Up to their feet, Rhodes keeps it locked in.

Rude drives Rhodes to the corner and buries his shoulder into the midsection. Snapmare into a modified chinlock by the US Champ. The crowd is behind Rhodes who gets up to his feet, he tries to break the hold but Rude gets his knees up. Rude lifts Rhodes for a piledriver, it’s reversed into one by Rhodes and Austin has to save the count. Standing elbow drops by Rhodes, he goes for a splash and Rude lifts his knees. Rhodes is driven into Austin’s knee and a tag is made. Snapmare and Austin buries his knee into his opponent. Rhodes is driven into the turnbuckle, he reverses an Irish whip but Austin comes back with a clothesline.

A whip to the ropes and Rhodes gets his knee up. Rhodes with kicks to the ribs and Austin rolls outside. Rhodes rolls him back in, they hit the ropes and The Natural catches Austin with an abdominal stretch. Stunning Steve breaks it with a hip toss, but Rhodes doesn’t let the momentum change and catches him in it again. Forearm to the ribs and Windham is tagged in, Rhodes holds Austin for a flying clothesline and Austin kicks out at two. Austin reverses the whip to the ropes and hits a back body drop. Rude is back in, and he throws kidney shots followed by a belly to back suplex. Austin is tagged back in, Austin sets Windham on the top turnbuckle.

Windham fights him off with head butts, they hit the ropes and Windham hits a cross body. Madusa is up on the apron and Rude grabs a running Windham’s hair. He’s tagged in, goes for the top rope and lands a missile dropkick, Windham gets the shoulder up. Rude lifts Windham and lands the piledriver, Rhodes saves the pin. Windham tries fighting from his knees, he crawls between Rude’s legs but Rick grabs the trunks. Austin is tagged in and stops Windham with a double axe handle. Rhodes is given a cheap shot, Austin lifts Windham with a vertical suplex and there is a near fall.

Reverse chin lock by the TV champ, the crowd chants for Barry. Windham with shots to the midsection, Austin with a drop toe hold to prevent a tag and here comes Rude. Windham’s head hits the turnbuckle a few times, he finally blocks it and gives Rude a taste. Rude is quick to come back to the attack, scoop slam and a taunt from Rude. Front face lock on Windham who is reaching for Rhodes. He lifts Rude with a back body drop but Rick is quick to make a tag to Austin. Stunning Steve cuts off the tag and stomps on Windham before dumping him through the middle rope. Austin pursues him and tosses him back in the ring. Windham hits the ropes and lands some strikes until Austin gets his boot up. Snapmare into a chinlock by Austin.

Austin gets leverage from the ropes and Rude, the ref walks off Rhodes and Madusa and Rude changes places with Austin. Rude prevents a Windham tag and tags Austin back in after holding a headlock. Shoulders to the midsection by Stunning Steve, Windham is sent for the ride and a back body drop. He follows with big rights on the mat. Windham reverses a scoop slam with an inside cradle and almost catches a break. They’re both up quickly, hitting simultaneous clotheslines. Belly to back suplex by Austin and a tag is made to Rude. Knees to the midsection by the US champ, Windham reverses the whip to the ropes and a hits an atomic drop.

Rude ducks a clothesline and on the comeback they collide head first and both men are down. Austin is tagged in, he rushes to prevent a tag on the other side as Windham collapses toward his corner and in comes Rhodes. The Natural is fired up and lands a bionic elbow and clothesline on Austin. Rude is dropkicked out of the ring, Austin reverses the Irish whip, Rhodes climbs the turnbuckle and lands a reverse elbow. He goes for the pin and Rude makes the save. Windham rushes in to fend off Rude, and he knocks the Alliance member’s heads together. Rhodes pursues Rude on the outside, while Austin and Windham go to work in the ring. Austin can’t lift Windham for the piledriver, Rhodes who is the legal man rushes to the top rope and hits Austin with the flying clothesline to pick up the W.
Winners: ‘The Natural’ Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham (Rhodes/Top Rope Clothesline)

  • EA’s Take: You can’t go wrong with these four. Rude and Austin already boast gold so they don’t “need” this and it makes for a strong, clean win for Rhodes and Windham. It does feel like this could have happened later in the tournament though.

