Backstage: Joining ‘Mean’ Gene in the locker room is Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake, celebrating a big win for Hulk Hogan. The champion talks about Brutus and himself surviving tonight and it will be the same when they enter the cage against Zeus & Savage. Beefcake knows Zeus is out of control, Queen Sherri walks in, screaming about their cage match. She tosses powder in Hogan & Beefcake’s eyes, Savage & Zeus enter the room and lay them out as other wrestlers try to break up the melee.
Backstage: Now with Sean Mooney is The Rude Brood, Rick Rude talking about celebrating turkey day. Mr. Perfectsays tonight will be no different than any other day of his life, perfect. Snuka had better keep his eye on him because he’s got something up his sleeve. The Rougeaus mock The Bushwhackers before predicting victory.
Backstage: Gene Okerlund is still in the locker room area for a word with Roddy’s Rowdies. The Bushwhackers are trying to sneak out to the ring with turkeys, Piper telling them no dinner until after the match.
Match #4 Survivor Series Elimination Match: The Rude Brood (Mr. Perfect, The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers (Jacques & Raymond) & ‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude) w/The Genius & ‘Mouth Of The South’ Jimmy Hart vs. Roddy’s Rowdies (‘Superfly’ Jimmy Snuka, The Bushwhackers (Luke & Butch) & ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper)
Perfect & Luke get us underway, The Perfect jumps Luke from behind, slams him and misses an elbow drop. Luke quickly crawls over and tags Butch, he comes in and bites Perfect’s leg, then brings in Hot Rod and he bites at the arm. Superfly tags in for more of the same, Butch comes in to gnaw on Perfect some more, tag back to Snuka as Jacques enters the match.
Jacques shows off some of his athleticism, flipping into the ring and hitting a kip-up. They circle around, Jacques goes to the ribs with a boot, Snuka reverses a whip into the ropes, ducks his head and Jacques flips over him. Superfly hits the ropes for a flying headbutt, shoots Jacques back in and lays him out with a double chop. Snuka splits Jacques with a backbreaker, slams him and then heads up to the top for the Superfly Splash and a 3 count. Jacques Rougeau has been eliminated. Rude jumps right in and ambushes Snuka, Superfly fires back with overhead chops, The Ravishing One reverses a whip into the ropes, leapfrogs over and does some premature celebrating.
Snuka drops him with a headbutt, Perfect tags himself in and grabs a side headlock, Superfly pushes him off into the ropes, Rude pulls them down as he pulls himself up on the apron and Perfect spills to the outside. Perfect is in Rude’s face on the apron, Superfly grabs them for a double noggin knocker and The Perfect One falls back into the ring, Snuka tagging out to Piper. Roddy lays in a knee lift, drives Perfect into the top turnbuckle and drops him with a right hand. Luke gets the tag, snapmares Perfect over and lands a knee drop before bringing in Butch. He delivers a couple of right hands to the breadbasket, Superfly back in for a kick to Perfect’s ribs, Luke re-enters and bites Perfect again.
Butch in with right hands, shoots Perfect into the ropes, ducks his head and eats a kick. The Perfect One can’t take advantage, Roddy tags in for an atomic drop that sends Perfect to his corner where Raymond enters the match. They exchange shots in the middle of the ring, Hot Rod sets for a piledriver, Raymond flips him over and Piper goes into a sunset flip for a count of 2. Raymond with rights and chops, shoots Roddy into the corner and drops him with a savat kick off the rebound, gaining a 2 count of his own. He whips Piper into the ropes, ducks his head, Hot Rod hits the piledriver this time, covers and gets the elimination. Raymond Rougeau has been eliminated.
Perfect takes the ring, unleashes right hands on Hot Rod, Piper goes to the eyes, looks for a slam and The Perfect One gets a small package for a 2 count. He snapmares Roddy over, flips over with a neck snap and gets another 2, then wrenches more at Roddy’s neck. Perfect gets Piper in a front facelock, preventing him from tagging, Hot Rod with a double leg takedown, slingshots Perfect into the turnbuckle and crawls to tag Butch. He hits the ring, drops a fist for a near fall, then boots to the head for another 2. Luke off the tag now, Perfect reverses a whip into the ropes, sticks a boot to the face and Luke falls backwards, tagging out to Piper.
