Match #5 for the NWA United States Tag Team Championships: NWA United States Tag Team Champions ‘Flyin’ Brian Pillman & ‘Z-Man’ Tom Zenk vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (Jimmy Garvin & Michael ‘P.S.’ Hayes)
Some girls join the Freebirds in the ring. As the Freebirds pose for the crowd, the champs direct the girls out of the ring and stand in their place to surprise the challengers. The champs go to work and Garvin is dropkicked out of the ring. The champs put on the Freebird’s covers and strut around the ring to mock them. They lead a “Freebirds Suck” chant. Hayes and Pillman start the action. Hayes struts and moonwalks around the ring, before taking offense to the crowd’s chant. Collar and elbow tie up and a quick break. Hayes poses for the crowd. Another tie up and Hayes pushes Pillman back to the corner. Hayes misses a right and Pillman is on the offense.
He hits a big clothesline and Hayes retreats. A tag is made to Garvin and Pillman tags his partner as well. Collar and elbow tie up and Garvin takes him down temporarily on a waist lock. Back up to their feet, they run the ropes and Zenk delivers a football tackle. They tie up and Zenk grabs a side headlock. They run and Zenk reverses a hiptoss with one of his own and lands a drop kick. Garvin moves away from the 2nd drop kick and is sent for the ride. Zenk instead kicks Garvin in the face and Pillman is tagged back in. Pillman holds onto a side headlock, before running with a football tackle.
Pillman jumps onto Garvin with a flying crucifix but can only get a 2 count. Hayes is tagged back in to face Pillman. Hayes delivers straight rights. Pillman blocks a move to the corner and slams Hayes into the corner. Hayes is resilient and fights back. The two exchange more blows. Brian goes to the top and lands a cross body press for a two count. Hayes misses a clothesline and Pillman executes a sunset flip for a 2 count. Brian stays on the offense with an arm bar. Tag is made to Zenk and he stays on with a wristlock. Zenk works him all the way down to the mat holding onto the arm. Back to their feet, they run the ropes and Hayes lands a clothesline allowing a tag to Garvin. Jimmy can’t do much better as he’s work to the mat with a wristlock as well.
Garvin works his legs over and grabs Zenk’s head with a scissor. Zenk gets up and manages a tag to Pillman who goes back to work on the wrist. Pillman leaps over Garvin after an Irish whip and hits him with a flying knee. Side headlock takedown by Pillman gets him two. Garvin grabs a side headlock and tags Hayes back in. Hayes whips Pillman and grabs a sleeper hold. Nick Patrick checks the arms but only gets two. Back to their feet, Pillman tries to fight him off but Hayes lands a big left. Hayes goes to the top rope for a cross body, but Pillman rolls him over for a reverse on the cradle. Another tag is made to Garvin and they deliver a double elbow.
Hotshot from Garvin on Pillman. Pillman is sent for the ride and receives a knee to the midsection. Hayes is tagged back in. He rolls Pillman over with a snapmare but misses with his right hand. Pillman sends Hayes for the ride but receives a right to the back of the shoulder blades. Garvin is back in with a shoulder tackle but Garvin is stunned as well. Hot tag is made to Zenk who immediately lands a drop kick and a power slam. Garvin stops the momentum with a kick to the head and a tag to Hayes. Zenk reverses an Irish whip and goes to work with straight rights. He follows it up with a Z-Lock but Garvin breaks it up with an axe handle off the top rope.
Hayes pins Zenk for 2. Zenk is dumped to the outside and abused by Garvin. Hayes follows Zenk out and beats him down on the floor. Zenk goes shoulder first into the ring post before getting rolled back into the ring. Garvin is tagged back in and he executes a snap mare into a chin lock. The crowd chants for Zenk as he works his way back up to little avail. Garvin moves the hold into a camel clutch. An impatient Pillman rushes and kicks Garvin to break it up. As the referee is focused on Pillman a tag is made to Hayes who grabs a reverse chin lock. The referee is unsure about the tag and argues with Garvin. Zenk tries to get to the ropes as Hayes holds him back and uses verbal intimidation.
Back to their feet, Z Man lands some elbows to the mid section then sends Hayes for the ride and a scoop slam. It’s not enough as Hayes moves on the standing elbow attempt and he rolls Zenk into a small package but can only get two. Garvin is tagged back in, and he sends Zenk to the ropes and hits a boot to the midsection. Scoop slam by Garvin who only gets 2 on a lateral press. Hayes is tagged back in and he grabs hold of a reverse chin lock. Z Man gets back to a vertical base and fights Hayes off in the corner. He sends Hayes for an Irish whip but Hayes catches him. Hayes head for the top rope but Zenk pulls him down. Hayes reverses with a snapmare and gets a two count. Hayes can’t hold him down.
