Chairshot Classics: WWF Survivor Series ’88 – Teams Of Five Strive To Survive

Published

on

Backstage: Sean Mooney is joined by Bad News Brown. Bad News says he smelled a conspiracy when his own teammate attacked him. Everybody in the WWF wants to be the first one to take out Bad News, but he’s only concerned about one thing and that’s the WWF Championship. Mooney asks why he thinks he deserves a shot, Brown stating the reason is because he’s defeated everyone that’s been put in his path. Bad News has been trying to get ahold of WWF President Jack Tunney, but he can only avoid him so long. Savage needs a skirt in his corner, but Bad News doesn’t need anybody.

Backstage: ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund is in the locker room with Mr. Fuji & The Powers Of Pain. Fuji explains that he made Demolition the champions they are. Their heads got too big, thinking they knew more than the master. He searched for a new team and found The Powers Of Pain. Barbarian wonders what Demolition will do now that they’ve lost Mr. Fuji. Fuji again claims he did everything for Demolition, but they disrespected his discipline. Warlord says Demolition didn’t listen, but they will.

Backstage: ‘Mean’ Gene is now joined by co-captains Dino Bravo & Andre The Giant along with their teammates. Bobby Heenan talks about how much he has invested, asking Gene to picture the opposition being squeezed by the hands of The Giant. Dino says it’s no secret that he’s coming after Duggan, looking to bring shame to America. Rick Rude wants to show the world how to celebrate turkey day the ravishing way. Mr. Perfect calls his team the perfect combination. Andre talks about taking his team to victory last year, vowing to do it again.

Backstage: Sean Mooney is flanked by co-captains The Mega Powers and their squad. WWF Champion Randy Savage talks about the electricity tonight. Koko B. Ware says they can’t lose tonight, Hillbilly Jim says The Twin Towers will feel the heat, Hercules says welcome to the jungle. Hulk Hogan speaks about their being no weak links, feeling sorry for their opposition tonight. “What’cha gonna do when The Mega Powers run wild on you!”

Match #3 Survivor Series Elimination Match: Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, Ken Patera, Tito Santana, Scott Casey & ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan vs. Dino Bravo, Harley Race, ‘Mr. Perfect’ Curt Hennig, ‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude & Andre The Giant w/Frenchy Martin & Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan
Patera & Rude kick us off, Patera shoving Rude down out of the lock-up, showing off his power. They tie-up again and more of the same for The Ravishing One, Rude tags out to Dino and he grabs a side headlock. Patera pushes him into the ropes and they meet shoulders, Dino going to an armwringer and Hennig tags, coming off the top with a double axe. Patera overpowers him, backing him into his own corner and The Snake enters the match, working over the shoulder joint and tagging Tito.

Perfect grabs a side headlock, into ropes and he gets a shoulder knockdown, back in and Santana with an arm drag and a slam. Tito goes back to a wristlock, Hennig with a handful of hair backing him in the corner, Santana reverses a whip across and follows right into a back elbow. Bravo with a tag, heavy shots to Tito and Roberts blind tags, coming from behind for a double team on Dino. The Snake with rights and lefts, armwringer and a tag to Scott Casey, coming in with a whip and a back elbow. He sends Dino into the corner, goes for a monkey flip and gets caught in an inverted atomic drop. Harley enters the ring, belly to belly suplex, dropping a knee and hitting a vertical suplex before tagging out to Rude.

The Ravishing One drops forearms, slams Casey and covers for 2. Mr. Perfect tags, Rude whips Casey in and Hennig with a big clothesline. Perfect with a headbutt, hurting himself and Casey tags out to Santana, Tito coming in with a front facelock and quick tagging Patera. Double back elbow for Hennig, Patera with a snapmare and an elbow, followed by a tag to Hacksaw. Duggan drives Perfect into the top turnbuckle, Hennig reverses a whip into the corner and runs in, getting flattened by a right hand. Hacksaw takes a shot to the eyes, Hennig firing away with little effect and Duggan sends Perfect to the outside with a right hand.

Hacksaw back to the arm, tag to Casey who cradles the arm and slams Perfect, drops a leg and Hennig catches it, dragging Casey to his corner and tagging Rude. The Ravishing One with a clothesline out of the ropes, grinding for the crowd and scoring with heavy rights. Irish whip into the corner, Rude follows in and Casey side-steps, tagging out to Tito who comes in for the flying forearm and a near fall. Hacksaw back in, Rude ducks a couple shots, but gets caught in a slam, rolling away from an elbow drop. Rude to the eyes, Duggan with a whip and they collide heads, both men crumbling to the canvas.