Hot Rod with a flurry of lefts and rights, mocks Rude and lays Perfect out with a stiff right hand. Butch back in, shoots Perfect sternum-first into the corner, bites him on the backside and waves to the crowd. Perfect from behind with a roll-up, the ref drops down and makes the 3 count. Butch has been eliminated. Hot Rod hops in the ring, goes into the same roll-up from behind and gets a near fall, then tags Snuka. Superfly drops an overhand chop from the 2nd rope, lays Perfect out with a knife-edge, tag to Luke and he delivers a headbutt to the midsection for a 2 count.
Perfect sneaks in a big right hand, finally reaches Rude who heads upstairs, but gets caught with a right to the ribs jumping down. Luke faceplants The Ravishing One into the canvas, bites him on the forehead and whips him into the ropes, ducking his head for a back body drop. Rude leapfrogs over, delivers a kick to the breadbasket and connects with the Rude Awakening for the pinfall. Luke has been eliminated. Rude immediately tags out to Perfect as Snuka comes in, The Perfect One drops him with a knee lift, sends Snuka into a Rude knee in the corner before tagging out.
The Ravishing One with a shot to the throat, taunts Piper on the apron and drives Superfly into Perfect’s boot, then tags out. Perfect drops Hot Rod on the apron, chokes Superfly behind the ref’s back, then goads Roddy into the ring, allowing Rude to work Snuka over in the corner. Perfect shoots Snuka into the ropes for a dropkick that gets a count of 2, sends him back in for a back body drop and Superfly sees it coming, delivering a kick. Snuka can’t take advantage and make the tag, The Ravishing One tags in and grabs Superfly in a chinlock. Snuka fights to a vertical base, Rude goes to the eyes and unloads on Superfly, Perfect back in for a slam that Snuka counters into a small package for a near fall.
The Perfect One is able to keep control, punishing Superfly with boots and right hands. Snuka fires back, hits the ropes for a flying headbutt, still unable to make the tag. Perfect with right hands that have little affect, Snuka with shots of his own, into the ropes they go and they collide heads and double down. Both men crawl to tags, Piper & Rude exchange right hands, Hot Rod gets the better of it, shoots Rude into the ropes and flips him with a back body drop. Roddy drops Perfect with a right hand on the apron, tackles The Ravishing One and they both fall out to the floor and fight down the aisleway. The referee counts them both out. ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper & ‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude has been eliminated.
It’s down to 1 on 1, The Perfect One driving Superfly into the top turnbuckle to little affect. He grabs a side headlock, Snuka pushes him off into the ropes and scores with a shoulder knockdown, back into the ropes Perfect comes back with a hip toss. He follows with an armdrag, then sends Snuka spilling to the outside with a dropkick. Perfect drags him up to the apron, brings him back in the ring with a vertical suplex and gains a count of 2. Superfly fights back with chops and right hands, grabs a side headlock of his own, Perfect pushes him into the ropes and again Snuka with a shoulder knockdown. Perfect forces Superfly into the ropes, grabs a roll-up for a near fall, Perfect bounces off the ropes from the kick-out, Snuka into a schoolboy and now he gains a 2 count.
Perfect switches the momentum gaining another 2 of his own, Snuka shoots him into the corner and charges in with a running chop. The Perfect One reverses a whip across, Superfly hops to the 2nd rope for a crossbody, Perfect again switches the momentum, grabs the tights and still only gets 2. Snuka shoots him into the ropes, ducks his head for a back body drop, Perfect counters into the PerfectPlex and he finishes it.
Winner & Sole Survivor: Mr. Perfect
- After The Bell: The Genius hops in the ring to celebrate with Perfect, Superfly comes from behind with a double noggin knocker, then sends him into the ropes for a double back chop. Snuka slams The Genius, scales the top turnbuckle for a Superfly Splash, Perfect pulling him out of the ring to make the save.
- EA’s Take: Mr. Perfect’s undefeated streak continues, as well as his ascent to Superstar status. The main feud for this was between Rude & Piper, but their rivalry was short-lived in the bigger picture and wouldn’t last past the Royal Rumble. This was all about Curt Hennig and advancing his push.
Backstage: Joining Sean Mooney is with The Rude Brood, celebrating Perfect’s win in the locker room. Mooney wonders where Bobby Heenan is, but The Ravishing One simply states it’s none of his business. Rude says he expected a lot of trouble from Roddy’s Rowdies, but they also expected victory.
Backstage: ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund is standing by with The Ultimate Warriors, Jim Neidhart hopes they don’t ruin The Heenan Family’s Thanksgiving. The Rockers are ready to do a whole lot of rock and rolling, coming all all their guns loaded. Warrior knows that The Heenan Family is not united right now and his team will deliver.
