Chairshot Classics: WWF Royal Rumble ’89 – No Partners…30 Opponents
Video: There’s a montage of pre-recorded comments from more Royal Rumble participants featuring Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake, Greg ‘The Hammer’ Valentine, The Powers Of Pain & Mr. Fuji, ‘Big’ John Studd, Mr. Perfect and more.
Backstage: ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund is joined by ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase & Virgil. MDM speaks about how being as wealthy as him allows for luck. Gene interrupts and asks about his meeting with Slick, DiBiase wondering why Okerlund is prying into his business. On the other side is Sean Mooney with Andre The Giant, Bobby’ The Brain’ Heenan & The Brainbusters. Heenan states he doesn’t know how the other managers prepare his men, but you can be sure that his guys are ready. Tully says it’s an honor to be in the Rumble, Arn saying in order to win you have to go for the jugular. Andre doesn’t know when he’s coming into the ring, but he knows when he’s going out and that’s last. Gene is now with Hulk Hogan, Hogan telling him that the Rumble will be the resurrection of Hulkamania. If Boss Man gets in his way, he’ll give him a lifelong sentence. Okerlund wonders aloud if it could come down to Hogan & Savage, Hulk saying they’re friends, but Macho will find out why he has the largest arms in the world.
Match #4 is the Royal Rumble Match
- Entry #1 is Ax. Entry #2 is Smash. Demolition goes right after each other at the bell. They take turns hitting the ropes and colliding shoulder, neither getting the advantage. Smash with big rights to Ax in the corner, charges in and runs into a boot. Ax fires out with a clothesline, then pummels his tag partner to the mat. Smash to his feet, goes to the midsection and then slams Ax, following with a clothesline. He now pummels Ax into the canvas, then grabs a chinlock. Ax goes to the eyes to break it, tosses Smash over the top and he hangs onto the ropes to stay in. Smash clobbers Ax from behind, more right hands in the corner as the clock counts down…

Michaels flattens Perfect with a clothesline, taking a dropkick that nearly eliminates him. Andre has bludgeoned Valentine & Bass, Michaels & Perfect duking it out in the corner. Michaels heads up top, connecting with a double fist to Brock & Bass, Valentine nearly eliminating him with an atomic drop as the clock strikes zero…

Michaels comes to the rescue as The Rockers team up for a double back elbow, then a double dropkick that sends Bass flying over the top rope. ‘Outlaw’ Ron Bass has been eliminated. Santana ducks a right off the ropes from The Hammer, connects with the flying forearm and Butch comes in to lend a hand in trying to toss Valentine as the next entrant is ready to come out…

Mr. Perfect has been eliminated. The Brainbusters dump Tito as the camera is focused on Hogan and Bad News in the corner. Tito Santana has been eliminated. The Brainbusters and Brown have Hulk planked across the top in the corner, trying to get him over the top as the countdown begins…
- Entry #19 is Bushwhacker Luke. Bad News tosses Butch just as his partner Luke is getting into the action, The Mega Powers put Brown in a tough spot right after. Bushwhacker Butch has been eliminated. Everyone pairs off now with The Brainbusters switching off to help each other out. Hogan presses Blanchard, dropping him across the top rope throat-first. Hogan connects with a big boot to Arn as the clock hits zero…
- Entry #20 is Koko B. Ware. Koko hits the ring and delivers a couple of dropkicks, then rescues Macho Man from Bad News. Double A climbs upstairs, Hogan sees it and slams Anderson to the canvas. Hulk goes to the eyes of Luke and Koko as they double team him, he back drops The Birdman to the outside, then does the same for Luke. Koko B. Ware has been eliminated. Bushwhacker Luke has been eliminated. The Brainbusters with a double team to Hogan, as Bad News pummels Savage and here’s the clock…