Duggan tags to Patera, he slams The Ravishing One, takes him over and covers for a 2 count. He whips Rude into the corner, charges into a boot Rude connects with the Rude Awakening for the 3 count. Ken Patera has been eliminated. Scott Casey jumps right in and takes a shot to the eyes, Rude sends him into his own corner and Race tags in, connecting with a dropkick out of the ropes. Dino back in, Casey reverses a hiptoss attempt into a backslide for 2, grabs a headlock and gets sent into the ropes. Casey avoids a slam, tries a roll-up and gets pushed off, running right into the Side Slam and that’s it for him. Scott Casey has been eliminated.

Tito quick to rush in and unload on Bravo. Dino tags out quickly to Hennig, Santana catches him with an elbow and a small package for 2. Tito grabs a front facelock, tags to Duggan and he sends Perfect in for a back body drop, but instead eats a kick. Hennig is ruthless, but it doesn’t phase Hacksaw until he gets too close to Andre. The Giant punishes Duggan behind the ref’s back, Hennig taking advantage and tagging Rude in. Duggan fires back at Perfect, but Rude from behind with an ambush. Hacksaw reverses a whip, levels Rude with a clothesline and both men go down. Harley reaches in for the tag as Duggan tags to Santana, Race with left hands, Bravo back in and they double team Tito. Into the ropes, they meet shoulders, Santana ducks a couple shots and hits a crossbody for a 2 count.

Dino with big rights, sends Tito into the corner and charges, Santana hopping up for a sunset flip and getting a near fall. Harley back off the tag, spikes Tito with a piledriver, but can’t get the 3. He sends Santana in for a clothesline and another count of 2, then back into the ropes and Santana connects with a flying forearm and a count of 3. Harley Race has been eliminated. Andre finally enters the ring, stepping right in and unloading on Tito, then choking him in the ropes to the fullest extent of the 5 count. The Giant with more heavy shots, then squashing Santana with all his body weight.

Andre absolutely dominating Tito, sending him into the ropes, Santana tries a sunset flip, The Giant simply sits down on him and gets the pinfall. Tito Santana has been eliminated. Hacksaw sets in the 3 Point Stance behind Andre, connecting with a clothesline that sends The Giant back into the ropes where he gets tied up. Duggan unloads on the trapped Giant, tags to Roberts who also has a field day, firing away at everyone on the apron as well. The Snake chokes Andre, The Giant getting loose and landing a headbutt, tagging immediately out to Rude. The Ravishing One with a hard irish whip into the corner, more grinding from the crowd and another hard whip into the turnbuckles.

Rude drives Roberts into Hennig’s boot, Perfect tagging in and maintaining the advantage over The Snake, choking him in the bottom rope. Hennig with a slingshot into the bottom rope, Andre with more tactics behind the ref’s back, Perfect slapping The Snake. It riles Roberts up a little, but he can’t get to a tag and Bravo comes in. Roberts with rights and lefts, short arm clothesline and he calls for the DDT. Rude with a clothesline from the apron to prevent it, tagging in and slamming Jake face-first into the mat. The Ravishing One taking time, stalking Roberts for a big right hand and covering, but Jake gets a foot on the ropes. Dino back in, pummeling Jake and hitting a piledriver, but Roberts gets a foot on the rope again.

Bravo with a slam, missing multiple elbow drops and Roberts finally tags Hacksaw. Duggan with big rights, whip into the corner and a back body drop. He drives Dino into the top turnbuckle, climbs the 2nd rope and reigns down fists. He whips Bravo across, drops him with a clothesline and goes into the 3 Point Stance. Frenchy Martin grabs his foot, Duggan turns around and Dino with a knee to the back that sends Hacksaw to the floor. Bravo gives chase, slamming Duggan on the floor and rolling back inside. Duggan’s had enough, going for the 2×4 and unloading on Dino in the ring and getting himself disqualified. ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan has been eliminated.

