Today In History
1989 – The Brain Busters lost the WWF Tag Team Titles to Demolition.
1993 – Tommy Dreamer lost in his ECW debut to Tazz, when Eastern Championship Wrestling presented NWA Bloodfest Part 2.
1999 – Turner Management pulled Lenny Lane, a controversial gay character from programming. At the time he was the Cruiserweight Champion. On TV, they announced that Psicosis had won it from him in a non televised match.
1999 – The UK exclusive Rebellion was presented by the WWF in Birmingham, England. It was the last show that Vince Russo booked for them.
2000 – Champion Vince Russo vacated the title to open Nitro. Booker T became the new champion when he defeated Jeff Jarrett in a “San Francisco 49’ers match”.
2010 – John Cena’s 380 day run as champion ended when he was forced to vacate the title due to a torn pectoral muscle.
2011 – Alberto Del Rio defeated CM Punk and John Cena in the first ever triple threat Hell in a Cell match to win the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell. Additional matches:
- Sheamus defeated Christian.
- Sin Cara Azul defeated Sin Cara Negro.
- Air Boom (Evan Bourne & Kofi Kingston) defeated Jack Swagger & Dolph Ziggler to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship.
- Mark Henry defeated Randy Orton in a Hell in a Cell match to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
- Cody Rhodes defeated John Morrison to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
- Beth Phoenix defeated Kelly Kelly to win the WWE Divas Championship,
2011 – At the same HIAC, Cody Rhodes debuted a new design for the Intercontinental Championship, which included a white strap and plates identical to the title’s classic 1980s design.
2016 – Cody Rhodes, as well as his wife Brandi, debuted at TNA’s Bound for Glory. Rhodes attacked Mike Bennett, who was alongside his wife, Maria. This began a feud between the two couples.
