It was a pretty scary scene for New Japan Pro Wrestling fans last Saturday night as the company held its G1 Special in San Francisco event, live from the famed Cow Palace. One of the most talked about matches of the night was a high-flying affair that saw Hiromu Takahashi defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship against Dragon Lee.

One spot in the match left fans holding their breath, as Dragon Lee set the 2018 Best Of The Super Juniors winner up for a phoenix-plex. Unfortunately, something went awry and Takahashi was spiked on the top of his head in a gruesome scene. Hiromu was able to finish the match, putting Dragon Lee away after a Canadian Destroyer and his signature Time Bomb to retain his championship, but as we now know, he didn’t come away from it unscathed.

It was later revealed that Takahashi collapsed when he got backstage and was rushed to a local hospital with what was believed to be a broken neck (check that out here), but that has yet to be confirmed. Today, New Japan Pro Wrestling provided an update on Hiromu:

On July 7, during the G1 Special in San Francisco event, Hiromu Takahashi sustained a neck injury and was taken to a San Francisco hospital for evaluation.

Takahashi was able to return to Japan today, and will proceed with treatment. We apologize for the delay in publishing this update, which was in order to ensure smooth and efficient transit for Takahashi at the airport. We deeply appreciate our fans’ concerns.
