What’s Next For The NXT Championship?
What will NXT do with “Goldie” next?
Wrestling fans were hit with a shocking bit of news on Wednesday: Tommaso Ciampa, the current NXT Champion and one of the best heels on the planet, is going to be out indefinitely with a neck injury that will require him to undergo surgery.
I’m a big Tommy Sports Entertainment fan, so this news sucks for me, as well as it does for thousands upon thousands of Big Daddy Ciampa fans. But sadly, the news is out there, there’s nothing we could do to fix the situation, we’ve got to look to the future.
But what exactly does the future hold?
This is surely an unprecedented situation for the yellow brand. Here we are just a month out from NXT Takeover: New York, the Takeover before WrestleMania. It’s one of the biggest shows NXT will put on all year, and suddenly we find ourselves without an NXT champion heading into the show.
Not only that, but this remarkable story they’ve been telling with Ciampa and Johnny Gargano, a story that dates back almost TWO YEARS, has come grinding to a halt. Every expectation out there was that it would be Gargano-Ciampa IV for the NXT Championship at Takeover, but clearly the WWE is going to have to go back to the drawing board on this one.
Now, there are a couple of different ways they could take the title here. Do they just hand it to someone? Do they have a match for it on NXT TV? Do they wait until Takeover to crown a new champ?
Allow me to make a suggestion: Six-Man NXT Championship Ladder Match.
IT was this time last year when the NXT North American Championship, currently held by the Velveteen Dream, was ushered into existence as a secondary title for talent to compete for on Wednesday nights. Just how did we get our first NXT North American Champion? In an absolutely off-the-charts amazing six-man ladder match between Dream, Killian Dain, Lars Sullivan, Ricochet, EC3 and the eventual winner, Adam Cole.
That match was heralded as one of the very best NXT matches of all time, and received a fabled (if you put stock into this sort of thing) five-star rating from Dave Meltzer. We’re right on the anniversary of that match, so why not bring the ladders back out and let NXT’s finest go to war for the NXT Championship?
It’s a smart way to inspire a new tradition, a way to honor the past while looking to the future, and above all, it’s an easy way to guarantee an insane match that will send the fans home happy.
So who should be in this match? Here’s who I propose: Johnny Gargano, Adam Cole, Velveteen Dream, Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, and Dominik Dijakovic. That way, you have your two hosses that could also achieve high-flying feats that just don’t seem possible, while also mixing in undeniable star-talent. With this group of six, I don’t think there’s a wrong way to book the future of the NXT Championship.
All six of these guys are deserving at a shot at NXT’s top title, with Lee and Dijakovic working their way into the picture after a simply sensational match on last week’s NXT TV. The other four competitors are proven commodities like Cole, Dream and Gargano, and Matt Riddle being the ultimate wildcard that has a very reasonable chance to win the match despite being the newest to the brand.
In fact, that’s probably how I would book the match if I were given that sort of power. We just had a long heel championship reign, a marvelous one at that from Ciampa, but I’d like to see a change of pace here, so I’d say no to Cole and Dijakovic. Lee’s not ready yet I don’t think, Johnny should focus on the main roster, Dream’s already wearing championship gold…which leaves us with Matt Riddle.
What better way to establish the King of Bros as a megastar by having him step up and knock off this who’s-who field of wrestling greats? The man is going to be NXT champ sooner or later, and probably sooner, so what’s the harm in pulling that trigger in New York?

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.
While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.
‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?
I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.
Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.
The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.
All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.
As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
