Chairshot WWE Week In Review

SmackDown Live

WWE Championship: Styles answered Samoa Joe’s promo tonight. It says something about Joe’s promo last week that heel commentator Graves even condemned it. Styles berated Joe for his comments about Styles’ family. Styles admitted that being a wrestler keeps him away from his family most of the year and that his wife is basically a single parent because he’s almost never home.

Styles also stated that Joe knew Styles’ family and that they’d been friends for over a decade, sharing the same nasty apartment and stale pizza, a friendship Joe threw away last week. Styles vowed to not only beat Samoa Joe for the WWE Title, but to make sure Joe can’t walk out of SummerSlam at all.

WWE United States Championship: Nakamura may be facing Jeff Hardy at SummerSlam, but he found himself facing a rather surprising competitor on Tuesday: R-Truth. Truth seemed to think that he should be involved in the US Title hunt and vowed to get it the way everyone else did: Pinning Carmella. I’m sure that sounded a lot funnier in the writers’ room than it did on camera. Nakamura said something to Truth in Japanese that scandalized Truth and apparently can’t be repeated.

Nakamura and Truth did face off in a match tonight with Nakamura picking up the victory, however, Nakamura’s going to have his work cut out for him come SummerSlam when he faces Jeff Hardy.

SmackDown Live Women’s Championship: Carmella wasn’t in action tonight, besides running her mouth on commentary, but Becky and Charlotte were involved in a tag team match against the IIconics. Before that, Charlotte tried to clear the air with her best friend. Charlotte swore that she hadn’t meant to steal Becky’s spotlight last week by putting herself in the Women’s Title Match at SummerSlam. Becky said that she wants to be happy for Charlotte, but that she’d wanted to face Carmella one on one. Becky wants to be the best, which means she has to beat the best, Charlotte.

Team Thelma and Louise worked well together tonight against the IIconics with Charlotte getting the submission victory by Figure Eight. However, going by Becky’s face, things are not as rosy as Charlotte thinks they are.

Backstage, both women were celebrating their victory, but both accept that they won’t be friends come SummerSlam.

SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship: The Bludgeon Brothers were in action against a job team, for some reason, and it was a short and nasty one.

Tonight, was also the final round in the tag team #1 Contenders tournament and it was down to New Day vs The Bar. This was a great match with New Day picking up the victory. So, the SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship just got made: The Bludgeon Brothers will face New Day on August 19th.

(I’m not going to lie, I’m not happy that the Bar lost. New Day and the Usos have been in the title picture for a year, while the Bar have been barely on TV since they were sent to SmackDown.)

Miz vs Daniel Bryan: Miz seems to have had a change of heart after refusing Daniel Bryan’s challenge to a match at SummerSlam. Miz did accept in a video on Tuesday afternoon, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated matches since Bryan was cleared to wrestle back in March.

Byron Saxton had the task of interviewing Miz on SmackDown. Miz again attacked Bryan for Total Divas and Total Bellas, touting his own show’s success. Miz said that he was done sharing the spotlight with Daniel Bryan and people saying that he was hiding from Bryan.  Having had enough of this, Bryan attacked Miz and managed to get in some offense before being thrown into potted plant. Miz got away, but a demented looking Bryan was in pursuit.

Randy Orton: Randy Orton kicked off SmackDown on Tuesday. Orton called out the WWE Universe for believing and vowed to destroy every superstar they’d put on a pedestal instead of him. He also said that he’d erased the enigma of Jeff Hardy by wiping off Hardy’s facepaint last week, saying that now Hardy wouldn’t come out and face him. He also cited his impressive resume in WWE, ignoring the fact that Hardy had done all of that a couple of times over and that Hardy has been successful in almost every promotion he worked for, while Orton has only worked in WWE.

Lana vs Zelina Vega: Lana got a rematch against Vega and Rusev vowed to be there and support her. Aiden English begged both Rusev and Lana to give him another chance and Rusev agreed but wouldn’t let English go with them to ringside.

This match was a mess and really just served to give Rusev and Almas a chance to fight and to further the alienation between English and Rusev/Lana.

On Saturday morning, however, it was reported that Rusev and Lana will face Almas and Vega at SummerSlam on the kickoff show in a mixed tag match.

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?

Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…

Brock Lesnar WWE WrestleMania 42 Retirement

Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…

At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.

While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.

‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?

I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!

With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!

Penta WWE Intercontinental Championship WrestleMania 42

With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!

This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.

Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.

The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.

All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.

As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
