Match #5 for the NWA United States Tag Team Championship: NWA United States Tag Team Champions ‘Flyin’ Brian Pillman & ‘Z-Man’ Tom Zenk vs. The Midnight Express (‘Beautiful’ Bobby Eaton & ‘Sweet’ Stan Lane) w/Jim Cornette
Special stipulation is that Jim Cornette must be locked in a cage at ringside. All 4 men brawl in the ring and Pillman and Zenk dump them outside. Cornette is not in his cage yet tries to get involved but he is clotheslined by referee Randy Anderson. Pillman and Zenk carry him to the cage and he is locked. Eaton and Pillman start the legal action. They tie up and it’s broken on the ropes. Eaton consults with Lane before locking up again. A right hand by Eaton but Pillman fights back with chops. Football tackle by Pillman. Dropkick by Pillman. Lane rushes the ring but is met with a hip toss.

Z-Man and Pillman take care of both with some monkey flips, and a flying clothesline. Eaton paces outside to regroup and Lane is back on the apron. It’s Zenk and Lane. Collar and elbow with a side headlock by Zenk. Lane gives a kick to the mid section, but on the next ride Zenk lands 3 arm drags. Eaton rushes to help. He holds Z-Man but Zenk is able to move and Lane drop kicks his partner. Zenk sends Lane for the ride and lands another drop kick. Lane and Eaton keep checking in with the caged Cornette. Pillman is back in and he ties up with Lane.

Lane delivers rights and sends Pillman but Brian returns with a sunset flip. Arm drag take down by Pillman but Lane breaks it up with a poke to the eye. A tag is made to Eaton but Bobby is immediately captured in an arm bar. Eaton fights out and delivers some straight rights. Football tackle and an unsuccessful sunset flip by Eaton. Eaton tries a monkey flip but Pillman lands on his feet and catches his opponent in the face with a drop kick. Collar and elbow tie up and a tag is made to Lane. Pillman maintains control and quickly tags in Zenk. Wristlock by Zenk but Lane but it’s quickly broken.

Snapmare by Lane who then misses with an elbow. Arm drag into an armbar by Zenk. Atomic drop by Zenk and Lane runs into his charging partner. Lane regroups and is back in the ring. Kick to the mid section and then to the back. Lane misses an ax handle and Zenk grabs a wrist. This doesn’t last as Eaton is tagged back in, but Zenk is still in control of the arm. Eaton pulls the hair and reverses the arm bar submission with Zenk on the mat. The two exchange reversals on the mat with Eaton using the hair to his advantage. Back to their feet, a tag is made to Pillman. Eaton dumps Pillman out.

He tries to ram Pillman’s head into the turnbuckle from the apron but Pillman blocks it. Up to the top rope and a sunset flip gives Flyin Brian a 2 count. Wristlock by Brian who tags in Z Man and they execute a double back body drop. Z Man is whipped into the Express’ corner. Eaton chases him but he is back body dropped to the outside. Zenk uses the ropes to pull Lane into the ring. Pillman rushes in and lands a drop kick. Double hip toss by Pillman and Z-Man on Lane who rolls out of the ring to regroup. Lane and Zenk lock up. Drop toe hold by Lane but Zenk reverses it into a hammerlock. Lane fights out and a tag is made to Eaton.

He’s greeted with a scoop slam. Zenk holds the wrist and Pillman is in with an arm bar. Eaton pulls Pillman down by the hair. Monkey flip by Pillman who follows with a cross body but Eaton ducks. Outside of the ring, Eaton takes advantage with a neck breaker. Lane is in the ring and he defend Pillman’s entrance with a knee to the throat. Pillman gasps for air and rolls in the ring. Lane snaps Pillman’s neck on the top rope and rushes him with a clothesline. Tag is made to Eaton. Snap mare take down by Lane before he exits and Eaton comes in with an elbow.

Eaton with a slingshot back breaker and Lane is back in. The ref is distracted and Eaton takes a cheap shot before Lane chokes Pillman on the ropes. Eaton takes more liberties from the apron. Tag is made to Eaton. Lane with a drop toe hold and Eaton with an elbow to the back of the head. Eaton goes for a cover but Zenk breaks it up. Pillman fights with some mid section rights but Lane is tagged back in and Pillman is kicked down. Pillman is once again thrown to the outside. Lane gives chase and throws Pillman into the steel rail.

