Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig has passed away today at the age of 82!

Just one day after losing the legendary Dynamite Kid, there is more sad news for the wrestling world and its fans today as PWInsider is confirming that Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig has passed away at the age of 82.

Of course, today’s fans will know Larry Hennig best as being the grandfather of former Intercontinental Champion, RAW Tag Team Champion and current WWE Superstar Curtis Axel, real name Joe Hennig. Then, obviously there’s Larry’s late son, WWE Hall Of Famer ‘Mr. Perfect’ Curt Hennig. Before his son and grandson made names for themselves though, Larry got the ball rolling first in the 1960’s under the training of another WWE Hall Of Famer and founder of the AWA, Verne Gagne.

It was in the AWA where ‘The Axe’ would become most successful, winning the World Tag Team Titles on four occasions (three times with WWE Hall Of Famer Harley Race) and spend essentially his entire career. However, Hennig did make the rounds, as most competitors of his era do, also making appearances for the National Wrestling Alliance and World Wide Wrestling Federation where he had challenged Bruno Sammartino for the WWWF Championship at Madison Square Garden.

Larry’s final days in the wrestling business on-camera would come in the mid-1980’s when Curt was breaking into the AWA. The two would even team together against the likes of The Road Warriors before Larry finally hung up his boots for good in 1985.