- Entry #21 is The Warlord. As Warlord makes his way to the ring, Hulk gets ahold of Tully & Arn, sending them both flying backwards over the top rope and to the floor. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard have been eliminated. Warlord poses on the apron, steps in and is immediately clothesline by The Hulkster back out. The Warlord has been eliminated. Bad News has Savage in trouble on the ropes, Hogan’s feeling it now and he grabs them both and dumps them over the top. Bad News Brown & ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage have been eliminated. Macho hops right back in the ring and gets in Hulk’s face, hot that he threw him over the top. Hogan tries to explain, but Macho isn’t hearing it and there’s some shoving. Elizabeth makes her way out to the ring, stepping between The Mega Powers, pleading with both of them and getting them to shake hands as our next entrant is…
- Entry #22 is Big Boss Man. Savage wishes Hogan luck before he leaves, Boss Man entering the ring and Hogan levels him with a clothesline. Hulkster dropping elbows, slams Boss Man, then tries to whip him into the corner. Boss Man reverses, following in with a splash, then spiking Hogan with a piledriver and basking in the crowds ‘boos’. Boss Man plants Hulk with a slam, then misses a splash as the buzzer goes off…
- Entry #23 is Akeem. The Twin Towers are joined now, but Hogan rams them into one another, slams The African Dream and then the numbers game finally catches up to him. Hulk almost gets tossed out, slides out and then gives them a double noggin knocker. He back suplexes Boss Man, but Akeem has recovered and ambushes him from behind. The Twin Towers with a double splash to the Hulkster, then they both toss him to the outside. Hulk Hogan has been eliminated. Hulk pulls Boss Man to the outside, sending him into the timekeeper’s table. Akeem is out after the Hulkster as the next entrant comes out…
- Entry #24 is Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake. Brutus heads right over to Hogan’s aid, the legal men finally get in the ring and the referees regain order. The Twin Towers double team Brutus, Boss Man hits the ropes and Hogan pulls the top rope, causing Boss Man to spill out to the floor. Big Boss Man has been eliminated. Hogan and Boss Man brawl their way up the aisle and back to the locker room area, Akeem totally dominating The Barber in the ring, planking him across the top in the corner as the buzzer sounds…
- Entry #25 is The Red Rooster. Rooster goes right after Akeem and that was a bad idea, The African Dream planting him with a slam, then turning into a 2nd rope double axe from Beefcake. Akeem gets sent into the corner, Rooster & Brutus working together and whipping each other into The African Dream in the corner. Akeem’s size saves him from being tossed out, fighting off the double team briefly. The African Dream gets tied up in the ropes as the clock counts down…
- Entry #26 is The Barbarian. Barbarian evens up the heel and face odds, helping Akeem out, then getting attacked by The African Dream. The 4 pair off in opposite corners, Rooster reigning down rights to Akeem from the 2nd rope. Akeem battles off an elimination attempt, dropping The Rooster and squashing him with a 747 as the next entrant makes their way to the ring…
- Entry #27 is ‘Big’ John Studd. Studd steps over the top, shoving The Rooster out of the way to go after Akeem. The two big men exchange shots in the corner as Barbarian levels Rooster. Brutus is over to help out, choking Barbarian with the top rope as the clock strikes zero…
- Entry #28 is Hercules. Herc enters the ring, lending a hand to The Barber on Barbarian. Hercules tries to help Studd out with Akeem, Studd pushes him off and flattens him with a clothesline as the next entrant hits the ring…
- Entry #29 is Rick Martel. Martel goes right for The African Dream, Big John again pushing away any kind of help, wanting Akeem to himself. Martel dropkicks Rooster, gets him to his shoulders and attempts to dump him out unsuccessfully. The battle rages on as our final entrant makes his way out.
Entry #30 is ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase. DiBiase goes right after his rival Hercules, turns his attention to The Rooster and eats a flying forearm out of the ropes. Rooster with rights in the corner, DiBiase turns the tables, whips him across and Rooster is turned upside down, falling over the top and outside. The Red Rooster is eliminated. Herc still wants a piece of MDM, flattening him with clotheslines and then beating him down with heavy shots in the corner. The Barber grabs a sleeper on Hercules, Herc stumbles to the ropes and DiBiase along with Barbarian come from behind to dump them out. Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake & Hercules have been eliminated.