He delivers straight kicks to the head and teases Zenk away from him partner. He comes off to deliver a blow to Pillman. While the referee is distracted with the incensed Pillman, the Freebirds double team Zenk on the other side. Hayes covers Zenk for 2 and a half as Hayes protests. Hayes nails Zenk with his trademarked bulldog but Pillman interrupts with a kick to the head. Hayes grabs hold of another reverse chin lock. Hayes sends Zenk for the ride but it is countered with a DDT. Both men make the tag at the same time and Pillman cleans house with 4 drop kicks.
The Freebirds try to whip but he ducks the double clothesline in favor of a shoulder tackle. Hayes is dumped to the floor. Pillman is held and thrown into the cameraman. Unfazed, he goes to the top rope and prevents Garvin from moving in on Zenk by landing a flying body press and gets the 3 count.
Winners and STILL NWA United States Tag Team Champions: ‘Flyin’ Brian Pillman & ‘Z-Man’ Tom Zenk (Pillman/Top Rope Crossbody)
- EA’s Take: A well executed tag team affair here as The Freebirds continue showing what made them work and that’s pure charisma. Pillman and Zenk were a fun little team, but it felt more like Z-Man needed to be in a duo much more than ‘Flyin’ Brian. I thought the thing to do here was have The Birds take the straps since they’re certainly the more established team and as we know now, there were no long-term plans for Pillman & Zenk.
Match #6 for the NWA World Tag Team Championships: NWA World Tag Team Champions The Steiner Brothers (Rick & Scott) vs. The Andersons (Arn & Ole)
Scott and Arn get the action started. Arn takes a cheap shot at Rick. He runs the ropes but Rick pulls him out and pounds on him. Sent back to the ring and Scott strengths him to the corner for rights as Rick takes care of Ole who was attempting to interfere. The Steiners clear the ring and the crowd barks. The Andersons slow things down. Arn tries to lure Scott to his corner. Snapmare by Arn but Scott blocks the knee drop. He comes back with an atomic drop.
Ole rushes the ring but he is bullied as well. Ole is tagged in legally, and he’s taken down with a single leg take down. Rick is tagged in and Ole backs off. Collar and elbow tie up and Rick fights out of the opponents corner with rights. Scott rushes in to help his brother and the Steiners clear the ring once again. Ole and Rick are back in the ring and they lock up. Arm bar by Ole, but it’s reversed by Rick. Arn is tagged in and Rick backs off. Collar and elbow into a side headlock by Rick and he holds on. They run the ropes and Rick power slams Arn. He gets 2 on a lateral press. Ole is backed off from interfering. Arn and Rick tie up and Arn takes him over with a snap mare.
He goes to the top rope but Rick catches him before he gets all the way up. Arn feigns like he’s going to the back, but marches back to the ring. Tags are made to both partners and Ole cranks a side headlock. Ole works on Scott’s left arm. Scott fights back but a tag is made back to Arn. They run, and Scott lands an inverted atomic drop and Scott locks in a figure four. Arn rushes the ring but Rick stops him. Scott’s eyes are raked and the hold is broken. Ole holds the leg, but Scott takes him down with a suplex. He drops the knee to the chest Rick is tagged back. they lock up and Arn is immediately tagged back in.
The Andersons double team him into the turnbuckle. Back to the center of the ring and Rick reverses a vertical suplex. Ole is tagged back in and he goes to work on Rick. Quick tag back to Double A and he’s double teamed once again. The referee keeps Scott from interfering as the Andersons take liberties. Body slam and elbow drop by Ole and he gets 2 and a half. The two exchange blows from their knees. Ole tries to hold Rick’s leg from the tag but can’t do it. Arn and Scott are tagged back into the match and Scott takes Arn down with a headlock. Back to their feet and Scott gets the advantage.
He elbows Arn to the outside. He tries to clothesline Scott, but misses and hits the post. Arn takes advantage of this and goes to work on the left arm. Scott is driven face first into the railing. Ole rolls him back into the ring and holds him in a wide based arm bar. A tag is made back to Arn. Hammerlock slam by Arn and he stays on the left arm of Scott Steiner. Snapmare by Anderson. He goes up to the 2nd rope but Scott gets his legs up. They go to the ropes and Scott catches him in a Frankensteiner.
Both men make the delayed tag and Rick goes to work with some rights. He sends Ole for a Steinerline and gives one to Arn for good measure. The Andersons attempt to send Rick for a double clothesline. He kicks Arn and rolls Ole with an inside cradle for the win.
