Mitchell (Got Ya Covered), Jon Weigell (The Professional) and myself of course (they seem to like calling me El Snowflake), for putting together these picks. Next predictions article I will layout everyone’s record so we can see who’s pulling up the rear, to start off the year.
Now let’s get to the run down in case you’ve been trapped under ice for the last few weeks and have no clue what’s supposed to go down on this show:
Smackdown Live Tag Team Title Match: The Usos (c) vs Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin
Coming off of a controversial Dusty Finish a few weeks ago, Gable and Benjamin feel like they were robbed of the titles. While The Usos defined the tag team division last year and have maintained their momentum as they look like the most complete team in WWE. Will a legal indiscretion seal their fate or will they live to fight another day, in the Uso Penitentiary?
Voting Breakdown:
The Usos – 9
Gable & Benjamin – 3
Official Chairshot Pick: The Usos retain

Raw Tag Team Title Match: Seth Rollins & Jason Jordan (c) vs Sheamus & Cesaro
In amusing symmetry the two former members of American Alpha are both in a Tag Title match, just not together, and not for the same one. Sheamus and Cesaro feel like Kurt Angle threw together Jordan and Rollins as an act of nepotism. However, if the last couple weeks leading up to this, The Diet Shield has been involved more with The Balor Club, while Sheamus and Cesaro have been losing to Titus Worldwide. Is this just an obligatory match to get us to Elimination Chamber when The Club take the titles off Rollins and Jordan; or will Sheamus and Cesaro pull off what would be considered an upset with the past few weeks bookings?
Voting Breakdown:
Rollins & Jordan – 4
Sheamus & Cesaro – 8
Official Chairshot Pick: The Bar wins

WWE Heavyweight Championship 2v1 Handicap Match: AJ Styles (c) vs Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn
Well this match has so many odd questions. Is Daniel Bryan colluding with Kevin and Sami? Will WWE do Co-Champions again when the last one wasn’t exactly well received? Will Kevin and Sami explode mid match when egos get in the way? All I know is that Styles stuck his foot in his mouth by suggesting this, and now we get to see if he can pull it off.
Voting Breakdown:
AJ Styles – 10
Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn – 2
Official Chairshot Pick: AJ Styles retains

WWE Universal Championship Triple Threat Match: Brock Lesnar (c) vs Braun Strowman vs Kane
Now even if everyone doesn’t agree on the winner, I haven’t met a person that thinks Kane is involved for any reason than to eat the pin. Braun is the guy everyone wants to see finally get over on Lesnar, but between standing tall the last 3 weeks and everyone’s inevitable Lesnar vs Reigns prediction, no one is fully sold. Lesnar will probably continue to do his shtick, but hell, here’s to hoping it’s at least a fun match.
Voting Breakdown:
Lesnar – 10
Braun – 2
Kane – 0
Official Chairshot Pick: Brock Lesnar retains

Women’s Royal Rumble: 30 Woman Over the Top Rope
What can really be said about this beyond the fact it seems like it’s all about Asuka. This will either be her mowing through the division and standing tall, until Rousey debuts (assuming she doesn’t debut in the Rumble); or there will probably be a gimmicked reason why she fails, thus, reducing her overall threat a little bit. Is Asuka Wonder Woman, or is she mortal after all?
Voting Breakdown:
Asuka – 9
Becky Lynch – 1
Nia Jax – 1
Ronda Rousey – 1
Official Chairshot Pick: Asuka wins

Men’s Royal Rumble: 30 Man Over the Top Rope
Surprisingly, this one hasn’t been a narrative built around mainly one person. Las Vegas has a Nakamura as the favorite, however, coming off dropping the Intercontinental Title to The Miz, Roman Reigns is now more plausible to win the rumble. If Roman wins another Rumble in Philly, there may be riots in the streets. But either way, the ending will at least be surprising.
Voting Breakdown:
Nakamura – 6
Reigns – 4
Ziggler – 1
Balor – 1
Official Chairshot Pick: Shinsuke Nakamura wins

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.
While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.
‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?
I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.
Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.
The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.
All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.
As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