Match #5 Survivor Series Elimination Match: The Heenan Family (Andre The Giant, Haku, Arn Anderson & Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan) vs. The Ultimate Warriors (Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart, The Rockers (Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty) & WWF Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior)
The Heenan Family jumps Neidhart & The Rockers before Warrior makes his entrance, Andre & The Anvil are left in the ring, Warrior makes his way out as the bell rings. The Giant chokes Neidhart against the ropes, Warrior slides in the ring, delivers multiple clotheslines to Andre and dumps him over the top to the floor. Andre is out and the ref counts to 10. Andre The Giant has been eliminated.
Haku & Anderson hop on the apron, Warrior slingshots them both into the ring, then clubs away at Double A. He shoots Arn into his corner, Neidhart & The Rockers with right hands, Warrior follows with a boot and makes the tag to The Anvil. He sends Arn into the ropes for a back elbow, then whips him into the corner and spears Double A. Arn goes to the eyes, puts the boots to Neidhart’s knee and brings in Haku. The Anvil drops him with multiple shoulders, The Giant finally makes his exit and it irate, Neidhart into the ropes back in the ring, drops Double A off the apron and Haku takes advantage of the distraction.
The Anvil fires back, exchanging rights with Haku and coming up on the short end of it. The Enforcer tags in, pummels The Anvil in the corner, then distracts the ref, allowing The Brain to choke Neidhart in the corner. Haku back in, delivering more punishment to Neidhart, whips him into the ropes, Anderson hits the ring and gets dropped by The Anvil, Haku again taking advantage with a savat kick to the back of the head for the 1-2-3. Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart has been eliminated. Michaels takes the ring, firing away with right hands until Haku goes to the eyes.
He grabs a side headlock, Michaels pushes him into the ropes, Haku with a shoulder knockdown, back into the ropes, Shawn drops for a monkey flip and avoids a Haku headbutt.Quick tags between The Rockers, controlling Haku with wristlocks and taking turns dropping double axe handles on the shoulder. They go for a double clothesline, Haku ducks it, drops Michaels with one of his own and catches Jannetty going for a crossbody. Shawn dropkicks them down, Marty gaining a count of 2, Haku to the eyes once more and Anderson tags himself in. Marty sends him into the ropes, ducks for a back body drop and Double A clubs him in the back.
He hooks Jannetty for a suplex, Haku tags and they attempt a double team suplex. Michaels enters the ring, catches Marty and they deliver synchronized superkicks to Double A & Haku. Jannetty shoots Haku into the ropes for a jumping back elbow that gets 2, tag to Warrior, Haku raking the eyes. Warrior reverses a whip into the ropes, back body drop for Haku, then misses an elbow drop. The Enforcer back in, Warrior counters a wristlock into one of his own, tags out to Jannetty and he keeps the pressure on with an armbar, then back to a wristlock. Anderson takes Marty down, tags out to Haku and Jannetty grabs him in a side headlock.
Haku backs him into the corner, doesn’t break clean, Marty reverses a whip across, charges in and misses, going sternum-first into the turnbuckles. Heenan tags in for the first time, throws one shot, takes one to the breadbasket and immediately tags out. Haku in, Jannetty goes back to the side headlock, gets pushed off into the ropes and Double A drives a knee to the back from the apron. Haku follows up with a savat kick for a near fall, The Brain tags back in, drops a knee on Marty and gets the elimination. Marty Jannetty has been eliminated.
Double A comes back in as Warrior takes the ring, collar & elbow tie-up, Double A backs Warrior into the ropes and drives shoulders to the midsection. The Ultimate One reverses a whip into the ropes, locks The Enforcer in a bearhug and Arn goes to the eyes to break it. Haku tags and rushes in, Warrior traps him in the bearhug, then splits him with an inverted atomic drop. Michaels tags in and makes the cover for a count of 2, sends Haku into the ropes for a dropkick and gains another near fall. Haku goes to the throat to stop the momentum, tosses Shawn to the outside and Warrior comes around ringside to get him away from the wrong part of town, rolling Michaels back in the ring on the other side.
