Chairshot Classics: WWF Survivor Series ’90 – The WWF Thanksgiving Night Tradition!
Backstage: Sean Mooney is in the interview area with The Hulkamaniacs, Hulk Hogan speaking about surviving the treacherous WWF waters for a number of years. He talks about assembling the best team of Hulkamaniacs he could find. Big Boss Man talks about being a survivor all his life, he wonders if Bobby Heenan can survive. Tugboat claims he’s like the battleship Missouri, Hacksaw vows to not let any of his teammates down. Hogan says they fight tonight for the men and women in the Middle East, offering their services to fight after they finish off The Natural Disasters.
Match #4 – Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match: The Natural Disasters (Earthquake, Dino Bravo, Haku & The Barbarian) w/’Mouth Of The South’ Jimmy Hart & Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan vs. The Hulkamaniacs (Tugboat, ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, Big Boss Man & Hulk Hogan)
Hacksaw gets the start for his squad against Haku, gets the “USA” chants going, collar & elbow and they exchange shots. Haku backs Duggan into the corner, whips him across, Hacksaw reverses and ducks to avoid Haku springing off the 2nd rope for a crossbody. Duggan with multiple clotheslines, shoots Haku into the ropes for a back elbow, whips him in once more for another clothesline, missing a follow-up elbow drop. Bravo gets the tag in, splits Hacksaw with an inverted atomic drop, then brings The Barbarian in.
He delivers a couple of chops, tag back to Haku who sends Duggan to the ropes for a back elbow, Hacksaw falls backwards and Boss Man tags himself into the match. Boss Man firing away with stiff right hands, Haku reverses a whip into the ropes and hits a dropkick for a count of 2. He attempts to shoot Boss Man into the ropes, it’s reversed and Haku gets planted with a Boss Man Slam for a 1-2-3. Haku has been eliminated. Boss Man goes after Dino on the apron, Barbarian enters the ring from behind and hammers away. Irish whip to the ropes, Boss Man reverses and nails a big boot, hits the ropes for momentum and drops Barbarian with a back elbow.
Heenan gets on the apron and Boss Man makes him pay with a right hand, turns and fires off a flurry to Barbarian. He sends him into the ropes for a hip toss, Barbarian blocks it and connects with a vertical suplex, slams Boss Man to the mat and misses a 2nd rope elbow drop. Hacksaw tags in, reverses a whip into the ropes, misses a right hand, but follows with a back body drop. Barbarian rolls to the corner and tags The Canadian Strongman, he connects with rights and tags Quake for a double clothesline. Earthquake drives Duggan into the turnbuckles, squashes him with his body weight, Hacksaw slips out for a slam attempt and can’t lift the 400 pounder.
Quake shoots Hacksaw into the ropes, Duggan ducks a right and delivers a forearm shot that staggers the big man. Hacksaw with another getting the same result, goes into the ropes once more and Jimmy Hart pulls the top rope, sending Duggan spilling to the floor. Hacksaw chases Hart around ringside, grabs his 2×4 and they slide into the ring. Duggan drives the 2×4 into the breadbasket of Earthquake, connects with another shot to the back and he’s disqualified. ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan has been eliminated. The Hulkster hits the ring and unloads with heavy rights, Dino and Barbarian come in and get served some as well, followed by consecutive slams. Hogan clears the ring and slams Earthquake, sends him to the corner and follows in with a clothesline.
He reigns down right hands from the 2nd rope, Quake powers his way out of the corner and plants Hulk with a powerslam. The Canadian Strongman back in for multiple elbow drops, has a quick word in the corner, looks to bring Hogan to his feet and is caught in a small package for the pinfall. Dino Bravo has been eliminated. Quake comes back in as Boss Man gets the tag, he buries fists to the midsection in the corner, Earthquake reverses a whip across, tries for the corner splash and Boss Man avoids it. He heads to the top rope for a crossbody, Quake catches him in the air, Hogan steps in and pushes them over, Boss Man falling on top for a near fall.
