Bodeen’s Top 5 Moments: WWE NXT (2/17/21)
A few twists, turns and Pat McAfee validation helps to flesh out Bodeen’s Top 5 moments for NXT!
With TakeOver Vengeance Day behind us, NXT delivered a great show, as we saw the winners of the Dusty Rhodes Classic celebrate, as well as the emotional reaction from Kyle O’Reilly after Adam Cole shocked fans and superkicked O’Reilly. So let’s look at the top 5 moments that stood out on the show.
5. Austin Theory returns
Austin Theory joining The Way has been extremely entertaining to watch. Even though Theory is made to look stupid at times, it has never negatively hurt him or made him look weak as he has still looked amazing in the ring, now that he is under the guidance of Johnny Gargano.
Despite being without Austin Theory, The Way would appear on NXT as Indi Hartwell and Candice LeRae faced Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon. Gargano would be a star in commentary as he stated his concern for his lost Way member.
Gargano would eventually find Theory after a van pulled up in the parking lot. While the match was nothing special, this was still a fun little segment to watch.
4. KUSHIDA beats Tyler Rust
In just a few short weeks since making his debut in NXT Tyler Rust has made a name for himself in NXT and is arguably one of the next big names in NXT. Rust had another great performance on NXT as he faced a hurt KUSHIDA with Malcolm Bivens in his corner
This was a great match with KUSHIDA getting the early advantage against Rust, with Rust getting momentum back as he targeted the neck of KUSHIDA which was still hurt from his intense match against Johnny Gargano at Vengeance Day.
Tyler Rust would lose, after KUSHIDA locked the hoverboard on him causing Malcolm Bivens to call for the bell, protecting his investment.
3. Why? Adam why?
After Adam Cole superkicked him at TakeOver: Vengeance Day, Kyle O’Reilly would open the show, giving a heartfelt promo about his reaction to Cole’s actions, stating that Cole was still a brother to O’Reilly even after what Cole did to him at TakeOver. Unfortunately for O’Reilly, Roderick Strong would come out and try to explain Cole’s actions.
Finn Balor would then come out, stating that he was also looking for Adam Cole saying he didn’t trust Kyle O’Reilly, before all 3 men were ambushed by Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch, setting up the main event for later in the night.
This was a great opening promo and did an amazing job in highlighting Kyle’s reaction and response to Cole, as well as setting up the main event for later in the night.
2. Pat McAfee was right all along
Pat McAfee without a doubt was my favorite superstar to make his debut in 2020. In just a few short weeks, McAfee proved his skills on the microphone as he put on amazing promos on NXT, as well on his podcast, The Pat McAfee Show. McAfee would then prove he could back up his ability on the mic, in the ring as he put on a great match with Adam Cole, as well as his amazing performance in the War Games match against the Undisputed Era.
McAfee would give fans another solid heel promo this week, as he called out fans about him being right about Adam Cole. This was a short, but amazing with McAfee playing the role of heel perfectly as he did throughout his time in NXT in 2020.
With Pat McAfee back on NXT television could then be the start of Pat getting involved with the Undisputed Era once again?
1. The end of an Undisputed Era
Despite it being a short and chaotic match, the main event between Roderick Strong, Finn Balor, Kyle O’Reilly, Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch told a great story and was filled with subtle attention to detail which made it amazing to watch.
The main story of this match was Kyle taking out his aggression on his opponents, refusing to tag Roderick Strong in the match. A great bit of subtle storytelling was Dunne targeting the fingers of Balor which were still hurt from their match together.
The match would end after Adam Cole came out and attacked Balor and O’Reilly leaving Dunne to hit the Bitter End of Finn for the win. Adam Cole would later superkick Balor, holding the NXT title to close the show.
These were my top 5 moments from NXT this week. What were your top 5 moments and what did you think of Pat McAfee’s promo? Let us know in the comments below.

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.
While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.
‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?
I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.
Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.
The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.
All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.
As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