Lane pulls him back in, he sends him for the ride. Pillman leaps over the back body drop for a sunset flip but the ref isn’t there for a quick count. Eaton is tagged back in. Pillman is slammed to the mat and Eaton lands a flying elbow drop. Eaton attempts a few pins but can only get 2 as Pillman shows his strength. Back to their feet, Lane is tagged back in. Pillman surprises him with an inside cradle for a near fall. More quick tags by the Express. Scoop slam by Lane and a tag is made to Eaton. Lateral press gets Eaton 2.

Eaton heads for the top and he lands a flying leg drop. He’s slow to make the cover and Pillman kicks out. Pillman is sent for the ride. He reverses a side slam attempt with one of his own. Zenk and Lane are tagged at the same time and Z-Man cleans house. He grabs Lane in a sleeper but Eaton breaks it up. Side Russian legsweep by Lane who tags in Eaton. Eaton to the top rope. Lane throws Eaton for the Rocket Launcher and Zenk kicks out at two. Irish whip by Eaton but Zenk moves.

Right from Zenk. Eaton reverses an Irish whip but Zenk comes back with a high cross body off the 2nd turnbuckle. Lane breaks up the pin and Pillman attacks him. The ref lectures Pillman as Lane gets up for a savate kick to the back of Zenk’s head. Eaton falls on top for the pin and we have new champions!
Winners and NEW NWA United States Champions: The Midnight Express (Eaton/Savate Kick)

  • EA’s Take: Cornette in a cage is a call back to a stipulation from Starrcade few years ago, but it was hilarious when he got clotheslined! The Midnight Express are one of the most in-sync tag teams I’ve ever seen and Brian Pillman uses an awful lot of sunset flips. Those are my takeaways. The title change here makes the outcome at WrestleWar more sensical, as it didn’t seem like Pillman & Zenk were destined for a long run together.

In The ArenaSting makes his way to the ring in street clothes followed by RobocopThe Horsemen rush in and lock Sting in the cage Jim Cornette was in. Robocop pulls the door off the cage to free Sting. The Horsemen back off.

Backstage: The Junkyard Dog is standing by with Tony Schiavone, Jim Cornette interupts him, upset that the time isn’t being used on the team who just won tag team belts. Cornette asks where he’s been while The Midnight Express were busy winning matches. JYD gives him an address and Cornette yells that’s his mother’s house! Cornette tries to blind side him with his tennis racket, to no avail. JYD is back.

Match #6 is a Corporal Punishment Match: The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael ‘P.S.’ Hayes ‘Gorgeous’ Jimmy Garvin) vs. The Rock ‘N’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson)
Hayes and Gibson start us out. Hayes is dancing and taunting. Hayes is very bothered by the fans and he heads to floor. He is back to the ring and he ties up with Dibson. Hayes with vicious rights in the corner until Gibson receives a slap to the face. Collar and elbow tie up and Gibson backs Hayes off with a right. A tag is made to Garvin who wants Morton and the Express oblige. Morton taunts the Freebird strut. Morton reverses an Irish whip and Gibson clotheslines Garvin in the corner. They try it again but Garvin moves.

Clothesline and a drop kick by Morton. They regroup and tie up. Morton is sent for the ride and is victim of a back body drop. Garvin attempts a clothesline with the strap but Morton moves and grabs the strap. Both free birds take whips to their back and they escape to the floor. The straps are put back. Collar and elbow tie up before a quick tag to Gibson who puts Garvin in a full nelson. Side headlock by Gibson. They run the ropes and a sunset flip from Gibson gets 1. Tag is made to Morton and he ties up with Garvin. Side headlock by Morton and he hangs on through an attempted atomic drop. Gibson comes in with no tag as the referee is distracted with Hayes.