Big Boss Man hits the ropes for a shoulder block, it merely staggers Earthquake, Boss Man to the ropes again and Barbarian drives a knee to the kidneys from the apron. Quake with consecutive big elbow drops, hooks the leg and gets the elimination. Big Boss Man has been eliminated. Hulk jumps in after the 3 count, shoots Quake into the ropes for a big boot, drops Barbarian off the apron with a right, staggers Earthquake with a clothesline and tries another slam. Quake blocks it, then another and lands on top of Hogan. Earthquake looks for a splash, Hulkster rolls out of the way, crawls to tag Tugboat and he hits the ring with clubbing shots to Quake and Barbarian.
He whips Earthquake into the ropes for a shoulder tackle, hits another and Hogan drags Quake to the outside. Tugboat follows out and the brawl is on, Hulk getting sent spine-first into the ring post in the process, the referee’s count continues and neither man makes it in before a 10 count. Tugboat & Earthquake have been eliminated. We’re down to 1 on 1, Barbarian hops to the floor to take advantage of the situation, sending Hulk into the ring and pounding away at the lower back. He buries right hands into the breadbasket in the corner, spikes Hulk with a piledriver and gets a count of 2.
Irish whip into the ropes, both guys are thinking clothesline and they double down on the canvas. They struggle to their feet, Barbarian drops Hogan with a big boot, then scales the turnbuckle for a top rope clothesline and a near fall. Hogan with an authoritative kick-out and he’s Hulking Up, delivers heavy right hands, sends Barbarian in for the big boot and follows with the leg drop for the victory.
Winner & Sole Survivor: Hulk Hogan
- After The Bell: Bobby Heenan gets a little too close to Hogan and pays for it, getting tossed over the top rope for his troubles. The Hulkster with his signature poses for the crowd in celebration.
- EA’s Take: A little sloppy here, but not as much as our opening contest. Pretty predictable with Hogan being the only survivor and Warrior being the lone babyface to advance to tonight’s main event. Much of the rivalries for the participants in this contest were coming to a close, namely Hogan/Earthquake and Duggan/Bravo. Big Boss Man’s issues with The Heenan Family would continue on, but other than that it’s fresh starts for everyone else going into the new year.
In The Arena: ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund welcomes his guest ‘Macho King’ Randy Savage, asking him about being a spectator at this year’s Survivor Series. Savage calls himself the future WWF Champion, calling out Warrior for a title shot. Gene reminds him that he had Queen Sherri do his dirty work previously by insulting the champion, Macho bringing up Sherri slapping Warrior and getting no response for his challenges. Okerlund brings up Warrior searching for Savage on those occasions, but never finding him. Macho King says the champion was looking in the wrong places and after he proves he’s the best, he might just retire.
Match #5 – Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match: The Alliance (Nikolai Volkoff, Tito Santana & The Bushwhackers (Luke & Butch) vs. The Mercenaries (Sgt. Slaughter, Boris Zhukov & The Orient Express (Sato & Tanaka) w/General Adnan & Mr. Fuji
Zhukov & Butch lead the way here, Butch with lefts and rights to the breadbasket, backing Boris into his corner. Luke with a shot to the eyes from the apron, steps in and The Bushwhackers team up for a double clothesline. Santana gets the tag, Boris reverses an irish whip, ducks a clothesline and gets caught with the flying forearm for a quick 3 count. Boris Zhukov has been eliminated.
Sato ambushes Tito after the fall, hammering Santana into the canvas with chops and boots. Standing side kick from Sato, Tanaka gets the tag and looks for one of his own, Tito ducks out of the way and Sato gets clocked. Butch re-enters the match with a shoulder block for Sato, hits the ropes for another and follows with a clothesline. Luke steps in and they score with the Battering Ram to Sato, Butch makes the cover and Sato’s night is finished. Sato has been eliminated. Tanaka creeps up from behind, lays Butch out and attempts a follow-up headbutt, but misses. Tito tags and connects with the flying forearm, quickly covers and gets the 1-2-3. Tanaka has been eliminated.
Slaughter steps in and Volkoff immediately hops in and fires away, the ref forces him back out and he gets the tag anyways. He shoots Sarge into the ropes, delivers a boot to the midsection, a couple more kicks and Slaughter drops. Back into the ropes we go, Nikolai goes for the same kick to the ribs, Slaughter catches the foot and decapitates Volkoff with a clothesline. He follows with numerous elbow drops, sends Nikolai to the ropes and buries a back elbow to the midsection. Slaughter hammers Volkoff on the ropes, Nikolai tries to fight back, but Sarge goes to the eyes, then drives him skull-first into the turnbuckle.