Jake’s left all alone now, dropping knees on Dino and covering for 2. Bravo tags out to Hennig, Perfect stops and huddles with the rest of his team before locking-up with Roberts. Perfect backs Jake into the corner, The Snake with right hands and a clothesline. Jake calls for the DDT, Hennig getting advice from the corner again. They lock knuckles, The Snake with more big rights and a kneelift, Perfect tagging out to Dino. They lock hands in a test of strength, Bravo taking Roberts down to his knees. Jake fights up, boots to the gut and a DDT attempt, but Dino flips his out, then misses an elbow drop. Rude tags in and The Snake rolls outside to take a breather.

Back in the ring, Rude to the eyes and he drives Roberts head-first into the turnbuckle. Right hands from The Ravishing One, Dino with a shot from the apron and Rude with a gutbuster. He slaps The Snake around, simply toying with him as he keeps the advantage. Hard whip into the corner, followed by another to Roberts and he drops to the canvas. Rude with a slam, locking the hands in a bearhug, then a snapmare and Rude comes off the top with a fist drop. The Ravishing One grinds over The Snake to rub it in, goes for a tag and Roberts pulls his pants down.

Rude turns around, The Snake plants him with a DDT and picks up the pinfall. ‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude has been eliminated. The Giant steps in during the 3 count, grabbing Jake from behind and unloading the heavy artillery. He backs The Snake into the corner and viciously chokes the life out of him. Andre doesn’t break and the ref disqualifies him, the damage already being done. Andre The Giant has been eliminated. Andre with a headbutt for good measure before he leaves the ring, Perfect walks right in and covers for the 1-2-3.
Winners & Survivors: ‘Mr. Perfect’ Curt Hennig & Dino Bravo

  • After The Bell: Hennig & Dino celebrate in the ring, Roberts is seen reaching for Damien and sliding him into the ring. Jake chases them off from ringside and Andre moves real quick to get away from Damien.
  • EA’s TakeMore enjoyable then the 10 man tag, but not as well paced as the opening contest. Not much of a team for The Snake here, Scott Casey is nothing more than a jobber and this is his only notable appearance with the WWF. Tito is still toiling away after his tag partner Rick Martel was kayfabe-injured and Ken Patera’s best days are far behind him. For Andre’s team, Harley Race was nearing the end of his run, but Curt Hennig would return to the WWF after being the AWA Champion. His ‘Perfect’ gimmick and amazing in-ring abilities would make him a future WWE Hall Of Famer. This would serve as the ‘finale’ of Jake’s feud with Rick Rude, although it had been pushed to the backburner in favor of Andre/Roberts.

Backstage: ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund welcomes The Twin Towers and their partners in tonight’s main event. Slick & Bobby Heenan have come up with a brilliant plan for domination tonight. Ted DiBiase wants Hercules to realize his place tonight, as his slave. Heenan shows proper respect to King Haku, stating that everyone else will tonight as well. Big Boss Man vows to cross with Hogan again and leave him laying like the dog he is.

Match #4 Survivor Series Elimination Match: Akeem, The Red Rooster, King Haku, ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase & Big Boss Man w/Slick, Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan & Virgil vs. WWF Champion ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage, Koko B. Ware, Hillbilly Jim, Hercules & Hulk Hogan w/Elizabeth & Frankie
Savage will start us off with DiBiase, Savage with a side headlock, pushed into the ropes and he scores a shoulder knockdown. Back in, DiBiase levels Macho with a clothesline, then fires away in the corner. Whip across, Savage reverses, but DiBiase doubles him back and follows into the corner, the champion side-stepping and unloading lefts and rights. Irish whip, Macho with a clothesline and then a tag to Hercules, MDM tags The Rooster and bails. Herc gives chase around ringside, then back in the ring and Rooster catches him coming in.

Rooster with a jawbreaker, looks for a sharpshooter and Hercules with a big right hand. Rooster maintains control, sending Herc into the ropes for a hiptoss, but he can’t power the big man over and eats a fist. Koko tags in, sends Rooster in the corner and follows him in, running into a boot. Akeem off the tag, clubbing Koko and bringing in Haku for a knife-edge chop and a slam. Koko avoids a leg drop, making a tag back to Herc and he exchanges shots with The King. The Mighty One wins the exchange, Hulk comes in and flattens Haku with a clothesline, then drops a couple elbows and rakes the eyes. Hillbilly in now, double big boot and he covers Haku for a count of 2.