He questions it and the RnR tell him to ask the crowd. The ref is with Hayes once again as Morton and Gibson swap spots with the reverse chin lock and the referee is suspicious. Garvin is to his feet fighting back. Irish whip but Morton moves. Single leg pick up by Morton and he puts on a figure four. Hayes rushes the ring but Gibson cuts HIM off with a figure four. The holds are broken and Garvin and Hayes double team Gibson who is now the legal man. There’s an elbow and a strut from Michael Hayes. He now has the strap and Gibson takes some shots to the back.

He counters with a right and gets a whip from Morton. There is a stand off between Hayes and Gibson. Hayes misses a whip shot and Gibson goes to work whipping both Freebirds. The RnR clear the ring. The straps are put back in the corners and Hayes and Gibson circle. They exchange rights before Gibson is whipped into the Freebird corner. A tag is made to Garvin. He takes down Gibson and delivers a knee to the back of the head. He gets a 2 count before lifting Gibson for a scoop slam. Garvin stays on the offense and he rubs Gibson’s face into the mat. Gibson is dumped to the outside and Michael Hayes takes some cheap shots.

Back in the ring, Gibson catches Garvin with a kick to the face on an attempted back body drop. Morton is tagged back in. Morton gets a roll up attempt and Garvin kicks out. Morton is flung to the Freebird corner where Hayes takes a cheap left hand shot. Garvin attempts a pin but the referee is late. Reverse chin lock by Garvin who sits on his back for leverage. The crowd chants Rock ‘n’ Roll as Morton crawls toward his corner. Garvin gives Gibson a right and the Freebirds double team Morton. Hayes is in and he continues the reverse chin lock. Hayes delivers rights in the corner.

Morton reverses an Irish whip and gets 6 straight rights in the corner. He whips Hayes to the opposite corner but Hayes catches him with a right hand. 3 elbow and knee drops from Hayes before returning to the chinlock. A running bulldog from Hayes gives the Freebirds 2 and a half. Garvin is tagged in and he stomps away at the head. Snapmare into another reverse chin lock by Garvin. Ricky Morton fights back, but the ring is cut in half. Morton is tossed outside and Hayes whips and chokes him while the referee isn’t looking. Morton is pulled back to the apron and into the ring.

He gets a knee to the midsection as well as a scoop slam. Garvin keeps the pressure on with a knee to the head. Another scoops slam by Garvin and he heads for the top rope. Morton cuts him off and delivers a gorilla press slam from the top. Hayes is tagged in but his face is jammed into the turnbuckle by Morton. He stops the momentum with an elbow to the face. Hayes attempts his running bulldog on Morton but Ricky throws him. A tag is made to Gibson and he elevates Hayes for a back body drop. All 4 men brawl in the ring.

Morton is thrown to the outside and they double team Gibson. Hayes hits Gibson with his DDT and he struts around the ring. He sets up for another DDT but Morton rushes up to the top rope and instead executes a sunset flip for the win.
Winners: The Rock ‘N’ Roll Express (Morton/Sunset Flip)

  • EA’s Take: I’d have to go back and look to see whether or not these were actually the legal men, but whatever works! For a Corporal Punishment stipulation match (basically a strap match), I was surprised the straps weren’t used more than they were, but how creative can you get with that really? More classic WCW rivalries here and just classic, fgoold old fashioned wrastlin’.

Chris King Looks Back at WWE Clash In The Castle 2022

With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!

Roman Reigns WWE Clash At The Castle 2022

With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!

We are a few weeks away from WWE Clash In Italy PLE, which airs on May 31st. Chris King has gone back to look at the 2022 Clash At The Castle PLE and the matches with the most important future implications.

Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky

All six superstars started the match in front of this wild UK crowd. The babyfaces took advantage early with a triple suplex, and Bianca Bel-Air hit her patented springboard moonsault and covered Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai for a near fall. Alexa Bliss and Sky got the match going with some fast-paced offense. Bliss hit their Glitz Flip, and Sky tagged in the leader of Damage Control. Despite the crowd chanting for Bayley, “I wanna know, will you be my girl?” the methodical heel would purposely tag out for most of this match.