Sarge in total control, continuing the punishment and scoring with a dropkick out of the irish whip, snapmares Nikolai over, drops another elbow and gets a count of 3. Nikolai Volkoff has been eliminated. Butch comes in with a flurry of shots to the ribs, hits the ropes for a forearm that staggers Slaughter, Luke hits the ring and they plant Sarge with a double slam. They level Slaughter with a double clothesline, Luke covers and only gets 2. Luke hits the ropes for a flying back elbow, ascends to the top rope for a splash and Slaughter gets the knees up, following with a gutbuster and a pinfall. Luke has been eliminated.
Butch attempts to avenge his partner, burying fists to the midsection, Sarge reverses a whip into the corner and Butch hits sternum-first. Slaughter lays him out with a clothesline, makes the cover and that’s it. Butch has been eliminated. It’s 1 on 1 now as Tito hits Slaughter with a dropkick to the back, shoots Sarge into the corner and flips him with a back body drop off the rebound. Santana to the top, scores with a crossbody for a near fall, whips him into the corner for a monkey flip, but Slaughter hangs onto the ropes. Sarge plants Tito with a swinging neckbreaker for a count of 2, Slaughter with a backbreaker and again only gets 2.
Tito fires up, Slaughter thwarts the momentum by going to the eyes, hits a delayed vertical suplex and Santana kicks out at 2. Sarge misses a knee drop, Tito to the side headlock, Slaughter pushes him off and the ref gets leveled. Slaughter keeps the pressure on Santana, shoots him into the ropes and Tito hits the flying forearm. Adnan hits the ring and drives his flagstaff into Tito’s back, Slaughter hooks in the Camel Clutch and the referee stops the match. The outside official saw the interference and Slaughter is disqualified.
Winner & Sole Survivor: Tito Santana
- EA’s Take: This is where tonight’s format seems to screw with the storylines a little bit. It makes no sense in any context of the storyline for Slaughter to lose to Tito here. Sarge was in the midst of a big push as the company’s top heel and seemed to only lose because another babyface was needed for the main event. Regardless, a lot of quick falls in this one involving a lot of the lower card talent. The deck is stacked against the babyfaces in the Grand Finale Match Of Survival At Survivor Series Where You Must Survive or whatever it is they’re calling it.
Backstage: Sean Mooney is in the locker room with all the heels in tonight’s Grand Finale. Rick Martel talks about his entire team surviving due to unity and teamwork. Ted DiBiase says that in addition to that, he’s given a lot of incentive money to his partners to get the job done tonight. He speaks about the bad blood between Hogan & Warrior, while Tito just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
In The Arena: ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund is standing by the giant egg which will crack tonight, finally revealing what’s inside after weeks of anticipation. The egg starts to the crack and someone in a giant turkey suit pops out. Okerlund wonders what is going on, the turkey reveals himself as The Gobbledy Gooker, drags Gene to the ring and they proceed to dance.
- EA’s Take: Good lord, this is just all sorts of bad and one of the most infamous moments in WWE history. It’s such a shame that a great worker like Hector Guerrero would only ever be known to WWF fans as The Gobbledy Gooker. The real backstory here is that ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair had been in discussions with Vince McMahon about jumping ship and was originally supposed to be revealed as what was inside the egg. When Flair ended up staying in WCW, another plan had to be put into place and thus, you get this disaster.
Backstage: Joining Sean Mooney is Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior & Tito Santana who have the odds against them in tonight’s Grand Finale. Hogan says they aren’t worried about the odds because they have millions of Hulkamaniacs watching their backs. Tito speaks about being here only to survive, while Warrior raves about walking with all their fans at their side.
Match #7 – Grand Finale Match Of Survival: ‘The Model’ Rick Martel, Power & Glory (Paul Roma & Hercules), The Warlord & ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase w/Virgil & Slick vs. Hulk Hogan, Tito Santana & WWF Champion The Ultimate Warrior
Warlord & Tito to kick us off, Warlord sends Santana into the ropes and is dropped right off the bat with a flying forearm, Tito covers and Warlord’s gone. The Warlord has been eliminated. Roma steps in and beats down Santana, shoots him into the ropes and plants him with a powerslam. DiBiase tags in, drops a knee and follows with a vertical suplex for a 2 count.
