Fyter Fest, Southern Showdown and two big title matches during the AJPW Dynamite series give us an interesting week. What made the Top 5?

Well last week Stomping Grounds managed to take the top two spots in a week with a lot of basic television. So WWE was given a bit of a layup. Now let’s see if they came through.

The match that won last week was, WWE Stomping Ground: Cruiserweight Championship: Tony Nese (c) vs Drew Gulak vs Akira Tozawa.

Let’s see what made the Top 5 this week!

5. AEW Fyter Fest: Young Bucks & Kenny Omega vs Lucha Brothers & Laredo Kid

Snippet from Mitchell’s Coverage:
The Elite have each luchador in position, TRIPLE POWERBOMBS! Cover, TWO from all three! Fans know “This is Awesome!” but far from over. The Elite set Laredo up but Fenix runs in. Fenix just ends up the same alongside Laredo, and Nick climbs up. Double draping 450! Cover, but Pentagon kicks Omega’s head! Nick throws Pentagon out, then spikes Fenix! But Pentagon avoids the moonsault to slingblade! Matt runs to wreck Pentagon with a dropkick! Laredo dropkicks Matt as he skins the cat! Laredo runs but into another V-Trigger! Omega runs but into FENIX INJECTION! But Fenix gets Nick’s neckbreaker! Fans hope these six “Fight Forever!” but it has to end somehow.

Matt scoops Pentagon and Nick takes aim, but turns into Laredo’s chop. Nick CHOPS back, then use Laredo to go up, but Fenix and Laredo trip him up! Fenix walks the rope SUPER SPANISH FLY onto their brothers!! Laredo has Omega with forearms, then runs, springboard, V-TRIGGER! Tiger Driver 98! Cover, TWO!? Omega keeps his focus as he reloads. Bang, and he runs, to V-Trigger again! Omega electric chairs, ONE WINGED ANGEL! Cover, The Elite win!

Winner:  Omega via One Winged Angel

Rating: ****

4. 205 Live: #1 Contender Match: Tony Nese vs Akira Tozawa

Snippet from Mitchell’s Coverage:
But Tozawa keeps moving, back to a drop zone and top rope. Tozawa leaps, SUPER SENTON FLOPS! Both men are down but Portland says “This is Awesome!” Nese and Tozawa stir, and Nese is up first. Tozawa hears the “AH! AH!” echoing in the distance, but Nese lifts him in the Alabama position. Tozawa sunset filps and lets Nese go, to get a Crucifix Driver! Cover, TWO! Nese rolls Tozawa, TWO to a deadlift! Buckle bomb! Cover, ROPEBREAK! Tozawa survives and Nese is shocked! Nese grits his teeth as Tozawa sits up in the corner. Nese runs side to side, but into a German Suplex! Bridging cover, TWO!

Tozawa refuses to stop, but he runs into a SUPERKICK! German Suplex into buckles! Nese brings the knee pad down, goes side to side, but still misses. Tozawa kicks, swings, slides under, and slips around the clothesline to sunset flip, but Nese counters with the Dude Buster!! Cover, Nese wins!!

Winner: Nese via Reverse Package Piledriver

Rating: ****

3. AJPW Dynamite Series Day 7: Triple Crown Championship: Yoshi-Tatsu vs Kento Miyahara (c)

Yoshi-Tatsu earned a shot after a successful Gaora TV title challenge and just progressing up the ladder well. Kento is the best of the best, and carrying All Japan through this darker period. Can Yoshi-Tatsu fulfill his personal challenge or returning to prominence?

Kento and Yoshi are familiar since they tagged together and this is Yoshi’s second challenge since being featured more often in All Japan. Kento takes him a little lightly early, throwing him around the outside, headbutting him into oblivion and just seemingly enjoying his time.

Yoshi manages some quick offense to slow down Kento and finally string some offense together. Surprisingly catching Kento in a couple Koji Clutch attempts and even landing the Codebreaker from Jericho, but Kento kicked out. All in all, this match became a great showing that Yoshi-Tatsu is a solid threat. He’s no longer the Bullet Club Hunter/Styles Clash Broken Neck/J-Pop Drop joke that he has been the last few years.

Definitely a fun match to watch where Yoshi is nowadays.

Winner: Kento wins via Shutdown Suplex Hold

Rating: ****

2. NJPW Southern Showdown: IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship: Will Ospreay (c) vs Robbie Eagles

Since they went down to Australia, Ospreay hand picked the Australian Sniper Robbie Eagles to be his first challenger.Robbie has been on the rocks with El Phantasmo, so it seems like he’s questioning his Bullet Club alliance.

