We’ve now been entrenched in the “Roman Reigns Era” for just over 3 years now as the WWE pegged ‘The Big Dog’ to be the next ‘Guy’ heading into WrestleMania 31 in 2015. Roman has become the face of WWE, main eventing four straight WrestleManias now, all while continuously receiving boos and harsh criticisms from numbers of fans. Of course, this is not to say Reigns doesn’t have his supporters as well, which is clear when you see who the company’s top earners are and our weekly YouTube reports (you can check out this week’s RAW YouTube Report here).

This year, there’s been seemingly more discussion among members of the WWE Universe regarding Roman’s status on top. The three-time WWE Champion has lost a number of matches since the beginning of the year and despite most fans seeing it as an inevitability that he will defeat Universal Champion Brock Lesnar for the title, he lost at WrestleMania 34 and then again at Greatest Royal Rumble to ‘The Beast Incarnate’.

According to Brad Shepard of BodySlam.net on his latest Backstage In WWE Podcast, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon doesn’t have any plans to move away from Roman anytime soon. While some have thought Braun Strowman has gained a lot of momentum and has a chance at Reigns’ spot, the company will continue working to get Roman over as the top guy.

EA’s Take: I definitely believe that McMahon hasn’t given up on ‘The Big Dog’. I also think it’s important to note that when they say “working to get Roman over as the top guy”, I don’t think they’re saying “over” like we are thinking about. Reigns moves lots of merchandise and is consistently one of, if not the top viewed video on YouTube almost weekly. So he’s definitely “over” in the sense we know of, but not with everybody and he’s certainly not what I’d call transcendent like a Cena or Rock, which is what I think they mean there. I’ve always said that having a guy like Roman on top is not a new formula for the company, it’s always been that way with the one exception being a total aberration in history, the Attitude Era. It was Bruno, Hulk, then Warrior, Bret and Shawn all got brief shots at it, followed by Cena after the Attitude Era. This is nothing new people! Unfortunately, a lot of us now grew up on Austin, DX and the like during a hot time and honestly, got spoiled because of it.
