Daniel Bryan Danielson – The Real People’s Champion in WWE
Greg DeMarco breaks down Daniel Bryan Danielson’s unconventional legacy as a Legend of WWE WrestleMania
April 22 – Greg DeMarco breaks down Daniel Bryan Danielson’s unconventional legacy as a Legend of WWE WrestleMania
There are a lot of ways to define a “People’s Champion.” Sometimes it’s about catchphrases. Sometimes it’s about box office. And sometimes it’s much simpler than that. It comes down to whether the audience ever stops believing in you.
For Daniel Bryan Danielson (because that is what I will always call him), belief was never the issue. The question was whether WWE would ever catch up to it.
I was sitting in the crowd at WrestleMania 26 when, during the pre-show, the cast of the original NXT–the reality show version–waved to the crowd from the stage. Among them was Daniel Bryan, known to the hardcore fans as Bryan Danielson. I’d previously seen him in ROH, where I incorrectly “didn’t see it,” until I did…and then I never stopped.
That contrast tells the whole story. From independent standout to overlooked rookie to reluctant centerpiece, Daniel Bryan’s WrestleMania journey never followed the usual path of a WWE legend. It moved alongside it, and at times, in spite of it.
When you look at the matches, the moments, and the reactions, a different kind of legacy starts to take shape.
Daniel Bryan’s WrestleMania Record
Before getting to WrestleMania 30, it’s worth laying out the full picture:
- WrestleMania 26 – Appeared as part of the original NXT Rookie class
- WrestleMania 27 – Dark match: Daniel Bryan defeated Sheamus (United States Championship)
- WrestleMania 28 – Lost to Sheamus (World Heavyweight Championship) in 18 seconds
- WrestleMania 30 – Defeated Triple H; later defeated Batista and Randy Orton (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)
- WrestleMania 31 – Won the Intercontinental Championship (Ladder Match)
- WrestleMania 34 – Returned from retirement; teamed with Shane McMahon to defeat Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
- WrestleMania 35 – Lost WWE Championship to Kofi Kingston
- WrestleMania 36 – Lost Intercontinental Championship Match challenging Sami Zayn
- WrestleMania 37 – Lost Universal Championship Match (Triple Threat challenging champion Roman Reigns and Edge)
On paper, it’s not the résumé you would expect from someone with Bryan’s reputation. There are losses. There are short matches. There are moments where he wasn’t positioned as the focal point.
But then there was WrestleMania 30.
WrestleMania 30: the crowning achievement
WrestleMania 30 often gets framed as a fairy tale. Daniel Bryan overcoming the odds. Winning twice in one night. Standing tall with the titles as the crowd celebrates. All of that is true.
But the reality is more interesting. WrestleMania 30 wasn’t about creating a moment. It was about crowning a career.
By the time Bryan stepped into the ring with Triple H, the audience had already made its decision. Despite what you think you’ve bene told, The Yes Movement was indeed a storyline. It started the August prior. But even then, it was a reaction. Fans were not waiting to see if Bryan would become the guy. They had already decided he was.
That’s what made the night work. The match with Triple H validated everything the audience had been saying. The main event against Batista and Randy Orton felt like the company finally catching up.
The Unconventional Legend
Most WrestleMania legends follow a pattern.
They rise quickly. They stay on top. They accumulate main events, title defenses, and signature wins. Their legacy is easy to track because it follows the system.
Daniel Bryan never followed that system.
His most famous WrestleMania moment came after he had already been overlooked. His shortest match became one of the most talked-about moments of his career. His connection with the audience often mattered more than his position on the card.
That’s what makes him different.
Why He’s the Real People’s Champion
Being the People’s Champion is not about branding. It’s about alignment.
It’s about the audience seeing something in you before the company does and refusing to let it go. It’s about forcing the conversation, shifting direction, and redefining what success looks like.
Daniel Bryan didn’t just win at WrestleMania.
He defined what a WrestleMania moment could be, a formula later followed by the ascension of Kofi Kingston.
Daniel Bryan’s WrestleMania legacy doesn’t fit neatly into the usual categories. It is not defined by dominance. It is not built on a perfect record. And it does not rely on a single moment, even if WrestleMania 30 stands above the rest. It is defined by something harder to measure.
- A consistent connection with the audience.
- Resilience in the face of booking decisions.
- And support that never really went away.
That’s why the label fits: not because WWE said it, but because the audience never stopped believing it.
Daniel Bryan Danielson is the real People’s WWE Champion.