Winners and STILL NWA World Tag Team Champions: The Steiner Brothers (Rick/Inside Cradle)
- EA’s Take: Ol’ Ole has returned and The Andersons are back in the tag team picture…and they’re trying to sell them as biological brothers like The Steiners. Actual brothers or not, they make a solid team and it was a good match between two all-time great tandems. Another note on Ole’s return, this will also spark some screwy, notoriously bad ideas for WCW as he eventually takes over the booking duties.

Chris King Looks Back at WWE Clash In The Castle 2022
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
We are a few weeks away from WWE Clash In Italy PLE, which airs on May 31st. Chris King has gone back to look at the 2022 Clash At The Castle PLE and the matches with the most important future implications.
Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky
All six superstars started the match in front of this wild UK crowd. The babyfaces took advantage early with a triple suplex, and Bianca Bel-Air hit her patented springboard moonsault and covered Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai for a near fall. Alexa Bliss and Sky got the match going with some fast-paced offense. Bliss hit their Glitz Flip, and Sky tagged in the leader of Damage Control. Despite the crowd chanting for Bayley, “I wanna know, will you be my girl?” the methodical heel would purposely tag out for most of this match.
Bliss hit a beautiful sunset flip powerbomb and covered Sky, but Kai was the legal participant, so she ate a huge kick. Asuka and Sky now went toe-to-toe with some incredibly fast-paced action (I can’t wait to watch their match at Backlash); these two have insane chemistry. The crowd wanted the Raw Women’s Champion and Bayley tagged in. The EST is showcasing her raw power over all of Damage Control. The babyfaces looked to rally after a superplex off of Belair’s back. The heels took advantage of the numbers game; Kai hit her signature Kaio Kick, Bayley delivered Rose Plant, and Sky hit her picture-perfect moonsault. Bayley got the huge victory for Damage Control!
- This was a breakout performance for the new dangerous trio “Damage Control.” Bayley was such a genius changing the theme music so the crowd couldn’t sing it. That’s Heel 101. Bayley tagging out and not giving the UK crowd what they wanted was brilliant.
- Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky would run roughshod on SmackDown for the entire year with some amazing performances, including headlining WarGames. The Damage Control storyline would continue through the next two years, and Bayley would ultimately win the Women’s
Championship from Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40.
Gunther VS. Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)
Ludwig Kaiser introduced Giovanni Vinci, bringing back together Imperium as ‘The Ring General’ made his way down to the ring. The bell rang, and the punishment began as Sheamus’s chest was already red. Gunter chopped ‘The Celtic Warrior’ right off the turnbuckle to the outside. The challenger was writhing in pain as Gunther locked in a Boston Crab.
Sheamus was fighting for his life to become a grand-slam champion here, taking all of the champions’ brutality. Gunther delivered a nasty bodyslam to Sheamus on the outside. The Celtic Warrior was finally able to deliver The 10 Beats of the Bodhran for a count of twelve.
Midway through the match, both the champion and the challenger got into a slugfest, and Sheamus hit a loud knee strike for a two-count! Sheamus delivered White Noise for another near-fall. The entire UK crowd was on their feet as the Brogue Kick was countered;
Gunther hit his patented dropkick into the corner. Sheamus lifted Gunther up for the Celtic Cross from the turnbuckle for a count of 2.99! The Celtic Warrior tried to go for the brogue kick, but his back gave out. The Intercontinental Champion delivered a powerbomb followed by a colossal lariat to retain his prestigious title.
Sheamus got a standing ovation from the raucous UK crowd despite his loss. He may not have won the intercontinental title, but he won their respect!
- Both Brutes stood in the middle of the ring, staring at each other without throwing a punch as their faction members fought to solidify a singles match with no interference. That was so brilliant and creative to see. As soon as the match got underway, both superstars beat the holy hell of each other for 20+ minutes.
- ‘The Ring General’ would have the longest reign of 666 days in WWE history as Intercontinental Champion, defeating the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable. He would eventually lose to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, but Gunther has the bar so high with such an amazing reign.
Edge & Rey Mysterio VS. The Judgement Day
Finn Balor and Rey Mysterio started the tag team match with some hard chops in the corner. Mysterio bounced back with some head-scissors takedown, and Damien Priest tagged in and clocked Edge with a nasty right hand. ‘The Rated-R Superstar was all fired up with some quick offense, sending Mysterio onto both JD members on the outside.
Priest and Balor utilized the numbers game to take out their opponents with a leg drop and some double-team maneuvers. Mysterio had taken a lot of punishment and wanted to make the tag to Edge, but Priest prevented the tag with a big boot.
The former leader of the JD came in firing on all cylinders, hitting some clotheslines and nailing Balor with an Edgecution. The UK crowd was going wild for Edge as he delivered his tag-partner’s signature 619, followed by a splash from Mysterio for a near-fall.
