On This Date in Wrestling History:
1967 – Waldo and Fritz Von Erich’s second reign as NWA American Tag Team Champions ended with a loss to Brute Bernard & Mike Paidousis.
1983 – Austin Idol defeats Stan Hansen for the AWA International Heavyweight Title, starting his third reign with the belt.
1985 – The second episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event was taped in New Jersey. The main feature was the wedding of Uncle Elmer.
- Hulk Hogan defeated Nikolai Volkoff to retain the WWF Championship.
- Uncle Elmer defeated Johnny Valiant in just 12 seconds. The announced match time was six seconds; either way, it’s the fastest match in WWF history, knocking off the record set by King Kong Bundy at WrestleMania back in March of the same year.
- Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper fought to a double countout.
- Andre the Giant & Tony Atlas defeated Big John Studd & King Kong Bundy via disqualification.
- The Dream Team (Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake) defeated Lanny Poffo & Tony Garea for the WWF Tag Team Championship.
1991 – WWE presented a 20 man over the top battle royal titled The Battle Royal at the Albert Hall from the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. The British Bulldog was the winner of the bout.
1999 -WWF via press release on their website announced that writers Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara were leaving for WCW following a secret meeting over the weekend in Atlanta. Neither Russo nor Ferrara at the time of the meeting was under contract to the WWF, and Russo called Vince McMahon with news. The news was a blow to the WWF, as it came just two weeks before their IPO (initial public offering).
2004 – WWE visits the Meadowlands again this time to present No Mercy.
- Eddie Guerrero defeated Luther Reigns.
- Spike Dudley defeated Nunzio to retain the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.
- Billy Kidman defeated Paul London.
- Kenzo Suzuki and René Duprée defeated Rey Mysterio and Rob Van Dam to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship.
- The Big Show defeated Kurt Angle.
- John Cena defeated Booker T to win their best of five series 3-2 and the WWE United States Championship.
- Charlie Haas, Rico, and Miss Jackie defeated The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & D-Von) and Dawn Marie.
- John “Bradshaw” Layfield defeated The Undertaker in a Last Ride Match to retain the WWE Championship.
2005 – RAW: Homecoming marked the return of the company to the USA Network. Be sure to watch the video below for everyone’s favorite moment: Stone Cold Steve Austin hitting every member (including Linda) with the stunner.
2015 – Chris Jericho was featured in Live from Madison Square Garden to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this debut with ECW and his 25th year of professional wrestling (which means he debuted in ECW 24 years ago this week and has been wrestling professionally 29 years this week)