Backstage: Eric Bischoff is getting a word with Big Van Vader & Harley Race. Race explains that his client is more than ready and there are going to be a lot of disappointed little Stingers. Vader is ready to take the champ’s most prized possession.

Match #4 – NWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament Semi-Finals: WCW World Tag Team Champions ‘Dr. Death’ Steve Williams & Terry ‘Bam Bam’ Gordy vs. Nikita Koloff & Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat
Steamboat and Gordy start us off, they tie up, Gordy with a side headlock. Shoulder tackle by Gordy followed by a side headlock takedown. Steamboat tries rolling Gordy over but he’s caught. Up to a vertical base, The Dragon pounds on Gordy’s ribs. They hit the ropes, hip toss and arm drag by Steamboat. Quck tag to Dr. Death and he’s greeted with an armdrag, worked into an armbar. Williams up to his feet with a drop toehold and he grabs a headlock. Steamboat reverses back into the hammerlock and he drives the knee into Williams’ back. Steamboat with a wristlock, Williams tries a single leg takedown and they work to the ropes.

The referee calls for a break. Both men jockey for position, fireman carry by Steamboat and he holds onto the arm. Vertical base, Williams powers to his own corner and Gordy tags himself in. Steamboat fights off both opponents and escapes the vulnerable position. Collar and elbow, wristlock by Steamboat and a tag is made to Koloff. Nikita pounds on the arm, Gordy powers him to the corner and Williams makes his return. Drop toehold by Koloff, followed with an armbar. Williams gets position in the corner, the ref tries to break them up but the two big men wrestle around in the middle of the ring. Koloff tries to hold the waist, but Gordy makes the tag back in. Collar and elbow, they hit the ropes and neither men move one another on the shoulder blocks.

A dropkick takes Gordy off his feet. They circle the ring, Gordy with a single leg take down and works into a reverse chinlock, maneuvered into a body scissor hold. Koloff tries to force his way out and does so, front facelock by Nikita. Up to vertical and they jockey for position. Gordy is tagged back in, Koloff escapes the opponent’s corner. Collar and elbow, a tag is made to The Dragon and Steamboat grabs a side headlock. They hit the ropes, great quickness by Steamboat, resulting in an arm drag. Tag is made to Williams, they hit the ropes and Dr. Death hits a clothesline and gets a near fall. They roll around the ring, both attempting pins. They slow it down, Williams pokes the eyes and goes on offense.

Steamboat ducks a clothesline and goes for the crucifix, Williams backs him into the corner instead. Chops by Williams in the corner, Steamboat turns him around with some of his own. Headbutt and a snapmare by Williams, Gordy is tagged in and he scoop slams The Dragon. He slams Steamboat again and knees him in the head. Steamboat ducks an elbow off the ropes, but falls victim to a clothesline. Tag is made to Williams and the champs land double shoulder blocks, Steamboat kicks out at two. Standing elbow by Williams and another quick tag is made to Gordy. Bam Bam whips Steamboat down by the hair, front face lock and Steamboat reaches for the tag. Koloff gets lectured by the referee as Steamboat falls victim to a double vertical suplex.

Williams makes the pin, but the ref questions his legality because he never saw a tag. Gordy comes back in, they exchange rights and chops. Steamboat gets some momentum but a tag is made to Williams. Steamboat is sent for the ride, he ducks a clothesline but is caught out of the air and hit with a back breaker. Williams holds Steamboat on the mat, working his shoulder and hooking the leg. Steamboat fights with rights, Williams drags him to the corner to tag Gordy back in. Steamboat is sent to the ropes, he catches a modified DDT but favors his ribs. A tag is made to Koloff, the well rested Russian takes out Gordy with shoulder blocks.

