Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio that former UFC champion Cain Velasquez likely would be wrestling for AAA if WWE had not acquired the promotion, but a sour exit from WWE and differing objectives under WWE ownership have kept him off AAA shows. Velasquez was in attendance at the Intuit Dome for Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano, but Meltzer noted WWE’s goals for AAA don’t align with signing a Mexican celebrity-type talent following his departure on less-than-amicable terms.

Meltzer added that key AAA figures — including Dorian Roldan and Konnan — are enthusiastic about Velasquez and would have brought him in for big events if Dorian remained in charge. Under WWE’s direction, however, those plans appear unlikely to move forward despite AAA insiders’ support.