Edge intercepted a chokeslam attempt on Mysterio with a spear to the outside! Dominik interfered to help his dad hit a sunset flip powerbomb, and Rhea Ripley made him pay. Mysterio and Edge ensured the victory with a 619 and a picture-perfect Spear!
Following the match, Dominik would low-blow Edge and take his father’s head off with a wicked clothesline. This was the last time he was side-by-side with his father for the foreseeable future in WWE.
- Edge was trying to get comeuppance on the faction he helped create and was kicked out of. The Judgment Day had been targeting and terrorizing Rey’s son Dominik for months now, who was at ringside. ‘The Rated-R Superstar would ultimately get his revenge on JD at WrestleMania 39, when he faced “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell.
- This was the birth of Dirty Dom, after being jealous of his dad choosing Edge as his tag partner instead of him. After the match, Dominik gave Edge a low blow and clotheslined his dad’s head off to a loud cheer from
the crowd. His heel turn has been the greatest creative decision in his young career.
- Dirty Dom is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time NXT North American Champion, and current AAA Mega Champion during his time in The Judgment Day, and he’s one step away from becoming world heavyweight champion.
Roman Reigns VS. Drew McIntrye (WWE Undisputed Universal Championship)
The always overconfident and arrogant undisputed champion and his challenger locked up with the power of one-upmanship. Reigns had been trash-talking his opponent, and McIntyre made his rival back away. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion looks shook because of this insane UK crowd.
The champion answered back with some heavy right hands to his challenger. Reigns looks scared as McIntrye has his way with the champion. Karrion Kross and Scarlet provided a distraction, which allowed Reigns to take advantage. The confident champion now is slowing down the match with explosive, powerful offense like we’ve seen throughout his title reign thus far.
Reigns delivered a big boot, and his challenger kicked out at one! The champion mocked and trash-talked McIntrye and delivered some nasty punches. Both superstars tried to deliver suplexes to each other but to no avail. Reigns then grabbed the mic for Cardiff to acknowledge their Tribal Chief, and The Scottish Warrior hit a Glasgow Kiss to the champion. McIntyre fired up and delivered his patented belly-to-belly throws. The challenger wanted a Claymore Kick as Reigns left the ring. A spinebuster into a jackknife pinfall gave McIntrye a near-fall.
The champion intercepted a Claymore Kick with a devastating Superman Punch for a two-count. The champion locked in the guillotine choke hold in an attempt to get McIntrye to submit. The challenger speared the champion through the barricade. Reigns again intercepted a Claymore Kick with another spear for a 2.99!
McIntyre clocked Reigns with a Claymore Kick to the back of the head and into the referee, Charles Robinson. Austin Theory then made an attempt to cash in his MITB, but Tyson Fury knocked his lights out from the crowd. Back in the ring, the champion has a chair and ate a Claymore Kick for yet another near-fall!
A slugfest ensued between both superstars, followed by a blitz of offense, a headbutt, a spear by the challenger, and a Claymore Kick. McIntyre was one second away from being WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out before the three-count. Reigns capitalized and delivered a massive spear for the victory!
- ‘The Scottish Warrior’ Drew McIntrye made an amazing entrance, which was highlighted by a storybook video package with his Broken Dreams theme song! The raucous crowd was red-hot for the biggest match of McIntyre’s career since his breakout year in 2020, which was thwarted by Covid. The UK crowd was chanting, “Oh, Drew McIntyre,” before the champion made his entrance.
- Roman Reigns always looks like a million bucks during his elaborate entrance; this time he was all alone. ‘The Tribal Chief’ had his most difficult title defense to date. Drew McIntyre has always been a thorn in Reigns’ side, ever since returning to WWE in 2018. Reigns went on to have a history-making 1,316-day title reign until Cody Rhodes defeated him at WrestleMania 40. The Tribal Chief won this year’s Royal Rumble and won the World Championship from CM Punk in a five-star classic.
- Solo Sikoa made his shocking debut when McIntrye delivered a Claymore Kick and pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. The Scottish Warrior has not had the same amount of momentum since the PLE. Yes, he won the world title for about four minutes and was the WWE Undisputed Champion for a month this year, but still, he hasn’t felt like a dangerous threat. Since Sikoa’s debut on the main roster, he’s been the silent enforcer for The Bloodline, the Tribal Chief, and now the leader of the MFTs. He has portrayed a menacing and funny heel at times, and I could see him becoming WWE or World Heavyweight Champion by next year.

Chris King Looks Back: Edge vs Randy Orton in the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.
‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.
The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.
Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.
In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.
The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.
The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!
Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!
