In some interesting news, the WWE recently filed two new trademarks on May 30th for the NWO name. The NWO is of course arguably the most popular faction in wrestling history and is credited with sparking wrestling’s boom in popularity in the late 1990’s. The group headed by Hollywood Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash ran roughshod over WCW and became the driving force in the company beating the WWF’s Monday Night RAW in the ratings for 83 straight weeks. The trio would later reprise the faction in the WWE in 2002.

The trademark filings read as follows:

“Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing and staging events with wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely blogs, in the fields of sports entertainment.”

“Clothing, namely, tops, shirts, jackets, sweatshirts, hoodies; outerwear, namely, coats; bottoms, pants, shorts, underwear, dresses, pajamas, lingerie, clothing ties, scarves, gloves, swimwear; Halloween and masquerade costumes; footwear, namely, shoes, sneakers, slippers, flip flops, boots; headwear, namely, hats, caps; wrist bands; bandanas.”

EA’s Take: This is interesting due to the fact that WWE already has some trademarks for the NWO, so there are some jumping to the conclusion that the NWO will be returning to television in some fashion. I even caught one report claiming that AJ Styles is reforming the group due to his Bullet Club past. In my best Miz impression, “Really? Really?! REALLY?!”. Talk about taking a leap. We won’t give you water trash like that here at The Chairshot and while I was a big NWO fan 20 years ago, I see no reason or need for WWE to relive it. I see this as nothing more than the company “crossing their t’s and dotting their i’s” in a sense. We’ve seen them file trademarks for other things to prevent them from being used outside the WWE (such as the ‘Too Sweet’ hand gesture for merchandise) and that’s what I believe this to be as well.