The King sneaks in a shot to the throat, tag back to Akeem who keeps the advantage and tags The Rooster. He tries to slam Hillbilly, can’t get him up and gets slammed himself, then takes a boot to the midsection. Koko tags, irish whip and he connects with a powerslam for 2. Rooster goes to the eyes, rams Koko into the top turnbuckle to no affect. Koko turns the tables, Rooster reversing an irish whip across and The Birdman to the 2nd rope with a fake-out, then to the top for a dropkick and a near fall. Hulkster tagging, big boot for The Rooster, Hogan tags Savage and slams Rooster. Macho to the top, lands the elbow drop and gets the 3 count. The Red Rooster has been eliminated.

Everybody rushes in the ring now, The Twin Towers squad ducking out of the ring and The Mega Powers team celebrates in the ring. Order is restored, Haku entering the match and backing Macho into the ropes, Hogan with a blind tag and he exchanges with The King. Haku gets the better of it, irish whip and a dropkick for Hulk. Hogan reverses a whip into the corner, follows in with a clothesline and hits a slam before tagging Hercules. The Mighty Herc with an elbow drop, gets a count of 2 and goes to a standing side headlock, Haku countering with a back suplex. Akeem off the tag, lowering the boomm on Hercules, slamming him to the mat and missing an elbow.

Herc tags Hillbilly, right hands for Akeem and a whip into the turnbuckle that gets reversed. Akeem charges in, Hillbilly with a headscissor and a kick to the head, sending The African Dream in for a big boot that doesn’t take the big man down. Hillbilly unwisely attempts a bearhug, Akeem pushing him to the corner and squashing him. Hillbilly reverses a whip across, Akeem rebounding out of the corner with a clothesline and then hits the 747 Splash for the elimination. Hillbilly Jim has been eliminated. While Akeem celebrates, Koko hits a dropkick from behind, tag to Hogan and he drives The African Dream into the turnbuckles.

Macho off the tag, top rope double axe handle and running elbows. Herc in now, rights and lefts and Akeem still on his feet. More heavy shots from Hercules, irish whip and a back elbow. Koko back in, right jabs and a dropkick that sends Akeem into the corner. The African Dream side-steps a splash and tags Boss Man. He sends Koko into the ropes, plants him with a Boss Man Slam and that’s it for Koko. Koko B. Ware has been eliminated. Hulkster enters the ring, collar & elbow tie-up and Boss Man goes to the eyes. Hogan firing back with big right hands, clothesline out of the ropes and Boss Man is reeling.

Hulk with an atomic drop, plays back and forth with Macho & Hercules, then sends Boss Man into the corner and follows in with a clothesline. Into the ropes, Hogan with a big boot and he motions for a slam. Hulk plants Boss Man, hits the ropes and collides shoulders, into the ropes again and Boss Man connects with a spinebuster. Akeem tagging in, double back elbow and then a tag to Haku. Big shots from The King for a 2 count, Boss Man back in and he uses his weight to the back of Hogan, then gets choked on the apron. DiBiase in now, more punches to the Hulkster and a clothesline, MDM following with multiple fist drops for a near fall. Hogan hulks up, atomic drop to DiBiase and a tag to Hercules.

The Mighty Herc with lefts and rights, irish whip into the corner and a back body drop off the rebound. He whips DiBiase in for a shot to the midsection, kneelift and then multiple clotheslines. Herc hits the ropes, Virgil with a trip from the outside and Hercules grabs him. DiBiase from behind off the distraction, school boy and he gets the 1-2-3. Hercules has been eliminated. Hercules levels Virgil on the outside, Savage hops in from behind with a quick roll-up on DiBiase and he gets the pinfall. ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase has been eliminated.

Haku enters the squared circle, going to the midsection and sending the champion in for a knife-edge chop. Savage rolls away from a diving headbutt, kicks to The King and he hangs onto the ropes after an irish whip, quickly tagging Hogan and taking Haku out at the knee. Hulk with chops, sends Haku in for a back body drop and he eats a kick. The King with a superkick, tag to Boss Man and he hammers the lower back of the Hulkster. Body slam to Hogan for a 2 count, Akeem into the match and he pummels Hulk to the mat before bringing Haku back in. The King with a vertical suplex for 2, then goes to a nerve hold to wear out the Hulkster.