Bliss hit a beautiful sunset flip powerbomb and covered Sky, but Kai was the legal participant, so she ate a huge kick. Asuka and Sky now went toe-to-toe with some incredibly fast-paced action (I can’t wait to watch their match at Backlash); these two have insane chemistry. The crowd wanted the Raw Women’s Champion and Bayley tagged in. The EST is showcasing her raw power over all of Damage Control. The babyfaces looked to rally after a superplex off of Belair’s back. The heels took advantage of the numbers game; Kai hit her signature Kaio Kick, Bayley delivered Rose Plant, and Sky hit her picture-perfect moonsault. Bayley got the huge victory for Damage Control!

  • This was a breakout performance for the new dangerous trio “Damage Control.” Bayley was such a genius changing the theme music so the crowd couldn’t sing it. That’s Heel 101. Bayley tagging out and not giving the UK crowd what they wanted was brilliant.
  • Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky would run roughshod on SmackDown for the entire year with some amazing performances, including headlining WarGames. The Damage Control storyline would continue through the next two years, and Bayley would ultimately win the Women’s

Championship from Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40.

Gunther VS. Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)

Ludwig Kaiser introduced Giovanni Vinci, bringing back together Imperium as ‘The Ring General’ made his way down to the ring. The bell rang, and the punishment began as Sheamus’s chest was already red. Gunter chopped ‘The Celtic Warrior’ right off the turnbuckle to the outside. The challenger was writhing in pain as Gunther locked in a Boston Crab.

Sheamus was fighting for his life to become a grand-slam champion here, taking all of the champions’ brutality. Gunther delivered a nasty bodyslam to Sheamus on the outside. The Celtic Warrior was finally able to deliver The 10 Beats of the Bodhran for a count of twelve.

Midway through the match, both the champion and the challenger got into a slugfest, and Sheamus hit a loud knee strike for a two-count! Sheamus delivered White Noise for another near-fall. The entire UK crowd was on their feet as the Brogue Kick was countered;

Gunther hit his patented dropkick into the corner. Sheamus lifted Gunther up for the Celtic Cross from the turnbuckle for a count of 2.99! The Celtic Warrior tried to go for the brogue kick, but his back gave out. The Intercontinental Champion delivered a powerbomb followed by a colossal lariat to retain his prestigious title.

Sheamus got a standing ovation from the raucous UK crowd despite his loss. He may not have won the intercontinental title, but he won their respect!

  • Both Brutes stood in the middle of the ring, staring at each other without throwing a punch as their faction members fought to solidify a singles match with no interference. That was so brilliant and creative to see. As soon as the match got underway, both superstars beat the holy hell of each other for 20+ minutes.
  • ‘The Ring General’ would have the longest reign of 666 days in WWE history as Intercontinental Champion, defeating the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable. He would eventually lose to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, but Gunther has the bar so high with such an amazing reign.

Edge & Rey Mysterio VS. The Judgement Day

Finn Balor and Rey Mysterio started the tag team match with some hard chops in the corner. Mysterio bounced back with some head-scissors takedown, and Damien Priest tagged in and clocked Edge with a nasty right hand. ‘The Rated-R Superstar was all fired up with some quick offense, sending Mysterio onto both JD members on the outside.

Priest and Balor utilized the numbers game to take out their opponents with a leg drop and some double-team maneuvers. Mysterio had taken a lot of punishment and wanted to make the tag to Edge, but Priest prevented the tag with a big boot.

The former leader of the JD came in firing on all cylinders, hitting some clotheslines and nailing Balor with an Edgecution. The UK crowd was going wild for Edge as he delivered his tag-partner’s signature 619, followed by a splash from Mysterio for a near-fall.

Edge intercepted a chokeslam attempt on Mysterio with a spear to the outside! Dominik interfered to help his dad hit a sunset flip powerbomb, and Rhea Ripley made him pay. Mysterio and Edge ensured the victory with a 619 and a picture-perfect Spear!

Following the match, Dominik would low-blow Edge and take his father’s head off with a wicked clothesline. This was the last time he was side-by-side with his father for the foreseeable future in WWE.

