CM Punk – The Controversial Champion
April 19 – PC Tunney breaks down CM Punk’s controversial legacy as a Legend of WrestleMania!
The Chicago-made man. AJ’s husband and Larry’s dad. Few people are more polarizing in the history of pro wrestling than one CM Punk. From pipebombs to ice cream bars, Punk could always capitalize on controversy. Possibly the best Paul Heyman guy (in my opinion), at most times in his career, he was simply the Best In The World! The longevity and success of Punk’s career can only be matched by a handful of stars over the years. Let’s see how the Straight Edge Superstar fared on The Grandest Stage Of Them All.
WrestleMania XXIII – CM Punk competes in the 8-Man Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Punk made his WrestleMania debut in this star-packed ladder match alongside the likes of Edge, Randy Orton, and Jeff Hardy. As the straight edge underdog, he showcased his high-flying agility and resilience in a chaotic scramble that put him on the map as a future star.
WrestleMania XXIV – CM Punk wins the 7-Man Money in the Bank Ladder Match
One year later, Punk climbed the ladder of opportunity – literally – defeating Chris Jericho, Mr. Kennedy, and others to capture the briefcase. This victory set the stage for his game-changing cash-in later that year and cemented him as a serious player who could deliver when the lights were brightest.
WrestleMania XXV – CM Punk wins the 8-Man Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Back-to-back briefcase wins? Only Punk. In another highspot-filled ladder war with Shelton Benjamin, Kane, and MVP, he proved his MITB mastery. It wasn’t just about winning – it was about proving the “Best In The World” wasn’t just talk.
WrestleMania XXVI – Rey Mysterio defeats CM Punk w/Luke Gallows & Joey Mercury
Now leading the Straight Edge Society as a heel, Punk targeted Mysterio in a personal crusade against “impure” lifestyles. The match was short but highlighted Punk’s cunning and the Society’s interference, keeping his controversial heat alive.
WrestleMania XXVII – Randy Orton defeats CM Punk
Punk’s heel run continued in this solid midcard clash. Orton’s aggression met Punk’s technical precision in a bout that kept Punk relevant during a transitional phase, building toward bigger things.
WrestleMania XXVIII – CM Punk (c) defeats Chris Jericho by submission for the WWE Championship
As the arrogant, long-reigning champion, Punk battled a returning rock-star Jericho in a personal, athletic masterpiece. The mind games and barbs led to a submission victory that many still call one of Punk’s finest title defenses.
WrestleMania XXIX – The Undertaker defeats CM Punk w/Paul Heyman
This was personal. After losing the title, Punk set his sights on ending The Streak. With Heyman by his side, he desecrated Paul Bearer’s memory – stealing the urn, mocking it, and turning the feud dark and emotional. Punk brought everything, but The Streak lived on at 21-0 in one of WrestleMania’s most intense matches.
WrestleMania XLI – Seth Rollins defeats CM Punk & Roman Reigns in a Triple Threat Match (Night 1 Main Event)
After 10 years away, Punk returned to the biggest stage in a star-studded main event. Heyman’s betrayals and the cross-brand chaos made it electric, though Punk came up short in his first Mania back.
WrestleMania XLII – CM Punk (c) vs. Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship (Night 2 Main Event)
With the build to this year’s main event, CM Punk solidified his spot on pro wrestling’s Mt. Rushmore of talent on the mic. Another pipebomb and countless personal jabs at Roman have made this Mania matchup one of the most personal in history. I have no doubt these two will deliver in the ring by continuing to tell a great story.
“I hate the idea that you’re the best. Because you’re not. I’m the best. I’m the best in the world!”