He tries a forth and Gordy steps out of the way, driving his face into the canvass. He gets a two count and tags in Dr. Death. Williams with some stomps on Koloff and he slingshots Nikita. Another slingshot across the top rope, and he locks in a head scissor submission. Williams relinquishes the hold, he gets kicks in the face and Gordy is tagged back in. Koloff reverses the Irish whip, goes for the knee and Bam Bam moves. Gordy locks in an STF and the ref checks in on Koloff. He tries to fight out of it but a quick tag is made back to Williams. He drops an elbow on Koloff’s head, Koloff fights from his knee but Williams doesn’t lose control.

He turns Koloff into a Boston crab, the crowd starts chanting Ni-Ki-Ta. A tag is made to Gordy, Koloff tries crawling to Steamboat but he’s cut off. Gordy goes for the STF once again but doesn’t get the front face lock. Koloff pushes up, lands some elbows to Gordy’s face to break the hold. Williams is tagged back in, he cuts off the tag to Steamboat again. Stomps to Koloff’s head and a cheapshot is sent to The Dragon. They hit the ropes and Dr. Death executes a power slam, Koloff kicks out at two. Williams lifts Koloff on his shoulder, rushes the turnbuckle, Nikita pushes out of it and they collide in the middle of the ring.

Both men are slow to get up, Koloff is up first, Williams tries to hold his ankle but a tag is made to Steamboat. The Dragon lands right hands on both of his opponents. Chops are given to Williams who is then whipped right into his own partner. Steamboat lifts Dr. Death with a belly to back suplex. Gordy goes in for the save and he’s fended off by Koloff. Steamboat to the top rope and he hits an axe handle to the back of Williams’ head. The ref corrals Gordy and Koloff to their corners. Steamboat heads up for another high risk move, Gordy comes over to shove him off the top turnbuckle. Williams catches The Dragon in midair, rams him into the opposite turnbuckle and slams him down in the middle of the ring. The WCW Tag Team Champs advance in this tournament.
Winners: ‘Dr. Death’ Steve Williams & Terry ‘Bam Bam’ Gordy (Williams/Spinebuster)

  • EA’s Take: I hate to say it, but this one was surprisingly dull. It struck me as a match where they opted to call everything in the ring, but had no fire in their bellies for it and I’ve never really been a big fan of Dr. Death’s work. In the end, they are the WCW Tag Team Champions, so it only makes sense they advance to the finals.

Chris King Looks Back at WWE Clash In The Castle 2022

With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!

Roman Reigns WWE Clash At The Castle 2022

With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!

We are a few weeks away from WWE Clash In Italy PLE, which airs on May 31st. Chris King has gone back to look at the 2022 Clash At The Castle PLE and the matches with the most important future implications.

Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky

All six superstars started the match in front of this wild UK crowd. The babyfaces took advantage early with a triple suplex, and Bianca Bel-Air hit her patented springboard moonsault and covered Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai for a near fall. Alexa Bliss and Sky got the match going with some fast-paced offense. Bliss hit their Glitz Flip, and Sky tagged in the leader of Damage Control. Despite the crowd chanting for Bayley, “I wanna know, will you be my girl?” the methodical heel would purposely tag out for most of this match.

Bliss hit a beautiful sunset flip powerbomb and covered Sky, but Kai was the legal participant, so she ate a huge kick. Asuka and Sky now went toe-to-toe with some incredibly fast-paced action (I can’t wait to watch their match at Backlash); these two have insane chemistry. The crowd wanted the Raw Women’s Champion and Bayley tagged in. The EST is showcasing her raw power over all of Damage Control. The babyfaces looked to rally after a superplex off of Belair’s back. The heels took advantage of the numbers game; Kai hit her signature Kaio Kick, Bayley delivered Rose Plant, and Sky hit her picture-perfect moonsault. Bayley got the huge victory for Damage Control!

