In some sad news to report this evening, the former owner and president of the National Wrestling Alliance, R. Bruce Tharpe, has revealed via Twitter that the legendary Jose Lothario has passed away at the age of 83. Bill Apter has since confirmed the news:

Sad news today. The great JOSE LOTHARIO has passed away. So thankful that I had the opportunity to induct him into the NWA Hall of Fame while I served as President. He was so happy and it was my pleasure to induct him. God bless you Jose Lothario and may you Rest In Peace.

Billed from San Antonio, Texas, Lothario spent the majority of his career working with the NWA, most notably with Championship Wrestling From Florida where he won numerous titles including the Florida Brass Knuckles Championship three times, and Florida Tag Team Titles twice. He was also a four-time NWA Florida World Tag Champion, twice with Wahoo McDaniel.

WWE fans will of course be most familiar with Lothario for training WWE Hall Of Famer Shawn Michaels and later becoming his manager in 1996. He accompanied ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ to the ring at WrestleMania XII where Michaels won his first WWF Championship from Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart. Lothario would also compete in the ring that year in September at In Your House: Mind Games, defeating James E. Cornette. In 2017, Lothario’s career was recognized with an induction in the National Wrestling Alliance Hall Of Fame.
