Charlotte Flair made her return on SmackDown this week and was given an opportunity to be part of the SmackDown Women’s Title match at SummerSlam. Despite missing six weeks because of injury and losing her rematch clean to Carmella. This development didn’t go over very well with Charlotte’s best friend, Becky Lynch, who earned her title shot last week after spending weeks beating every female heel on the SmackDown just to get the chance to face Carmella and she was visibly unhappy with Charlotte’s victory.

WWE had been teasing the possibility of this feud back at Money in the Bank, when Charlotte and Becky were both involved in the match and came to blows at the top of a ladder over the MitB briefcase. Unfortunately, Charlotte’s injury and surgery put those plans on hold, but it seems to that WWE is committed to giving us this feud, even with the six week lapse.

Charlotte’s seeming entitlement to the Women’s Title in whichever promotion she’s in has always been a sticking point with some fans and it’s been felt that her family connections have eased her way in WWE at the expense of the rest of the Women’s Division. In her post-match interview on Tuesday, Charlotte even said that it hadn’t really occurred to her that by beating Carmella, she was essentially robbing her best friend of a well-earned one-on-one title shot. Of course, Charlotte’s had to work just as hard, if not harder, to prove that she’s more than just Ric Flair’s daughter and she’s just as deserving of opportunities as the other women in the division, but her perceived sense of entitlement is bound to cause friction between her and Becky and the parts of the WWE Universe who didn’t want to see Charlotte in the title hunt so soon after dropping it to Carmella after a near six month title reign, especially at Becky’s expense.

This situation is pretty easy storyline building for WWE and would make it easy for fan-favorite Becky to turn on her best friend and still remain sympathetic by having her frame the turn as being all Charlotte’s fault for always stealing the limelight for herself and getting title opportunities just for showing her face, while Becky has had to work twice as hard just to earn the chance.

I think the bigger question coming out of this storyline, which could be SmackDown’s answer to the start and stop Sasha/Bayley storyline, is: How long will this go on and will the SmackDown Women’s Title be involved? Some of the scenarios are:

1. Carmella wins due to bickering between Becky and Charlotte. This is a very likely scenario if WWE decides that they’d rather keep the title out of the feud and have Carmella feud with someone else. If Carmella were to win because Charlotte broke up a pin attempt by Becky, that could easily be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

2. Charlotte wins by pinning Carmella. This is another ‘last straw’ situation for Becky and would make sense if WWE decided to pull the trigger on a long-term Charlotte vs Becky title feud heading into Evolution.

3. Becky wins by pinning Charlotte. This is a good scenario if WWE either doesn’t want to make Becky a full blown heel or would rather turn Charlotte heel again. We’ve seen in the past that Charlotte doesn’t like to lose to anyone, but especially not to Becky. The last time Becky beat Charlotte in a one-on-one situation, Charlotte finished turning heel and beat Becky up.

4. Charlotte wins by pinning Becky. This would be the ultimate ‘last straw’ situation for Becky. Not only did Charlotte steal the one-on-one SummerSlam match Becky worked so hard to get, but then pins her to get the title. It would also make the heel turn very sympathetic and make Charlotte the villain without turning her heel.

Personally, I want Becky to turn heel and it seems that WWE is heading in that direction, but the fact that this story is interesting enough on its own to not NEED to be about the title is a great thing for the Women’s Division whichever way WWE goes.