The MDM sends Tito into the ropes for a clothesline, Santana ducks and scores with one of his own, whips DiBiase into the corner and hits a back body drop off the rebound. He calls for the flying forearm, hits the ropes and MDM ducks it. DiBiase sends Santana back in, avoids a clothesline and drops Tito on the ropes with a hot shot for a count of 3. Tito Santana has been eliminated. The Hulkster takes the ring and DiBiase attempts to beg off to no avail, Hogan sends him into the corner and follows in with a clothesline.
Irish whip and Hulk looks for a back body drop, DiBiase sees it coming and connects with a kick before tagging out to Hercules. He hammers away at the lower back, lays Hogan out with a clothesline and makes the tag to Roma for a double axe from the top that gets 2. Roma keeps the pressure on with shots to the back, The Model gets the tag and continues to punish the kidney area. Hercules back in with the heavy artillery, works Hogan over in the corner and rams him head-first into the top turnbuckle. The MDM back in with a double axe from the 2nd rope, follows with a knee drop and gets a count of 2.
DiBiase with his patented fist drops for another count of 2, The Mighty Hercules comes in and unloads with lefts and right, then props Hulk on the top turnbuckle. Roma tags and they connect with the Power-Plex, Roma makes the cover and Hogan kicks at 2. Roma can’t believe it, Hulk gets to his feet and flattens him with a clothesline, covers and gets the 1-2-3. Paul Roma has been eliminated. The Model jumps The Hulkster after the 3 count, shoots him in for a back body drop, Hogan has it scouted and counters with a kick, tagging out to the champion.
Warrior with a flurry of kicks in the corner, sends Martel across and flips him with a back body drop, turning his attention to Herc & DiBiase on the apron. Martel tries to take advantage, but his punches are having no affect, the champion scoring with multiple slams and a facebuster. Hulk tags in and drops The Model with a big boot out of the ropes, clotheslines him out to the floor and Martel walks away, indicating he’s had enough as the referee counts to 10. ‘The Model’ Rick Martel has been eliminated.
DiBiase is hot at Martel for walking out, he locks up with Hogan, backs him into the corner and fires off lefts and rights. Hulk reverses a whip across, charges in with a corner clothesline and drops Hercules on the apron with a right hand. Hulkster lays The MDM out with the big boot, drops the big leg and picks up a 3 count. ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase has been eliminated. Hercules hits the ring and runs into a powerslam from The Hulkster, the champion tags and builds momentum with multiple clotheslines. He hits the ropes for a shoulder tackle, squashes Herc with the splash and gets the win.
Winners & Sole Survivors: Hulk Hogan & The Ultimate Warrior
- After The Bell: Warrior & Hogan get their hands on Slick and toss him over the top rope before exchanging signs of respect towards one another and celebrating to end the show.
- EA’s Take: As is the case with all WWF PPVs of this era, the babyfaces walk away with the big win to finish off the night. There wasn’t much need for the added match here, but I applaud that the company realized that Survivor Series format had been getting repetitive and unexciting. They just haven’t found the cure for it at this point.
EA’s Finisher: While it was a good effort in trying to make the Survivor Series format feel fresh, there’s still work to be done with it. 4 on 4 teams is a good concept, but with all the winners advancing to a ‘Grand Finale’ it really takes away from the unpredictability factor. Slaughter losing while undergoing a big push made no sense if it not for tonight’s format and inevitably we end with Hogan & Warrior celebrating in the ring. It’s still very hard to showcase talent in these big tag matches and often times it doesn’t seem like it should start or end a rivalry, but be a continuation of one. Additionally, you had the complete flop known as The Gobbledy Gooker. ‘Nuff said.
Top Three To Watch
1 – The Dream Team vs. The Million Dollar Team
2 – The Visionaries vs. The Vipers
3 – The Hulkamaniacs vs. The Natural Disasters

Chris King Looks Back at WWE Clash In The Castle 2022
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
We are a few weeks away from WWE Clash In Italy PLE, which airs on May 31st. Chris King has gone back to look at the 2022 Clash At The Castle PLE and the matches with the most important future implications.
Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky
All six superstars started the match in front of this wild UK crowd. The babyfaces took advantage early with a triple suplex, and Bianca Bel-Air hit her patented springboard moonsault and covered Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai for a near fall. Alexa Bliss and Sky got the match going with some fast-paced offense. Bliss hit their Glitz Flip, and Sky tagged in the leader of Damage Control. Despite the crowd chanting for Bayley, “I wanna know, will you be my girl?” the methodical heel would purposely tag out for most of this match.
Bliss hit a beautiful sunset flip powerbomb and covered Sky, but Kai was the legal participant, so she ate a huge kick. Asuka and Sky now went toe-to-toe with some incredibly fast-paced action (I can’t wait to watch their match at Backlash); these two have insane chemistry. The crowd wanted the Raw Women’s Champion and Bayley tagged in. The EST is showcasing her raw power over all of Damage Control. The babyfaces looked to rally after a superplex off of Belair’s back. The heels took advantage of the numbers game; Kai hit her signature Kaio Kick, Bayley delivered Rose Plant, and Sky hit her picture-perfect moonsault. Bayley got the huge victory for Damage Control!
- This was a breakout performance for the new dangerous trio “Damage Control.” Bayley was such a genius changing the theme music so the crowd couldn’t sing it. That’s Heel 101. Bayley tagging out and not giving the UK crowd what they wanted was brilliant.
- Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky would run roughshod on SmackDown for the entire year with some amazing performances, including headlining WarGames. The Damage Control storyline would continue through the next two years, and Bayley would ultimately win the Women’s
Championship from Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40.
Gunther VS. Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)
Ludwig Kaiser introduced Giovanni Vinci, bringing back together Imperium as ‘The Ring General’ made his way down to the ring. The bell rang, and the punishment began as Sheamus’s chest was already red. Gunter chopped ‘The Celtic Warrior’ right off the turnbuckle to the outside. The challenger was writhing in pain as Gunther locked in a Boston Crab.
Sheamus was fighting for his life to become a grand-slam champion here, taking all of the champions’ brutality. Gunther delivered a nasty bodyslam to Sheamus on the outside. The Celtic Warrior was finally able to deliver The 10 Beats of the Bodhran for a count of twelve.
Midway through the match, both the champion and the challenger got into a slugfest, and Sheamus hit a loud knee strike for a two-count! Sheamus delivered White Noise for another near-fall. The entire UK crowd was on their feet as the Brogue Kick was countered;
Gunther hit his patented dropkick into the corner. Sheamus lifted Gunther up for the Celtic Cross from the turnbuckle for a count of 2.99! The Celtic Warrior tried to go for the brogue kick, but his back gave out. The Intercontinental Champion delivered a powerbomb followed by a colossal lariat to retain his prestigious title.
Sheamus got a standing ovation from the raucous UK crowd despite his loss. He may not have won the intercontinental title, but he won their respect!
- Both Brutes stood in the middle of the ring, staring at each other without throwing a punch as their faction members fought to solidify a singles match with no interference. That was so brilliant and creative to see. As soon as the match got underway, both superstars beat the holy hell of each other for 20+ minutes.
- ‘The Ring General’ would have the longest reign of 666 days in WWE history as Intercontinental Champion, defeating the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable. He would eventually lose to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, but Gunther has the bar so high with such an amazing reign.
Edge & Rey Mysterio VS. The Judgement Day
Finn Balor and Rey Mysterio started the tag team match with some hard chops in the corner. Mysterio bounced back with some head-scissors takedown, and Damien Priest tagged in and clocked Edge with a nasty right hand. ‘The Rated-R Superstar was all fired up with some quick offense, sending Mysterio onto both JD members on the outside.
Priest and Balor utilized the numbers game to take out their opponents with a leg drop and some double-team maneuvers. Mysterio had taken a lot of punishment and wanted to make the tag to Edge, but Priest prevented the tag with a big boot.
The former leader of the JD came in firing on all cylinders, hitting some clotheslines and nailing Balor with an Edgecution. The UK crowd was going wild for Edge as he delivered his tag-partner’s signature 619, followed by a splash from Mysterio for a near-fall.
Edge intercepted a chokeslam attempt on Mysterio with a spear to the outside! Dominik interfered to help his dad hit a sunset flip powerbomb, and Rhea Ripley made him pay. Mysterio and Edge ensured the victory with a 619 and a picture-perfect Spear!