Haku throws more shots, tag to The Enforcer who taunts Warrior into the ring, Heenan doing damage in the corner with a choke. Anderson sends Michaels into the corner, Shawn climbs to the top rope, backflips over Double A and hits a drop toe hold, grinding his face into the mat. Arn tries to tag out in the wrong corner and pays for it, Warrior tags in and hits a double right hand with Michaels. Warrior shoots Anderson hard into the corner, tag back to Michaels, Warrior with a slam, then launches Shawn off the top into a splash for a near fall. Double A with a thumb to the eye, tag to Haku and he drives Shawn’s head into the top turnbuckle. Michaels reverses a whip into the corner, Haku comes off the 2nd rope with a crossbody and Shawn ducks it.
He heads upstairs, connects with a top rope crossbody and picks up the pinfall. Haku has been eliminated. The Enforcer comes in and ambushes Michaels after the pinfall, Heenan tags in and delivers right hands to Shawn, Warrior hits the ring after The Brain and the ref restores order. Heenan dumps Michaels to the outside, climbs to the top rope and then changes his mind. Shawn to the apron, drives a shoulder to Double A’s ribs, hits a sunset flip and gets a count of 2. Heenan & Arn argue in the corner, The Brain tags in and drives knees to the midsection. Shawn fights back, Heenan immediately tags out.
Michaels with a side headlock on Anderson, gets pushed into the ropes, Arn drops down and they collide heads, doubling down. They slowly get to their knees, exchange rights and lefts to their feet, Arn backs Michaels into the corner and doles out more left hands. He whips Shawn across, Michaels hops up and over, shoots Anderson back across and goes for a monkey flip. Double A counters into an inverted atomic drop, Michaels blocks it, hits the ropes and The Enforcer plants him with a Spinebuster for a count of 3. Shawn Michaels has been eliminated.
The IC Champion is all by his lonesome now, hits the ropes for multiple shoulder blocks to Double A, keeps running into the ropes and Anderson dumps him out to the floor. The Enforcer rolls out to get him, sends him back in the ring and tags out to Heenan. The Brain stomps at The Warrior which has no affect, Heenan quickly bails out and Arn comes back in to beat down the champion. Warrior grabs Anderson by the throat, but Arn drops down and delivers a headbutt to the breadbasket. The Brain instructs Double A to keep putting on the punishment, Warrior reverses a whip into the ropes and sends Arn into Heenan on the apron, knocking Bobby to the floor.
Warrior drops The Enforcer with a military press, follows with the splash and that’s it for Double A. Arn Anderson has been eliminated. The Brain gets to his feet on the outside, rolls into the ring and Warrior sneaks around behind Heenan. The Brain finally notices the champion behind him, tries to leave the ring to no avail. Warrior sends Heenan into the corner, turning him upside down, then shoots him across and The Brain falls to the outside. He tries to head for the locker room, Warrior goes out to get him, hits the ropes and lays out The Brain with a shoulder tackle, following with the splash for the win.
Winner & Sole Survivor: The Ultimate Warrior
- EA’s Take: It was refreshing to see a main event that didn’t involve Hulk Hogan, but there was never really a top notch feud going into the event to begin with. Warrior is clearly the next guy in the eyes of the company, as he’s being shot to the moon. This would “ultimately” (Get it?) be the finish of his feud with The Heenan Family, marking the beginning of the end for one of the company’s greatest stables. The Brain was never supposed to compete in this match, however Tully Blanchard failed a drug test the day of the show and was let go, thus ending his in-ring career. Double A would leave back for the NWA immediately following this match, while Andre would stick with Heenan, teaming up with Haku as The Colossal Connection.
EA’s Finisher: The transitional period that WWF was in really dilluted the card overall, as most of the rivalries that were ending didn’t have that same feel as any in years prior. For example, Zeus was absolutely horrible in the ring which vastly affected the rivalry with Hogan. He didn’t have that important challenger at the time and was in a state of flux, much like Zeus’ tag partners (that he needed because he couldn’t work a match). WWF continues to push younger guys like Mr. Perfect and Ultimate Warrior, while searching for future singles stars by testing the waters with them (splitting The Hart Foundation). Not to mention the fact that the concept of the Survivor Series with every match being the same is tiring, but wouldn’t be changed fully for a few more years. The 4 on 4 deal is much better than the 5 on 5 and it was a smart decision to eliminate the cluster that was the 10 team tag. Probably the best Survivor Series put on in it’s short-lived history, but there’s still lots of room for improvement.
Top Three To Watch
1 – The Ultimate Warriors vs. The Heenan Family
2 – The King’s Court vs. The 4x4s

Chris King Looks Back at WWE Clash In The Castle 2022
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
We are a few weeks away from WWE Clash In Italy PLE, which airs on May 31st. Chris King has gone back to look at the 2022 Clash At The Castle PLE and the matches with the most important future implications.
Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky
All six superstars started the match in front of this wild UK crowd. The babyfaces took advantage early with a triple suplex, and Bianca Bel-Air hit her patented springboard moonsault and covered Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai for a near fall. Alexa Bliss and Sky got the match going with some fast-paced offense. Bliss hit their Glitz Flip, and Sky tagged in the leader of Damage Control. Despite the crowd chanting for Bayley, “I wanna know, will you be my girl?” the methodical heel would purposely tag out for most of this match.
Bliss hit a beautiful sunset flip powerbomb and covered Sky, but Kai was the legal participant, so she ate a huge kick. Asuka and Sky now went toe-to-toe with some incredibly fast-paced action (I can’t wait to watch their match at Backlash); these two have insane chemistry. The crowd wanted the Raw Women’s Champion and Bayley tagged in. The EST is showcasing her raw power over all of Damage Control. The babyfaces looked to rally after a superplex off of Belair’s back. The heels took advantage of the numbers game; Kai hit her signature Kaio Kick, Bayley delivered Rose Plant, and Sky hit her picture-perfect moonsault. Bayley got the huge victory for Damage Control!
- This was a breakout performance for the new dangerous trio “Damage Control.” Bayley was such a genius changing the theme music so the crowd couldn’t sing it. That’s Heel 101. Bayley tagging out and not giving the UK crowd what they wanted was brilliant.
- Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky would run roughshod on SmackDown for the entire year with some amazing performances, including headlining WarGames. The Damage Control storyline would continue through the next two years, and Bayley would ultimately win the Women’s
Championship from Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40.
Gunther VS. Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)
Ludwig Kaiser introduced Giovanni Vinci, bringing back together Imperium as ‘The Ring General’ made his way down to the ring. The bell rang, and the punishment began as Sheamus’s chest was already red. Gunter chopped ‘The Celtic Warrior’ right off the turnbuckle to the outside. The challenger was writhing in pain as Gunther locked in a Boston Crab.
Sheamus was fighting for his life to become a grand-slam champion here, taking all of the champions’ brutality. Gunther delivered a nasty bodyslam to Sheamus on the outside. The Celtic Warrior was finally able to deliver The 10 Beats of the Bodhran for a count of twelve.
Midway through the match, both the champion and the challenger got into a slugfest, and Sheamus hit a loud knee strike for a two-count! Sheamus delivered White Noise for another near-fall. The entire UK crowd was on their feet as the Brogue Kick was countered;
Gunther hit his patented dropkick into the corner. Sheamus lifted Gunther up for the Celtic Cross from the turnbuckle for a count of 2.99! The Celtic Warrior tried to go for the brogue kick, but his back gave out. The Intercontinental Champion delivered a powerbomb followed by a colossal lariat to retain his prestigious title.
Sheamus got a standing ovation from the raucous UK crowd despite his loss. He may not have won the intercontinental title, but he won their respect!
- Both Brutes stood in the middle of the ring, staring at each other without throwing a punch as their faction members fought to solidify a singles match with no interference. That was so brilliant and creative to see. As soon as the match got underway, both superstars beat the holy hell of each other for 20+ minutes.
- ‘The Ring General’ would have the longest reign of 666 days in WWE history as Intercontinental Champion, defeating the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable. He would eventually lose to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, but Gunther has the bar so high with such an amazing reign.
Edge & Rey Mysterio VS. The Judgement Day
Finn Balor and Rey Mysterio started the tag team match with some hard chops in the corner. Mysterio bounced back with some head-scissors takedown, and Damien Priest tagged in and clocked Edge with a nasty right hand. ‘The Rated-R Superstar was all fired up with some quick offense, sending Mysterio onto both JD members on the outside.
Priest and Balor utilized the numbers game to take out their opponents with a leg drop and some double-team maneuvers. Mysterio had taken a lot of punishment and wanted to make the tag to Edge, but Priest prevented the tag with a big boot.
The former leader of the JD came in firing on all cylinders, hitting some clotheslines and nailing Balor with an Edgecution. The UK crowd was going wild for Edge as he delivered his tag-partner’s signature 619, followed by a splash from Mysterio for a near-fall.
Edge intercepted a chokeslam attempt on Mysterio with a spear to the outside! Dominik interfered to help his dad hit a sunset flip powerbomb, and Rhea Ripley made him pay. Mysterio and Edge ensured the victory with a 619 and a picture-perfect Spear!