This was a great high flying junior match, with a few wrinkles. Eagles goes after body parts since he’s the Sniper of the Sky, so that made for some innovative attempts from Ospreay. Then we also had Eagles trying to keep ELP out of the match, but ELP kept inserting himself in situations.

There was one great spot where Ospreay was distracted on the ropes by ELP, but Eagles dove and wiped out ELP, but it also caused Ospreay to fall and get tangled in the ropes. A great 450 Splash on the prone Ospreay gave Eagles a moment of hope. Ospreay hits two Oscutters quickly, and it causes ELP to pull Red Shoes out of the ring.

Eagles stops ELP from hitting Ospreay with the belt and has a moment to make a decision. Red Shoes and Ospreay look at him like “don’t use the belt”, and Eagles hands the belt to Red Shoes.

So we get a great match, great transitions with Eagles babyfacing himself and setting up for an assumed separation from the Bullet Club.

Winner: Ospreay via Strombreaker

Rating: **** 1/2

1. AJPW Dynamite Series Day 7: World Tag Team Championships: Violence Giant (Suwama & Shuji Ishikawa) (c) vs The End (Odinson & Parrow)

Making their debut in the previous tag league, The End left a huge impact on the AJPW crowd. Violence Giant has been a consistent force for the All Japan tag division. Back to back Tokyo Sports Tag Team of the year with four tag team title runs in the last two years, make for the a hell of a challenge for Odinson and Parrow.

I can surmise this match with: If you like big strong guys beating the ever living hell out of each other, watch this. But that’s selling it a little short.

Everyone in this match had great moments to shine, Suwama did his desperation Double Chops, The End hit a Super Collider and nearly executed the Doomsday Device. It trimmed down to Odinson and Suwama in the ring trading big moves. Shuji kept Parrow occupied on the outside while Suwama pulled out the Giant Slam to retain the titles.

The crowd was very much into this match. Numerous chants for The End and Violence Giant filled the arena and it looked like The End said it wasn’t over just yet and wanted one more shot. This should be interesting to see if the rematch happens quickly since Violence Giant have a tendency to work the same team for a few months this year.

Winner: Shuji via Giant Slam

Rating: **** 1/2

Thoughts:

All of the matches this week, were definitely highlight reel material. My vote will go to, Will Ospreay vs Robbie Eagles, purely because not only was it a great match but the moving story pieces are interesting. I guess this also puts another feather in Ospreay’s cap since he’s in another quality match and there’s no Seth Rollins to be seen.

Hmmm…

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?

Brock Lesnar WWE WrestleMania 42 Retirement

Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…

At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.

While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.

‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?

I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!

Chris King: Defend The Intercontinental Championship At Backlash!

With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!

Penta WWE Intercontinental Championship WrestleMania 42

With WWE Backlash upon us, Chris King wants to see Penta defend the Intercontinental Championship in Tampa!

This year’s annual Backlash showcase is only a few days away, and while there are many big matches announced, one that definitely should be isn’t on the card. In my opinion, outside of Roman Reigns/Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins/Bron Breakker, the Intercontinental Championship scene has been stellar over the last month.

Penta has been an excellent champion, especially after his triumphant title defense in a ladder match against JeVon Evans, Rusev, Dragon Lee, and the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. Their ladder match at Mania was one of the best that WWE has produced in a while.

The momentum never stopped, as on the post-Mania episode of Monday Night Raw, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page made his debut and was quickly inserted into the Intercontinental title scene. Page had a fantastic showing against his longtime NXT rival Evans and picked up a big win in his debut match thanks to an assist from Rusev.

All Ego immediately joined forces with ‘The Bulgarian Brute’ Rusev, who was also vying for the Intercontinental Title in his own right. On this week’s episode of Raw, Page and Rusev defeated Evans and Penta. All Ego pinned the champion, making a huge statement and putting him one step closer to getting a title shot. For the past few weeks I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if WWE was going to add this incredible fatal four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship, but it hasn’t happened yet.

As much as the WWE Universe enjoys witnessing great matches on free television, I truly believe all four superstars deserve the chance to showcase their talents on the PLE. While Penta has done a terrific job as the intercontinental champion, it’s time for a fresh face to hold the prestigious title. Page would make a great braggadocious heel that would help elevate the Intercontinental Championship to new heights!