  • This was a breakout performance for the new dangerous trio “Damage Control.” Bayley was such a genius changing the theme music so the crowd couldn’t sing it. That’s Heel 101. Bayley tagging out and not giving the UK crowd what they wanted was brilliant.
  • Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky would run roughshod on SmackDown for the entire year with some amazing performances, including headlining WarGames. The Damage Control storyline would continue through the next two years, and Bayley would ultimately win the Women’s

Championship from Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40.

Gunther VS. Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)

Ludwig Kaiser introduced Giovanni Vinci, bringing back together Imperium as ‘The Ring General’ made his way down to the ring. The bell rang, and the punishment began as Sheamus’s chest was already red. Gunter chopped ‘The Celtic Warrior’ right off the turnbuckle to the outside. The challenger was writhing in pain as Gunther locked in a Boston Crab.

Sheamus was fighting for his life to become a grand-slam champion here, taking all of the champions’ brutality. Gunther delivered a nasty bodyslam to Sheamus on the outside. The Celtic Warrior was finally able to deliver The 10 Beats of the Bodhran for a count of twelve.

Midway through the match, both the champion and the challenger got into a slugfest, and Sheamus hit a loud knee strike for a two-count! Sheamus delivered White Noise for another near-fall. The entire UK crowd was on their feet as the Brogue Kick was countered;

Gunther hit his patented dropkick into the corner. Sheamus lifted Gunther up for the Celtic Cross from the turnbuckle for a count of 2.99! The Celtic Warrior tried to go for the brogue kick, but his back gave out. The Intercontinental Champion delivered a powerbomb followed by a colossal lariat to retain his prestigious title.

Sheamus got a standing ovation from the raucous UK crowd despite his loss. He may not have won the intercontinental title, but he won their respect!

  • Both Brutes stood in the middle of the ring, staring at each other without throwing a punch as their faction members fought to solidify a singles match with no interference. That was so brilliant and creative to see. As soon as the match got underway, both superstars beat the holy hell of each other for 20+ minutes.
  • ‘The Ring General’ would have the longest reign of 666 days in WWE history as Intercontinental Champion, defeating the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable. He would eventually lose to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, but Gunther has the bar so high with such an amazing reign.

Edge & Rey Mysterio VS. The Judgement Day

Finn Balor and Rey Mysterio started the tag team match with some hard chops in the corner. Mysterio bounced back with some head-scissors takedown, and Damien Priest tagged in and clocked Edge with a nasty right hand. ‘The Rated-R Superstar was all fired up with some quick offense, sending Mysterio onto both JD members on the outside.

Priest and Balor utilized the numbers game to take out their opponents with a leg drop and some double-team maneuvers. Mysterio had taken a lot of punishment and wanted to make the tag to Edge, but Priest prevented the tag with a big boot.

The former leader of the JD came in firing on all cylinders, hitting some clotheslines and nailing Balor with an Edgecution. The UK crowd was going wild for Edge as he delivered his tag-partner’s signature 619, followed by a splash from Mysterio for a near-fall.

Edge intercepted a chokeslam attempt on Mysterio with a spear to the outside! Dominik interfered to help his dad hit a sunset flip powerbomb, and Rhea Ripley made him pay. Mysterio and Edge ensured the victory with a 619 and a picture-perfect Spear!

Following the match, Dominik would low-blow Edge and take his father’s head off with a wicked clothesline. This was the last time he was side-by-side with his father for the foreseeable future in WWE.

  • Edge was trying to get comeuppance on the faction he helped create and was kicked out of. The Judgment Day had been targeting and terrorizing Rey’s son Dominik for months now, who was at ringside. ‘The Rated-R Superstar would ultimately get his revenge on JD at WrestleMania 39, when he faced “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell.
  • This was the birth of Dirty Dom, after being jealous of his dad choosing Edge as his tag partner instead of him. After the match, Dominik gave Edge a low blow and clotheslined his dad’s head off to a loud cheer from

the crowd. His heel turn has been the greatest creative decision in his young career.