Barbarian with a big shoulder tackle to Martel, powerslams him to the canvas and then connects with a diving headbutt off the top. Barbarian hits the ropes, missing a clothesline, Martel with a dropkick to the back and Barbarian is sent over the top. The Barbarian has been eliminated. We’re down to 4, pairing off and Martel avoids a corner splash from Akeem, hitting multiple dropkicks. He goes for a crossbody, The African Dream catches him and hurls him to the floor. Rick Martel has been eliminated. DiBiase & Akeem double team Big John, wearing him out in the corner as MDM directs traffic.
Akeem with a corner splash, DiBiase tells him to do it again and Studd pulls DiBiase in front of him. Akeem tries to help MDM to his feet, Studd grabbing him from behind and tossing him over. Akeem has been eliminated. DiBiase gets to his feet, turns around and realizes he’s left alone against Big John. MDM tries to buy him off, but it doesn’t work and Studd grabs him by the throat off the 2nd rope. He drops DiBiase in the corner, catches MDM’s foot and connects with a big right, slamming him to the mat. Studd with a double underhook suplex, then a gutwrench and an irish whip for a clothesline. Big John grabs ahold of DiBiase, sending him flying to the outside.
Winner: ‘Big’ John Studd
- After The Bell: Virgil ambushes Studd from behind to no affect, Big John leveling him with a shoulder out of the ropes and then a body slam. He sends Virgil in for a clothesline, then tosses him outside for an ‘unofficial elimination’.
- EA’s Take: Interesting choice of a winner here, as it would lead you to believe that the WWF had big plans for Big John following coming out of retirement in late 1988. This would become Studd’s signature win of his career however, as the Royal Rumble match’s importance was not on par with where it is today. The match was booked better than last year’s 20 man version, but still needs tweaking as the final few guys in the ring didn’t make much sense. The friction continuing to rise between The Mega Powers is the bigger story here.
EA’s Finisher: Although the Rumble match itself still needs adjustments in terms of booking, it was far more entertaining than the inaugural one last year. The undercard still needs a lot of work, as it seems WWF isn’t keen on the idea of having Rumble participants work twice. It was odd that last year’s winner ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan would be completely left out because of competing in the opening 6 man contest. The booking of Harley Race/Haku was shotty at best, Bobby Heenan being the only entertaining part of it with his constant flip-flopping during the match to whoever had the upper-hand. Interest in women’s wrestling was completely dwindled at this point, making the WWF Women’s Title match completely meaningless. Things would pick-up however, heading to the next event WrestleMania V.
Top Three To Watch
1 – Hart Foundation & Jim Duggan vs. The Rougeaus & Dino Bravo
2 – Royal Rumble Match
3 – Harley Race vs. King Haku

Chris King Looks Back at WWE Clash In The Castle 2022
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
With WWE Clash In Italy fast approaching, Chris King looks back at the first Clash In The Castle!
We are a few weeks away from WWE Clash In Italy PLE, which airs on May 31st. Chris King has gone back to look at the 2022 Clash At The Castle PLE and the matches with the most important future implications.
Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky
All six superstars started the match in front of this wild UK crowd. The babyfaces took advantage early with a triple suplex, and Bianca Bel-Air hit her patented springboard moonsault and covered Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai for a near fall. Alexa Bliss and Sky got the match going with some fast-paced offense. Bliss hit their Glitz Flip, and Sky tagged in the leader of Damage Control. Despite the crowd chanting for Bayley, “I wanna know, will you be my girl?” the methodical heel would purposely tag out for most of this match.