The ref checks the arm, Hogan keeps it up on the 3rd try and tries to fight out of the hold, Haku going to the eyes and tagging Boss Man. He sends Hogan into the ropes, plants him with a Boss Man Slam, but doesn’t go for the cover. He climbs to the top rope, goes for a splash and Hogan rolls out of the way. Hulk crawls to make a tag, Savage unloads on everyone, hits the ropes and Slick with a trip behind the ref’s back. Boss Man takes the advantage, grabbing Macho in a bearhug as Slick berates Elizabeth and tries to drag her to the back. Hogan sees it, drilling Slick with a right hand before Akeem & Boss Man are out to make the save. They drag Hulk back to the ring, Slick pulling out handcuffs and they cuff Hogan to the bottom rope.

The ref informs Boss Man he’s been counted out. Big Boss Man has been eliminated. Haku chokes the champion in the ring, Boss Man grabbing his nightstick outside and unloading on a helpless Hulkster. Akeem tagging in, goes to help Boss Man with the assault on Hogan and Macho with a burst of energy, ambushing The African Dream from behind. Boss Man sees it, hops to the apron and whacks Savage with the nightstick. Boss Man choking Macho on the mat, Akeem shoves the referee and hits a 747 Splash on the champion. Haku working over Hogan on the outside as the referee disqualifies Akeem. Akeem has been eliminated.

Haku is the last one left for his team, The Mega Powers in bad shape at this point. The King with a back elbow out of the ropes, covers and Savage kicks out at 2. Haku with a slam, tries an elbow drop and misses, but Savage has nobody to tag with Hulk handcuffed on the outside. Slick taunts Hogan with the handcuff keys outside, Haku missing a dropkick in the ring and again Macho crawls to his corner. Elizabeth gets the attention of the referees wanting to get Hogan loose, Slick to the apron holding Savage, Macho ducks a superkick and Slick falls to the floor. Hogan drills Heenan for good measure, Haku with an inverted atomic drop as Elizabeth gets the keys from Slick and unlocks Hogan.

Hulkster finally returns to his corner, The King to the top rope and he connects with a splash for a near fall. Haku with an ill-advised superkick, knocking Macho backwards into his corner and Hulk makes the hot tag. Right hands to The King, irish whip and a big boot, Hogan with a slam and the leg drop for the win.
Winners & Sole Survivors: The Mega Powers

  • After The Bell: Hogan poses for the crowd as Elizabeth tends to Macho Man. She tries to get Hulk’s help, but he grabs her in celebration. Elizabeth raises The hands of The Mega Powers as Macho looks a bit puzzled to end the night.
  • EA’s TakeAlthough this match was a tad long, the pacing was pretty good and the crowd was electric for The Mega Powers/Twin Towers clash. Akeem’s tranformation from the One Man Gang is often thought to be a shot at Dusty Rhodes, as Akeem ‘The African Dream’ was also a “jive talking, soul man” in the same mold of Dusty, or at least he tried to be. Boss Man isn’t very polished in the ring yet and most of his offense consists of punches. Koko, Hillbilly & Hercules were just filler-type partners that were only there to give the appearance of the odds being stacked against Hogan/Savage after they were all eliminated. The seeds have been planted for a Mega Powers split and as we will see with Royal Rumble 1989, the cracks would only grow wider.

EA’s FinisherA fairly entertaining pay-per-view that involved almost the entire roster, but the Survivor Series concept still needs tweaking. The 10 team match is still a cluster with too many bodies on the apron and the double switch from Demolition & The Powers Of Pain makes little sense. Why would Fuji leave his team that is already the champions? Plus, Demolition was already hated and The Powers Of Pain were over as faces, as evidence by the pop they got when they joined Mr. Fuji in what was supposed to be their heel turn. The Ultimate Warrior train keeps building speed and momentum, his career would continue to ascend into the next year as his push grows and grows. The Mega Powers get the last laugh over The Twin Towers to end the night, all while showing us a glimpse of what would be ahead for the main event duo.

Top Three To Watch

Roman Reigns WWE Clash At The Castle 2022

With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!

We are a few weeks away from WWE Clash In Italy PLE, which airs on May 31st. Chris King has gone back to look at the 2022 Clash At The Castle PLE and the matches with the most important future implications.

Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky

All six superstars started the match in front of this wild UK crowd. The babyfaces took advantage early with a triple suplex, and Bianca Bel-Air hit her patented springboard moonsault and covered Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai for a near fall. Alexa Bliss and Sky got the match going with some fast-paced offense. Bliss hit their Glitz Flip, and Sky tagged in the leader of Damage Control. Despite the crowd chanting for Bayley, “I wanna know, will you be my girl?” the methodical heel would purposely tag out for most of this match.

Bliss hit a beautiful sunset flip powerbomb and covered Sky, but Kai was the legal participant, so she ate a huge kick. Asuka and Sky now went toe-to-toe with some incredibly fast-paced action (I can’t wait to watch their match at Backlash); these two have insane chemistry. The crowd wanted the Raw Women’s Champion and Bayley tagged in. The EST is showcasing her raw power over all of Damage Control. The babyfaces looked to rally after a superplex off of Belair’s back. The heels took advantage of the numbers game; Kai hit her signature Kaio Kick, Bayley delivered Rose Plant, and Sky hit her picture-perfect moonsault. Bayley got the huge victory for Damage Control!

  • This was a breakout performance for the new dangerous trio “Damage Control.” Bayley was such a genius changing the theme music so the crowd couldn’t sing it. That’s Heel 101. Bayley tagging out and not giving the UK crowd what they wanted was brilliant.
  • Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky would run roughshod on SmackDown for the entire year with some amazing performances, including headlining WarGames. The Damage Control storyline would continue through the next two years, and Bayley would ultimately win the Women’s

Championship from Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40.

Gunther VS. Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)

Ludwig Kaiser introduced Giovanni Vinci, bringing back together Imperium as ‘The Ring General’ made his way down to the ring. The bell rang, and the punishment began as Sheamus’s chest was already red. Gunter chopped ‘The Celtic Warrior’ right off the turnbuckle to the outside. The challenger was writhing in pain as Gunther locked in a Boston Crab.

Sheamus was fighting for his life to become a grand-slam champion here, taking all of the champions’ brutality. Gunther delivered a nasty bodyslam to Sheamus on the outside. The Celtic Warrior was finally able to deliver The 10 Beats of the Bodhran for a count of twelve.

Midway through the match, both the champion and the challenger got into a slugfest, and Sheamus hit a loud knee strike for a two-count! Sheamus delivered White Noise for another near-fall. The entire UK crowd was on their feet as the Brogue Kick was countered;

Gunther hit his patented dropkick into the corner. Sheamus lifted Gunther up for the Celtic Cross from the turnbuckle for a count of 2.99! The Celtic Warrior tried to go for the brogue kick, but his back gave out. The Intercontinental Champion delivered a powerbomb followed by a colossal lariat to retain his prestigious title.

Sheamus got a standing ovation from the raucous UK crowd despite his loss. He may not have won the intercontinental title, but he won their respect!

  • Both Brutes stood in the middle of the ring, staring at each other without throwing a punch as their faction members fought to solidify a singles match with no interference. That was so brilliant and creative to see. As soon as the match got underway, both superstars beat the holy hell of each other for 20+ minutes.
  • ‘The Ring General’ would have the longest reign of 666 days in WWE history as Intercontinental Champion, defeating the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable. He would eventually lose to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, but Gunther has the bar so high with such an amazing reign.

Edge & Rey Mysterio VS. The Judgement Day

Finn Balor and Rey Mysterio started the tag team match with some hard chops in the corner. Mysterio bounced back with some head-scissors takedown, and Damien Priest tagged in and clocked Edge with a nasty right hand. ‘The Rated-R Superstar was all fired up with some quick offense, sending Mysterio onto both JD members on the outside.

Priest and Balor utilized the numbers game to take out their opponents with a leg drop and some double-team maneuvers. Mysterio had taken a lot of punishment and wanted to make the tag to Edge, but Priest prevented the tag with a big boot.

The former leader of the JD came in firing on all cylinders, hitting some clotheslines and nailing Balor with an Edgecution. The UK crowd was going wild for Edge as he delivered his tag-partner’s signature 619, followed by a splash from Mysterio for a near-fall.

Edge intercepted a chokeslam attempt on Mysterio with a spear to the outside! Dominik interfered to help his dad hit a sunset flip powerbomb, and Rhea Ripley made him pay. Mysterio and Edge ensured the victory with a 619 and a picture-perfect Spear!