  • Dirty Dom is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time NXT North American Champion, and current AAA Mega Champion during his time in The Judgment Day, and he’s one step away from becoming world heavyweight champion.

Roman Reigns VS. Drew McIntrye (WWE Undisputed Universal Championship)

The always overconfident and arrogant undisputed champion and his challenger locked up with the power of one-upmanship. Reigns had been trash-talking his opponent, and McIntyre made his rival back away. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion looks shook because of this insane UK crowd.

The champion answered back with some heavy right hands to his challenger. Reigns looks scared as McIntrye has his way with the champion. Karrion Kross and Scarlet provided a distraction, which allowed Reigns to take advantage. The confident champion now is slowing down the match with explosive, powerful offense like we’ve seen throughout his title reign thus far.

Reigns delivered a big boot, and his challenger kicked out at one! The champion mocked and trash-talked McIntrye and delivered some nasty punches. Both superstars tried to deliver suplexes to each other but to no avail. Reigns then grabbed the mic for Cardiff to acknowledge their Tribal Chief, and The Scottish Warrior hit a Glasgow Kiss to the champion. McIntyre fired up and delivered his patented belly-to-belly throws. The challenger wanted a Claymore Kick as Reigns left the ring. A spinebuster into a jackknife pinfall gave McIntrye a near-fall.

The champion intercepted a Claymore Kick with a devastating Superman Punch for a two-count. The champion locked in the guillotine choke hold in an attempt to get McIntrye to submit. The challenger speared the champion through the barricade. Reigns again intercepted a Claymore Kick with another spear for a 2.99!

McIntyre clocked Reigns with a Claymore Kick to the back of the head and into the referee, Charles Robinson. Austin Theory then made an attempt to cash in his MITB, but Tyson Fury knocked his lights out from the crowd. Back in the ring, the champion has a chair and ate a Claymore Kick for yet another near-fall!

A slugfest ensued between both superstars, followed by a blitz of offense, a headbutt, a spear by the challenger, and a Claymore Kick. McIntyre was one second away from being WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out before the three-count. Reigns capitalized and delivered a massive spear for the victory!

  • ‘The Scottish Warrior’ Drew McIntrye made an amazing entrance, which was highlighted by a storybook video package with his Broken Dreams theme song! The raucous crowd was red-hot for the biggest match of McIntyre’s career since his breakout year in 2020, which was thwarted by Covid. The UK crowd was chanting, “Oh, Drew McIntyre,” before the champion made his entrance.
  • Roman Reigns always looks like a million bucks during his elaborate entrance; this time he was all alone. ‘The Tribal Chief’ had his most difficult title defense to date. Drew McIntyre has always been a thorn in Reigns’ side, ever since returning to WWE in 2018. Reigns went on to have a history-making 1,316-day title reign until Cody Rhodes defeated him at WrestleMania 40. The Tribal Chief won this year’s Royal Rumble and won the World Championship from CM Punk in a five-star classic.
  • Solo Sikoa made his shocking debut when McIntrye delivered a Claymore Kick and pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. The Scottish Warrior has not had the same amount of momentum since the PLE. Yes, he won the world title for about four minutes and was the WWE Undisputed Champion for a month this year, but still, he hasn’t felt like a dangerous threat. Since Sikoa’s debut on the main roster, he’s been the silent enforcer for The Bloodline, the Tribal Chief, and now the leader of the MFTs. He has portrayed a menacing and funny heel at times, and I could see him becoming WWE or World Heavyweight Champion by next year.

Chris King Looks Back: Edge vs Randy Orton in the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”

Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!

Edge Randy Orton WWE Backlash 2020 Greatest Wrestling Match Ever

Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!

Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.

‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.

The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.

Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.

In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.

The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.

The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!

Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!
