Who Stood Out on SmackDown?
Before Money in the Bank kicks off; check out what stood out to Austin on SmackDown! How did it set the table for MitB?
Friday Night SmackDown on July 16th took place in front of fans for the first time in 70 weeks. The show was held in Houston, TX, a city that is no stranger to historic WWE moments. The crowd was hot from the jump, and kept the energy high throughout the entire show. The WWE superstars were able to feed off of that energy, not having done so since WrestleMania, and the emotion from the superstars both on the mic and in the ring was clear.
As hard as it is to perform in an empty arena with pumped-in crowd noise, performing live in front of crowds again is no easy task either. There’s been questions of whether superstars would receive the reactions from fans that WWE was hoping for. They can push whoever they want without feedback, but what superstars are really over with the WWE Universe? One man definitely is…
Edge, the Rated R Superstar, the Ultimate Opportunist, the 2021 Royal Rumble winner and WWE Hall of Famer received the crowd pop of the night. Obviously Edge is over and is still a big deal, but surely few realized just how over or how big of a deal. The roof nearly blew off the Toyota Center at the sound of the 47-year-old’s theme music, and the support never wavered throughout the six-man tag match. Every participant in the match, which had Roman Reigns and the Usos taking on Edge with Rey and Dominic Mysterio, was able to put on a great performance and the crowd even seemed to show an outpour of support for Dominic, who wrestled for the first time in front of fans.
Another highlight for the fans in Houston and around the world was the main roster return of Finn Bálor. Bálor, who has been a member of NXT since late 2019, returned to interrupt and attack Sami Zayn. Finn Bálor’s return to the main roster has been highly anticipated ever since he lost the NXT Championship to Karrion Kross. Bálor was the first ever Universal Champion back in 2016, but had to relinquish the belt the next night due to injury. Now that he has been placed on the blue brand with current champion Roman Reigns, fans may be treated to a feud between the two.
Bianca Belair was able to compete in front of fans for the first time as SmackDown Women’s Champion as she retained her title against Carmella. The two put on a fantastic match where Bianca would use her hair as a whip as she did against Sasha Banks to win the title at WrestleMania. She received the support from the crowd that she deserves, and will likely hold the championship for the foreseeable future.
It’s no secret that Kevin Owens is one of the most over, entertaining superstars on the roster, and he proved it once again as he stunned Baron Corbin to the roar of the crowd. He stole the show in the fatal 4-way main event by putting Shinsuke Nakamura through the announce table by way of an elbow drop from the top of a ladder. He’s a fantastic heel but can clearly work as a top babyface. He came up short though as Seth Rollins was able to come away with the victory in the main event.
While the energy was high and the show felt huge, some superstars had a surprisingly disappointing showing and received a lackluster reaction from the audience. In particular, Cesaro has been one of the hottest and fastest rising stars, competing against Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship two months ago at WrestleMania Backlash. His pop from the Houston crowd was small and the short segment with Chad Gable and Otis halted some of the show’s momentum. Going from a hellacious back and forth with the world champion to a beat down from Otis in 60 days can not have been the trajectory the Swiss Superman was hoping for.
This marks the return of the live touring schedule for WWE as shows have already been confirmed around the country through September. While most fans won’t necessarily miss the ThunderDome era, it was an opportunity for certain talent on the roster to turn themselves into stars. With things back to normal, we’ll see if these stars can continue to deliver.

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.
While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.
‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?
I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!
This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.
Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.
The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.
All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.
As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
