Tiffany’s Takes: WWE Raw (7/1/2019)

WWE Raw has new leadership and more elements fans have been missing. See the end result in Tiffany’s Takes!
It’s a new day on WWE RAW! How did WWE cope with another sudden change in direction?
So tonight was the first night of RAW under the leadership of Paul Heyman. I’m going to admit to being very skeptical about this since everything I’ve ever known about Vince McMahon says that he won’t relinquish control of his kingdom until he’s six feet under. That said, this was a really good RAW as a starter for Heyman, however I’m still retaining my skepticism as to this lasting long-term.
Braun Strowman/Bobby Lashley starting off the show was a good move and gave the show an oldish-school feel. Also, Graves swearing was hilarious. I’m not surprised that there was a non-finish, I am surprised that they decided to destroy the video wall and take out the brain of the show. Not sure that was a smart idea.
The fact that it’s taken so long for us to get Viking Raiders vs New Day is a crime against sports fans. I am disappointed that the Samoa Joe/Kofi Kingston storyline got pushed in, but it suits Joe’s MO. Also, Viking Raiders as heels works better than them as faces. The inevitable six man was okay, I’m not surprised that the heels won
Drake Maverick’s obsession with the WWE 24/7 Championship is hilarious. It’s also funny that his wife, Renee Michelle who is also a wrestler, is acting like this is totally new to her. R-Truth is straight up trolling though. I want Maverick to have another shot, just for the fuck of it.
I’m curious about where this Styles/Club story is going since Gallows and Anderson are supposedly leaving in September. It makes me wonder if there’s been a change of heart with AJ Styles back on RAW. I also liked how the…constructive criticism goes both ways. Though, the crack about Karl Anderson’s wife is odd.
I’m not sure what Cesaro did wrong to get No Way Jose tonight or why Heyman felt the need to put Truth in this, but was amusing, as was the inevitable chase Truth spot. I normally hate squash matches, but I don’t blame Cesaro for being pissed about this whole thing.
The Street Profits randomly being on RAW was cool. I’ve been saying for awhile that WWE needs to do more to bring NXT people in before they jump to the main roster so audiences can get used to them and get behind them instead of just dumping them in. Maybe Paul Heyman at the wheel will make that happen.
I love everyone selling that spot through the video wall, made it feel more real than just moving on with the show. I also loved The Miz owning up to trying to ride Shane’s coattails and saying what we’ve all been thinking about Shane McMahon lately. I’m also glad to see The Miz and Shane’s feud on RAW instead of on SmackDown.
I’m really over Shane being an active-ish part of the roster every week and I’m also bored to tears by Drew McIntyre. I know he (McIntyre) has a lot of supporters but he’s boring as fuck. It doesn’t matter how over him I think I am, The Undertaker’s entrance will always give me chills and excite me. I love seeing the ‘Oh shit, here he comes!’ moments. Even the biggest and baddest men get the shakes when the Deadman arrives, never mind once the promo starts. I also love that Shane still gets spooked by Taker, whom he’s known for thirty years.
I desperately hope that Extreme Rules is the end of Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans getting title shots. Corbin’s come a long way, but it’s time for Seth to move on. Evans is just…not good, not as good as she should be considering that she got a shot at the champion over women who are much better in the ring than her, Natalya being one of them. That match was just…meh. Nattie tried to make Evans look good, but she couldn’t hide the fact that Evans is extremely awkward looking in some of her moves and Corbin getting involved was blah.
Love Gallows and Anderson pumping up Ricochet, but I still don’t know where this whole story is going. I do love Ricochet’s confidence in his considerable skills. If there’s a rematch between him and Styles, it’ll be even more amazing! I’m just not sure what to think about the Club stirring the pot.
2-Out-Of-3 Falls between The Miz and Elias was really good. I was surprised that it wasn’t shorter, since those matches tend to be short due to TV. Plus, it was nice for Miz to finally be on RAW instead of SmackDown, wild card or not. Also, Miz getting a win was nice.
I think Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins are a super cute couple but I’m tired of their relationship being shoehorned into their title storylines. Plus, I’m not feeling a lot of love for Seth due to his comments about Jon Moxley last week. It does look like Seth’s turning heel, which works for him a little better, but I’m ready for him to work with other people. Mike & Maria Kanellis turning up on RAW was interesting. I could definitely go for Mike Kanellis vs Seth Rollins. Let’s have that match instead of the one with Corbin and Evans.
The match could’ve been good, I’m not sure what was going on or why it was decided to have Becky get the win over Mike that way, maybe they need to go back to 205. Nothing about that made sense, but okay.
I appreciate that Heyman’s only on-screen segment were as Lesnar’s advocate and the Profits teasing him was a lot of fun.
I’m still not totally with the Alexa Bliss/Nikki Cross storyline, but I love any chance to have Carmella on TV. I also loved Carmella FINALLY getting a match without Truth interrupting! I wonder if something’s up with Alexa because that’s an odd finish for someone in the title picture. I hope that Nikki wakes up to Bliss using her soon, but that will probably be the lead up to SummerSlam, if I had to guess. I wish Carmella could get a storyline of her own without R-Truth.
Speaking of…I’m glad Maverick got the title back, now he can consummate his marriage and be happy. Hopefully, Truth doesn’t show up and ruin that night too.
So, the Club storyline has finally taken shape. AJ Styles is fully heel again after an AMAZING US Title Match to close RAW. The way it was done was really good and sets the stage for a third match at Extreme Rules. I’m guessing that either Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson re-signed or they’re getting a big storyline to end their run, either way, it’ll be interesting.
That’s it for Tiffany’s RAW Takes! Tune in tomorrow for WWE SmackDown and 205 Live!

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.
While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.
‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?
I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.
Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.
The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.
All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.
As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