Following the match, Dominik would low-blow Edge and take his father’s head off with a wicked clothesline. This was the last time he was side-by-side with his father for the foreseeable future in WWE.
- Edge was trying to get comeuppance on the faction he helped create and was kicked out of. The Judgment Day had been targeting and terrorizing Rey’s son Dominik for months now, who was at ringside. ‘The Rated-R Superstar would ultimately get his revenge on JD at WrestleMania 39, when he faced “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell.
- This was the birth of Dirty Dom, after being jealous of his dad choosing Edge as his tag partner instead of him. After the match, Dominik gave Edge a low blow and clotheslined his dad’s head off to a loud cheer from
the crowd. His heel turn has been the greatest creative decision in his young career.
- Dirty Dom is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time NXT North American Champion, and current AAA Mega Champion during his time in The Judgment Day, and he’s one step away from becoming world heavyweight champion.
Roman Reigns VS. Drew McIntrye (WWE Undisputed Universal Championship)
The always overconfident and arrogant undisputed champion and his challenger locked up with the power of one-upmanship. Reigns had been trash-talking his opponent, and McIntyre made his rival back away. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion looks shook because of this insane UK crowd.
The champion answered back with some heavy right hands to his challenger. Reigns looks scared as McIntrye has his way with the champion. Karrion Kross and Scarlet provided a distraction, which allowed Reigns to take advantage. The confident champion now is slowing down the match with explosive, powerful offense like we’ve seen throughout his title reign thus far.
Reigns delivered a big boot, and his challenger kicked out at one! The champion mocked and trash-talked McIntrye and delivered some nasty punches. Both superstars tried to deliver suplexes to each other but to no avail. Reigns then grabbed the mic for Cardiff to acknowledge their Tribal Chief, and The Scottish Warrior hit a Glasgow Kiss to the champion. McIntyre fired up and delivered his patented belly-to-belly throws. The challenger wanted a Claymore Kick as Reigns left the ring. A spinebuster into a jackknife pinfall gave McIntrye a near-fall.
The champion intercepted a Claymore Kick with a devastating Superman Punch for a two-count. The champion locked in the guillotine choke hold in an attempt to get McIntrye to submit. The challenger speared the champion through the barricade. Reigns again intercepted a Claymore Kick with another spear for a 2.99!
McIntyre clocked Reigns with a Claymore Kick to the back of the head and into the referee, Charles Robinson. Austin Theory then made an attempt to cash in his MITB, but Tyson Fury knocked his lights out from the crowd. Back in the ring, the champion has a chair and ate a Claymore Kick for yet another near-fall!
A slugfest ensued between both superstars, followed by a blitz of offense, a headbutt, a spear by the challenger, and a Claymore Kick. McIntyre was one second away from being WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out before the three-count. Reigns capitalized and delivered a massive spear for the victory!
- ‘The Scottish Warrior’ Drew McIntrye made an amazing entrance, which was highlighted by a storybook video package with his Broken Dreams theme song! The raucous crowd was red-hot for the biggest match of McIntyre’s career since his breakout year in 2020, which was thwarted by Covid. The UK crowd was chanting, “Oh, Drew McIntyre,” before the champion made his entrance.
- Roman Reigns always looks like a million bucks during his elaborate entrance; this time he was all alone. ‘The Tribal Chief’ had his most difficult title defense to date. Drew McIntyre has always been a thorn in Reigns’ side, ever since returning to WWE in 2018. Reigns went on to have a history-making 1,316-day title reign until Cody Rhodes defeated him at WrestleMania 40. The Tribal Chief won this year’s Royal Rumble and won the World Championship from CM Punk in a five-star classic.
- Solo Sikoa made his shocking debut when McIntrye delivered a Claymore Kick and pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. The Scottish Warrior has not had the same amount of momentum since the PLE. Yes, he won the world title for about four minutes and was the WWE Undisputed Champion for a month this year, but still, he hasn’t felt like a dangerous threat. Since Sikoa’s debut on the main roster, he’s been the silent enforcer for The Bloodline, the Tribal Chief, and now the leader of the MFTs. He has portrayed a menacing and funny heel at times, and I could see him becoming WWE or World Heavyweight Champion by next year.

Chris King Looks Back: Edge vs Randy Orton in the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.
‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.
The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.
Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.
In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.
The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.
The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!
Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!