Bliss hit a beautiful sunset flip powerbomb and covered Sky, but Kai was the legal participant, so she ate a huge kick. Asuka and Sky now went toe-to-toe with some incredibly fast-paced action (I can’t wait to watch their match at Backlash); these two have insane chemistry. The crowd wanted the Raw Women’s Champion and Bayley tagged in. The EST is showcasing her raw power over all of Damage Control. The babyfaces looked to rally after a superplex off of Belair’s back. The heels took advantage of the numbers game; Kai hit her signature Kaio Kick, Bayley delivered Rose Plant, and Sky hit her picture-perfect moonsault. Bayley got the huge victory for Damage Control!
- This was a breakout performance for the new dangerous trio “Damage Control.” Bayley was such a genius changing the theme music so the crowd couldn’t sing it. That’s Heel 101. Bayley tagging out and not giving the UK crowd what they wanted was brilliant.
- Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky would run roughshod on SmackDown for the entire year with some amazing performances, including headlining WarGames. The Damage Control storyline would continue through the next two years, and Bayley would ultimately win the Women’s
Championship from Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40.
Gunther VS. Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)
Ludwig Kaiser introduced Giovanni Vinci, bringing back together Imperium as ‘The Ring General’ made his way down to the ring. The bell rang, and the punishment began as Sheamus’s chest was already red. Gunter chopped ‘The Celtic Warrior’ right off the turnbuckle to the outside. The challenger was writhing in pain as Gunther locked in a Boston Crab.
Sheamus was fighting for his life to become a grand-slam champion here, taking all of the champions’ brutality. Gunther delivered a nasty bodyslam to Sheamus on the outside. The Celtic Warrior was finally able to deliver The 10 Beats of the Bodhran for a count of twelve.
Midway through the match, both the champion and the challenger got into a slugfest, and Sheamus hit a loud knee strike for a two-count! Sheamus delivered White Noise for another near-fall. The entire UK crowd was on their feet as the Brogue Kick was countered;
Gunther hit his patented dropkick into the corner. Sheamus lifted Gunther up for the Celtic Cross from the turnbuckle for a count of 2.99! The Celtic Warrior tried to go for the brogue kick, but his back gave out. The Intercontinental Champion delivered a powerbomb followed by a colossal lariat to retain his prestigious title.
Sheamus got a standing ovation from the raucous UK crowd despite his loss. He may not have won the intercontinental title, but he won their respect!
- Both Brutes stood in the middle of the ring, staring at each other without throwing a punch as their faction members fought to solidify a singles match with no interference. That was so brilliant and creative to see. As soon as the match got underway, both superstars beat the holy hell of each other for 20+ minutes.
- ‘The Ring General’ would have the longest reign of 666 days in WWE history as Intercontinental Champion, defeating the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable. He would eventually lose to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, but Gunther has the bar so high with such an amazing reign.
Edge & Rey Mysterio VS. The Judgement Day
Finn Balor and Rey Mysterio started the tag team match with some hard chops in the corner. Mysterio bounced back with some head-scissors takedown, and Damien Priest tagged in and clocked Edge with a nasty right hand. ‘The Rated-R Superstar was all fired up with some quick offense, sending Mysterio onto both JD members on the outside.
Priest and Balor utilized the numbers game to take out their opponents with a leg drop and some double-team maneuvers. Mysterio had taken a lot of punishment and wanted to make the tag to Edge, but Priest prevented the tag with a big boot.
The former leader of the JD came in firing on all cylinders, hitting some clotheslines and nailing Balor with an Edgecution. The UK crowd was going wild for Edge as he delivered his tag-partner’s signature 619, followed by a splash from Mysterio for a near-fall.
Edge intercepted a chokeslam attempt on Mysterio with a spear to the outside! Dominik interfered to help his dad hit a sunset flip powerbomb, and Rhea Ripley made him pay. Mysterio and Edge ensured the victory with a 619 and a picture-perfect Spear!
Following the match, Dominik would low-blow Edge and take his father’s head off with a wicked clothesline. This was the last time he was side-by-side with his father for the foreseeable future in WWE.
- Edge was trying to get comeuppance on the faction he helped create and was kicked out of. The Judgment Day had been targeting and terrorizing Rey’s son Dominik for months now, who was at ringside. ‘The Rated-R Superstar would ultimately get his revenge on JD at WrestleMania 39, when he faced “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell.
