WWE News: Preview For Tonight’s SmackDown Live & 205 Live (7/17/18)
With WWE’s Extreme Rules now in the books, the focus of the WWE Universe can shift SummerSlam from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on August 19th. We already saw some early plans for the event start coming together last night on RAW and now tonight, the blue brand will start its road with SmackDown Live from the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
After winning the United States Title at Extreme Rules in controversial fashion, we already know that Jeff Hardy has invoked his automatic rematch clause against Shinsuke Nakamura for tonight. Here’s a preview of what else to expect on SmackDown Live, which hits the airwaves at 8PM EST on the USA Network. You can also keep up with the action at 8PM with Mitchell’s Live Report right here on The Chairshot:
- Jeff Hardy gets his rematch for the United States Title against Shinsuke Nakamura
- What is next for WWE Champion AJ Styles?
- Can Asuka bounce back from another loss to Carmella?
- With Kane sidelined, Daniel Bryan is now on his own
As is the case every week, the WWE’s Cruiserweight Division will take over the WWE Network immediately following SmackDown for 205 Live. Here’s what you can expect when the high-flyers hit the air at 10PM EST:
- TJP is fully prepared this time around as he takes on Noam Dar
- Can Lio Rush keep momentum rolling when he goes one-on-one with Akira Tozawa?
Suprised they let @itsLioRush film promos at Oshkosh. https://t.co/oGjMVZsaXs

This just doesn’t happen. Holding the @WWE Championship means being prepared ANY day for ANY match. #SDLive is still MY show. #Phenomenal https://t.co/mSm2H9zdiv

Former WWE Star Reveals How Company Tests Wrestlers for an “Attitude Problem”
A former WWE star took to social media to explain, in brief, how WWE evaluates its talent to determine whether they have an “attitude problem.” The post offered a glimpse into the company’s behind-the-scenes vetting process, suggesting that behavior and professionalism are actively monitored during a wrestler’s time with the promotion.
While the explanation was limited, the revelation underscores WWE’s focus on maintaining locker-room culture and managing talent dynamics. Fans and industry observers may read the post as further evidence that character and conduct behind the curtain can be as consequential as in-ring performance.

WWE Backlash Match Sparks “Clone War” Debate in Wrestling Community
Wrestling fans and insiders are abuzz after a match at WWE Backlash was accused of “copycatting” a formula previously used by an independent wrestler, a situation some are calling a new “clone war” in the industry. The controversy highlights growing concerns about creative overlap between major promotions and the indie scene.
The debate raises questions about originality and recognition, with observers wondering whether mainstream companies should acknowledge or adapt indie ideas more transparently. As the story spreads, fans and performers alike are watching to see how promotions handle influence, credit, and creative borrowing moving forward.
