Edge heads to Smackdown to chat with the Tribal Chief, Rey goes old school and Big E retains gold–and Bodeen has the Top 5 Moments from Friday’s edition of WWE Smackdown!

SmackDown continued to show its dominance over Monday Night RAW with yet another solid episode that helped set up things for the SmackDown roster on the road to WrestleMania. On a show that featured Edge returning to his SmackDown roots, it’s time yet again to look at the top 5 moments that stood out on SmackDown this week.

5. Rey Mysterio take a page out of Eddie Guerrero’s playbook

Rey Mysterio is without a doubt, one of the greatest cruiserweights in the history of professional wrestling and has continued to put on great performances as he has gotten older. Despite this, however, Rey’s babyface character can get grow old at times. That’s why it is so great to see Rey occasionally break away from the clean babyface role and break the rules.

Rey would take a page out of the playbook of Eddie Guerrero and hide under the ring during a match between Dominik Mysterio and King Corbin, grabbing Corbin’s foot when Corbin was entering the ring, putting Corbin in position in for a 619 from Dominik

Hopefully, this also helps develop the character of Dominik Mysterio and can help make Dominik feel less basic and generic.

4. Cesaro beats Daniel Bryan

As much as people hate seeing Daniel Bryan, lose at the rate he has been recently, there is no denying it is great to see him putting over new talent and forgotten names. Cesaro is another one of these forgotten and underused names that has been put over by Daniel Bryan recently.

Bryan and Cesaro would put on a great match, despite the short time they had to put on a match. Cesaro looked incredibly tough, making Daniel tap out to a sharpshooter, despite bleeding from the side of his head.

With Cesaro looking this strong and looking to separate from his tag team partner, Shinsuke Nakamura, this could be the start of the push that fans have been waiting for.

3. Roman Reigns opens the show

SmackDown has arguably been a much better viewing experience then Monday Night RAW and a large part of that is the transformation of the Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. Roman has continued to put on great promos and matches every week, with Reigns coming across as more cold every week.

Tonight was another great performance from the Tribal Chief, as Reigns asked Edge to come out, only for Edge to leave Reigns waiting in the ring, irrating the Universal Champion.

This segment did a great job in setting up the confrontation between Edge and Reigns later in the night and felt smooth and quick unlike a lot of opening promos.

2. Edge comes home

During his hall of fame career Edge has been both a RAW superstar and a SmackDown superstar. However SmackDown has always felt like home to Edge with Edge easily being one of the biggest contributors to the rise of SmackDown. From his amazing matches with the likes of Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero, to his battles later in his career with the likes of Chris Jericho, Edge has been a huge part in SmackDown history.

Edge delivered yet another great promo this week, as he talked about the choice of Wrestlemania opponents he has, only for Reigns to interrupt, asking Edge for a answer. Before he could get a answer, Kevin Owens would hit Reigns with a stunner, leaving Reigns with no answer.

This segment did a great job in creating tension between Edge and Reigns, with the only downside being Edge feeling like a afterthought after Owens attacked Reigns.

1. Big E retains the Intercontinental Championship.

Big E’s push as a singles superstars has been great to see. Even during his time winning titles with The New Day, fans always wanted more from the powerhouse of The New Day. Luckily we have gotten to see Big E’s full potiontal as a singles competitor as he retained the Intercontinental Championship  in a great match against Sami Zayn and Apollo Crews.

The match did a great job in showcasing the character of all 3 men involved. With Big E showing his powerhouse ability, while Apollo continued to look more aggressive and Sami continued to be a deluded heel.

With Big E, now looking stronger then ever with the Intercontinental Championship, it will be interesting to see if he will keep the title heading into WrestleMania.

These were my top 5 moments for Smackdown this week. What were some of your favourite moments and who do you think Edge will challenge? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?

Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…

Brock Lesnar WWE WrestleMania 42 Retirement

Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…

At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.

While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.

‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?

I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!

With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!

Penta WWE Intercontinental Championship WrestleMania 42

With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!

This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.

Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.

The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.

All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.

As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