  • Edge was trying to get comeuppance on the faction he helped create and was kicked out of. The Judgment Day had been targeting and terrorizing Rey’s son Dominik for months now, who was at ringside. ‘The Rated-R Superstar would ultimately get his revenge on JD at WrestleMania 39, when he faced “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell.
  • This was the birth of Dirty Dom, after being jealous of his dad choosing Edge as his tag partner instead of him. After the match, Dominik gave Edge a low blow and clotheslined his dad’s head off to a loud cheer from

the crowd. His heel turn has been the greatest creative decision in his young career.

  • Dirty Dom is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time NXT North American Champion, and current AAA Mega Champion during his time in The Judgment Day, and he’s one step away from becoming world heavyweight champion.

Roman Reigns VS. Drew McIntrye (WWE Undisputed Universal Championship)

The always overconfident and arrogant undisputed champion and his challenger locked up with the power of one-upmanship. Reigns had been trash-talking his opponent, and McIntyre made his rival back away. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion looks shook because of this insane UK crowd.

The champion answered back with some heavy right hands to his challenger. Reigns looks scared as McIntrye has his way with the champion. Karrion Kross and Scarlet provided a distraction, which allowed Reigns to take advantage. The confident champion now is slowing down the match with explosive, powerful offense like we’ve seen throughout his title reign thus far.

Reigns delivered a big boot, and his challenger kicked out at one! The champion mocked and trash-talked McIntrye and delivered some nasty punches. Both superstars tried to deliver suplexes to each other but to no avail. Reigns then grabbed the mic for Cardiff to acknowledge their Tribal Chief, and The Scottish Warrior hit a Glasgow Kiss to the champion. McIntyre fired up and delivered his patented belly-to-belly throws. The challenger wanted a Claymore Kick as Reigns left the ring. A spinebuster into a jackknife pinfall gave McIntrye a near-fall.

The champion intercepted a Claymore Kick with a devastating Superman Punch for a two-count. The champion locked in the guillotine choke hold in an attempt to get McIntrye to submit. The challenger speared the champion through the barricade. Reigns again intercepted a Claymore Kick with another spear for a 2.99!

McIntyre clocked Reigns with a Claymore Kick to the back of the head and into the referee, Charles Robinson. Austin Theory then made an attempt to cash in his MITB, but Tyson Fury knocked his lights out from the crowd. Back in the ring, the champion has a chair and ate a Claymore Kick for yet another near-fall!

A slugfest ensued between both superstars, followed by a blitz of offense, a headbutt, a spear by the challenger, and a Claymore Kick. McIntyre was one second away from being WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out before the three-count. Reigns capitalized and delivered a massive spear for the victory!

  • ‘The Scottish Warrior’ Drew McIntrye made an amazing entrance, which was highlighted by a storybook video package with his Broken Dreams theme song! The raucous crowd was red-hot for the biggest match of McIntyre’s career since his breakout year in 2020, which was thwarted by Covid. The UK crowd was chanting, “Oh, Drew McIntyre,” before the champion made his entrance.
  • Roman Reigns always looks like a million bucks during his elaborate entrance; this time he was all alone. ‘The Tribal Chief’ had his most difficult title defense to date. Drew McIntyre has always been a thorn in Reigns’ side, ever since returning to WWE in 2018. Reigns went on to have a history-making 1,316-day title reign until Cody Rhodes defeated him at WrestleMania 40. The Tribal Chief won this year’s Royal Rumble and won the World Championship from CM Punk in a five-star classic.
  • Solo Sikoa made his shocking debut when McIntrye delivered a Claymore Kick and pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. The Scottish Warrior has not had the same amount of momentum since the PLE. Yes, he won the world title for about four minutes and was the WWE Undisputed Champion for a month this year, but still, he hasn’t felt like a dangerous threat. Since Sikoa’s debut on the main roster, he’s been the silent enforcer for The Bloodline, the Tribal Chief, and now the leader of the MFTs. He has portrayed a menacing and funny heel at times, and I could see him becoming WWE or World Heavyweight Champion by next year.

Chris King Looks Back: Edge vs Randy Orton in the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”

Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!

Edge Randy Orton WWE Backlash 2020 Greatest Wrestling Match Ever

Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!

Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.

‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.

The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.

Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.

In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.

The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.

The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!

Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!