- This was the birth of Dirty Dom, after being jealous of his dad choosing Edge as his tag partner instead of him. After the match, Dominik gave Edge a low blow and clotheslined his dad’s head off to a loud cheer from
the crowd. His heel turn has been the greatest creative decision in his young career.
- Dirty Dom is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time NXT North American Champion, and current AAA Mega Champion during his time in The Judgment Day, and he’s one step away from becoming world heavyweight champion.
Roman Reigns VS. Drew McIntrye (WWE Undisputed Universal Championship)
The always overconfident and arrogant undisputed champion and his challenger locked up with the power of one-upmanship. Reigns had been trash-talking his opponent, and McIntyre made his rival back away. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion looks shook because of this insane UK crowd.
The champion answered back with some heavy right hands to his challenger. Reigns looks scared as McIntrye has his way with the champion. Karrion Kross and Scarlet provided a distraction, which allowed Reigns to take advantage. The confident champion now is slowing down the match with explosive, powerful offense like we’ve seen throughout his title reign thus far.
Reigns delivered a big boot, and his challenger kicked out at one! The champion mocked and trash-talked McIntrye and delivered some nasty punches. Both superstars tried to deliver suplexes to each other but to no avail. Reigns then grabbed the mic for Cardiff to acknowledge their Tribal Chief, and The Scottish Warrior hit a Glasgow Kiss to the champion. McIntyre fired up and delivered his patented belly-to-belly throws. The challenger wanted a Claymore Kick as Reigns left the ring. A spinebuster into a jackknife pinfall gave McIntrye a near-fall.
The champion intercepted a Claymore Kick with a devastating Superman Punch for a two-count. The champion locked in the guillotine choke hold in an attempt to get McIntrye to submit. The challenger speared the champion through the barricade. Reigns again intercepted a Claymore Kick with another spear for a 2.99!
McIntyre clocked Reigns with a Claymore Kick to the back of the head and into the referee, Charles Robinson. Austin Theory then made an attempt to cash in his MITB, but Tyson Fury knocked his lights out from the crowd. Back in the ring, the champion has a chair and ate a Claymore Kick for yet another near-fall!
A slugfest ensued between both superstars, followed by a blitz of offense, a headbutt, a spear by the challenger, and a Claymore Kick. McIntyre was one second away from being WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out before the three-count. Reigns capitalized and delivered a massive spear for the victory!
- ‘The Scottish Warrior’ Drew McIntrye made an amazing entrance, which was highlighted by a storybook video package with his Broken Dreams theme song! The raucous crowd was red-hot for the biggest match of McIntyre’s career since his breakout year in 2020, which was thwarted by Covid. The UK crowd was chanting, “Oh, Drew McIntyre,” before the champion made his entrance.
- Roman Reigns always looks like a million bucks during his elaborate entrance; this time he was all alone. ‘The Tribal Chief’ had his most difficult title defense to date. Drew McIntyre has always been a thorn in Reigns’ side, ever since returning to WWE in 2018. Reigns went on to have a history-making 1,316-day title reign until Cody Rhodes defeated him at WrestleMania 40. The Tribal Chief won this year’s Royal Rumble and won the World Championship from CM Punk in a five-star classic.
- Solo Sikoa made his shocking debut when McIntrye delivered a Claymore Kick and pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. The Scottish Warrior has not had the same amount of momentum since the PLE. Yes, he won the world title for about four minutes and was the WWE Undisputed Champion for a month this year, but still, he hasn’t felt like a dangerous threat. Since Sikoa’s debut on the main roster, he’s been the silent enforcer for The Bloodline, the Tribal Chief, and now the leader of the MFTs. He has portrayed a menacing and funny heel at times, and I could see him becoming WWE or World Heavyweight Champion by next year.

Chris King Looks Back: Edge vs Randy Orton in the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.
‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.
The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.
Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.
In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.
The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.
The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!
Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!