Following the match, Dominik would low-blow Edge and take his father’s head off with a wicked clothesline. This was the last time he was side-by-side with his father for the foreseeable future in WWE.

  • Edge was trying to get comeuppance on the faction he helped create and was kicked out of. The Judgment Day had been targeting and terrorizing Rey’s son Dominik for months now, who was at ringside. ‘The Rated-R Superstar would ultimately get his revenge on JD at WrestleMania 39, when he faced “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell.
  • This was the birth of Dirty Dom, after being jealous of his dad choosing Edge as his tag partner instead of him. After the match, Dominik gave Edge a low blow and clotheslined his dad’s head off to a loud cheer from

the crowd. His heel turn has been the greatest creative decision in his young career.

  • Dirty Dom is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time NXT North American Champion, and current AAA Mega Champion during his time in The Judgment Day, and he’s one step away from becoming world heavyweight champion.

Roman Reigns VS. Drew McIntrye (WWE Undisputed Universal Championship)

The always overconfident and arrogant undisputed champion and his challenger locked up with the power of one-upmanship. Reigns had been trash-talking his opponent, and McIntyre made his rival back away. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion looks shook because of this insane UK crowd.

The champion answered back with some heavy right hands to his challenger. Reigns looks scared as McIntrye has his way with the champion. Karrion Kross and Scarlet provided a distraction, which allowed Reigns to take advantage. The confident champion now is slowing down the match with explosive, powerful offense like we’ve seen throughout his title reign thus far.

Reigns delivered a big boot, and his challenger kicked out at one! The champion mocked and trash-talked McIntrye and delivered some nasty punches. Both superstars tried to deliver suplexes to each other but to no avail. Reigns then grabbed the mic for Cardiff to acknowledge their Tribal Chief, and The Scottish Warrior hit a Glasgow Kiss to the champion. McIntyre fired up and delivered his patented belly-to-belly throws. The challenger wanted a Claymore Kick as Reigns left the ring. A spinebuster into a jackknife pinfall gave McIntrye a near-fall.

The champion intercepted a Claymore Kick with a devastating Superman Punch for a two-count. The champion locked in the guillotine choke hold in an attempt to get McIntrye to submit. The challenger speared the champion through the barricade. Reigns again intercepted a Claymore Kick with another spear for a 2.99!

McIntyre clocked Reigns with a Claymore Kick to the back of the head and into the referee, Charles Robinson. Austin Theory then made an attempt to cash in his MITB, but Tyson Fury knocked his lights out from the crowd. Back in the ring, the champion has a chair and ate a Claymore Kick for yet another near-fall!

A slugfest ensued between both superstars, followed by a blitz of offense, a headbutt, a spear by the challenger, and a Claymore Kick. McIntyre was one second away from being WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out before the three-count. Reigns capitalized and delivered a massive spear for the victory!

  • ‘The Scottish Warrior’ Drew McIntrye made an amazing entrance, which was highlighted by a storybook video package with his Broken Dreams theme song! The raucous crowd was red-hot for the biggest match of McIntyre’s career since his breakout year in 2020, which was thwarted by Covid. The UK crowd was chanting, “Oh, Drew McIntyre,” before the champion made his entrance.
  • Roman Reigns always looks like a million bucks during his elaborate entrance; this time he was all alone. ‘The Tribal Chief’ had his most difficult title defense to date. Drew McIntyre has always been a thorn in Reigns’ side, ever since returning to WWE in 2018. Reigns went on to have a history-making 1,316-day title reign until Cody Rhodes defeated him at WrestleMania 40. The Tribal Chief won this year’s Royal Rumble and won the World Championship from CM Punk in a five-star classic.
  • Solo Sikoa made his shocking debut when McIntrye delivered a Claymore Kick and pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. The Scottish Warrior has not had the same amount of momentum since the PLE. Yes, he won the world title for about four minutes and was the WWE Undisputed Champion for a month this year, but still, he hasn’t felt like a dangerous threat. Since Sikoa’s debut on the main roster, he’s been the silent enforcer for The Bloodline, the Tribal Chief, and now the leader of the MFTs. He has portrayed a menacing and funny heel at times, and I could see him becoming WWE or World Heavyweight Champion by next year.

Edge Randy Orton WWE Backlash 2020 Greatest Wrestling Match Ever

Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!

Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.

‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.

The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.

Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.

In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.

The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.

The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!

Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!