Following the match, Dominik would low-blow Edge and take his father’s head off with a wicked clothesline. This was the last time he was side-by-side with his father for the foreseeable future in WWE.
- Edge was trying to get comeuppance on the faction he helped create and was kicked out of. The Judgment Day had been targeting and terrorizing Rey’s son Dominik for months now, who was at ringside. ‘The Rated-R Superstar would ultimately get his revenge on JD at WrestleMania 39, when he faced “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell.
- This was the birth of Dirty Dom, after being jealous of his dad choosing Edge as his tag partner instead of him. After the match, Dominik gave Edge a low blow and clotheslined his dad’s head off to a loud cheer from
the crowd. His heel turn has been the greatest creative decision in his young career.
- Dirty Dom is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time NXT North American Champion, and current AAA Mega Champion during his time in The Judgment Day, and he’s one step away from becoming world heavyweight champion.
Roman Reigns VS. Drew McIntrye (WWE Undisputed Universal Championship)
The always overconfident and arrogant undisputed champion and his challenger locked up with the power of one-upmanship. Reigns had been trash-talking his opponent, and McIntyre made his rival back away. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion looks shook because of this insane UK crowd.
The champion answered back with some heavy right hands to his challenger. Reigns looks scared as McIntrye has his way with the champion. Karrion Kross and Scarlet provided a distraction, which allowed Reigns to take advantage. The confident champion now is slowing down the match with explosive, powerful offense like we’ve seen throughout his title reign thus far.
Reigns delivered a big boot, and his challenger kicked out at one! The champion mocked and trash-talked McIntrye and delivered some nasty punches. Both superstars tried to deliver suplexes to each other but to no avail. Reigns then grabbed the mic for Cardiff to acknowledge their Tribal Chief, and The Scottish Warrior hit a Glasgow Kiss to the champion. McIntyre fired up and delivered his patented belly-to-belly throws. The challenger wanted a Claymore Kick as Reigns left the ring. A spinebuster into a jackknife pinfall gave McIntrye a near-fall.
The champion intercepted a Claymore Kick with a devastating Superman Punch for a two-count. The champion locked in the guillotine choke hold in an attempt to get McIntrye to submit. The challenger speared the champion through the barricade. Reigns again intercepted a Claymore Kick with another spear for a 2.99!
McIntyre clocked Reigns with a Claymore Kick to the back of the head and into the referee, Charles Robinson. Austin Theory then made an attempt to cash in his MITB, but Tyson Fury knocked his lights out from the crowd. Back in the ring, the champion has a chair and ate a Claymore Kick for yet another near-fall!
A slugfest ensued between both superstars, followed by a blitz of offense, a headbutt, a spear by the challenger, and a Claymore Kick. McIntyre was one second away from being WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out before the three-count. Reigns capitalized and delivered a massive spear for the victory!
- ‘The Scottish Warrior’ Drew McIntrye made an amazing entrance, which was highlighted by a storybook video package with his Broken Dreams theme song! The raucous crowd was red-hot for the biggest match of McIntyre’s career since his breakout year in 2020, which was thwarted by Covid. The UK crowd was chanting, “Oh, Drew McIntyre,” before the champion made his entrance.
- Roman Reigns always looks like a million bucks during his elaborate entrance; this time he was all alone. ‘The Tribal Chief’ had his most difficult title defense to date. Drew McIntyre has always been a thorn in Reigns’ side, ever since returning to WWE in 2018. Reigns went on to have a history-making 1,316-day title reign until Cody Rhodes defeated him at WrestleMania 40. The Tribal Chief won this year’s Royal Rumble and won the World Championship from CM Punk in a five-star classic.
- Solo Sikoa made his shocking debut when McIntrye delivered a Claymore Kick and pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. The Scottish Warrior has not had the same amount of momentum since the PLE. Yes, he won the world title for about four minutes and was the WWE Undisputed Champion for a month this year, but still, he hasn’t felt like a dangerous threat. Since Sikoa’s debut on the main roster, he’s been the silent enforcer for The Bloodline, the Tribal Chief, and now the leader of the MFTs. He has portrayed a menacing and funny heel at times, and I could see him becoming WWE or World Heavyweight Champion by next year.

Chris King Looks Back: Edge vs Randy Orton in the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.
‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.
The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.
Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.
In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.
The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.
The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!
Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!
