In what turned out to be a two a horse race last week, we did have a very definitive winner. WWE MiTB: Universal Championship: AJ Styles vs Seth Rollins (c), won by quite a bit.
Well this week WWE doesn’t make the list, so we’re bound to get a little more variety in May. I’m assuming most people have seen a couple of these. Especially since the landscape outside of WWE got a little wider this weekend.
5. AEW Double or Nothing: Kenny Omega vs Chris Jericho

Snippet from Mitchell’s Coverage:
Jericho wobbles again and Omega spins him around. Omega wants a third but Jericho wheelbarrow victory rolls, to the Walls of Jericho! But Omega throws him off! Jericho walks into a kick, underhooks, Tiger Bomb! Cover, TWO!! Jericho still lives as that bomb wasn’t hard enough. Omega takes aim again as fans rally and duel. BANG, but the V-Trigger is caught to Walls of Jericho! Jericho sits deep and fans reach a fever pitch as Omega endures! Omega crawls but Jericho sits deeper. Omega powers up but Jericho drags him away! Jericho shifts to get a knee on Omega’s back! Omega powers out and kicks Jericho away! Omega blocks the boot to hit a roaring elbow. But Jericho hits back, only to run into a V-Trigger!
Fans drum for the Terminator again as Omega drags Jericho up. Electric Chair, but Jericho spins out to a DDT! And it wasn’t pretty. But Omega covers Jericho first, TWO! Both men are down, and fans rally up again. Jericho and Omega both stand, and Omega punches only to get an enziguri! Jericho gives Omega a short knee to the head, then springboards, but Omega catches him! Electric Chair, but Jericho spins through to get a cleaner DDT! Jericho runs to get a Code Breaker! And then Jericho runs to hit the Judas Effect elbow!! Cover, Jericho wins?!
Winner: Jericho via Judas Effect
Rating: **** 1/4
4. NJPW BOSJ 26 Night 7: El Phantasmo vs Will Ospreay

Phantasmo made a name for himself in England, and has a little history with Ospreay. Being a former winner and generally seen as a favorite, Ospreay looks to clip the wings of the brash upstart.
Ospreay’s aggression was high during this match. He started fast with strikes, attacking ELP into the crowd and just being borderline cruel. Ospreay even teased the Spanish Fly off the apron, since he really seemed to want to hurt ELP. However, the brash ELP managed to counter Ospreay’s bigger moves and actually caught him on multiple occasions.
Ospreay got blinded from trying to make an example of ELP, so he was really his own undoing. Great match with tournament and future implications.
Winner: ELP via CR2
Rating: **** 1/2
3. AJPW Super Power Series Night 2: Triple Crown Championship: Kento Miyahara (c) vs Shuji Ishikawa

Kento tends to always put on great title matches. Ishikawa earned this by beating Kento during the Round Robin portion of the Champion Carnival.
Ishikawa was much more energetic than usual. He took it to Kento quickly, hit a Wrecking Ball Dropkick from nowhere and then toyed with Kento and the referee. Kento was on the back foot for what seemed like half of the match, until he feigned an injury and took a short cut to get back some momentum.
What we got was both men throwing everything at one another. Kento kicked out of everything except the Giant Slam, which he just wriggled out of, and Kento had to win with his usual finish of the Shutdown Suplex. Yes, the arms came uncaptured during the hold, so it did look a little awkward for the three count, but the match itself was damn damn good.
Winner: Kento via Shutdown Suplex Hold

2. AEW Double or Nothing: AAA Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks (c) vs Lucha Brothers

From My Analysis:
I’m very happy there was the unveiling ceremony between the Rhodes match and this one. Cause this was a great match and moving it out too quick could’ve hurt the crowd immersion. Great tandem moves, a decent thread of the ring rust playing a part against the Young Bucks early on and just generally great spots. There definitely was a lot of stuff, big spots and it was “spot monkey” style, but it all worked. The Lucha Brothers pulled out crazy moves to try and get the AAA belts back and the Bucks were trying to prove they still had it with most of the year off. Just really really good.
Winner: Bucks via Meltzer Driver
Rating: *****
1. AEW Double or Nothing: Dustin Rhodes vs Cody Rhodes

From My Analysis:
Wow. Dustin and Cody brought it, Dustin bladed pretty deep, I think even Dusty would’ve blushed. New moves from Dustin like the Misawa style Apron Senton, a Code Red and a few classics. The blood, the desire to keep fighting, this was everything wrestling should be. It made sense for Cody to win the match of course, but wow after the match was a beautiful moment. Also call of the night might have to go to Excalibur when Cody hit a Pump Kick aka Bicycle Kick and you hear him say something like ” He hit him with a BICYCLE”. In a huge homage to Dustin and Dusty’s Heart to Heart promo, Cody tells Dustin he can’t retire, because he needs a partner. He doesn’t just need a partner, he needs his big brother. This was a great way cap off such a hard hitting personal match. Wow.
Winner: Cody via Crossroads

Thoughts:
What? Did you not read my Double or Nothing article? Cody vs Dustin win my vote. Words can’t describe how tremendous that match was from a story telling and emotional aspect. Kudos.

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.
While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.
‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?
I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.
Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.
The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.
All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.
As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
